Walked the Orange Tees this morning 2/20/2018 at 8:40am with RGM2525, his dad Gordon and also joined by a nice single Dan from Colorado–what a enjoyable day! We had colder but beautiful weather in the high 40’s when we teed off warming up some on the back nine with maybe a club of wind on the back nine–very nice playing conditions . POP was 4 hours never really waiting that long and not really being pushed by the 3some of walkers behind us. Paid $28.00 to walk which is their standard morning rate.

The greens were rolling fairly smooth and nice with medium pace. Maybe a 9 to 9.5 on the stimp with just a few ballmarks present. I thought they were in good shape and were holding irons with spin and higher trajectory. The pin locations here on these big Gil Hanse greens make putting and chipping fun and challenging. Rated 7.5/10

The fairways for hardly any rain in the area were semi-lush providing decent lies and decent run out. Rated 7/10

The tees were mostly lush and some needed leveling. In better than average shape. Rated 7/10

The rough is dry, thin in most places with some bare spots and hardpan here and there. Rated 6/10.

Was in fairway bunker on #9 that contained just the right amount of sand for bunker shots.

FYI –this might be a permanent thing so check with the pro-shop they are now starting players on #17, then playing #18 then on to #10-16 and then #1-9 to finish up. So my tips on this site will have to be updated–Johnny might want to update the scorecard too after speaking with the pro-shop to see if this is going to be a permanent change as they had scorecards made for players with this new routing system.

Played Starfire on the 18th of February at 3:10pm at $29 twilight rate. Showed up early in hopes of being allowed to go out as a single because I was paired with an unknown grouping of three people and luckily enough they let me start with a well known local at 2:50 instead. Awesome. The pro shop is near the bag drop just past the dining area so easy to find and all staffers were present and helpful.

The course itself looked in presentable shape for a few weeks away from Spring. The tee boxes were easy to find and always seemed ready to accept a tee. The fairways were near perfect, knowing some landing areas that were close to the green being divot filled I would attempt to lay-up or go for the green, THEY WERE BAD in some areas. The bunkers were overwatered in some areas because of recent rain but none of them were crusty. The rough was 1-3 inches high so rather consistent and green around fairways. Greens were rolling great even though there seemed to be pitchmarks every one step, definitely something I’d keep an eye on. All in all the shape wasn’t anything noticeable and didn’t keep me from playing good golf.

This Arnold Palmer designed course has 3 nines, King/Hawk/Squire. We were scheduled to play King to the Hawk for completion of 18. King was a great combination of gettable par 5s and risky par 3s with no par 4 bearing incredible difficulty or requirements on the long irons. A rather tame and attackable 9 holes designed by a go-getter golfer.

Sun City West Golf Arizona On our way to the back 9, there were 3 FOURSOMES waiting on the first hole. NOPE. I wish I could say we stuck it tough and played through but we couldn’t. I wish I could write a review for the rest of the course but I can’t. Ranger needs to facilitate better timing between groups or this course needs to be avoided until the summer, which is when the local said it could be enjoyed to its full potential. Wouldn’t return to play until then.

Played February 19 (2/19) using Underpar $49 Two-some on a blustery cool am cruising around for a Pace of Play (POP) of 3:40 even with a pretty steady stream of golfers leaving the 1st tee.

Starting with the Worst

Golf Playing Conditions 5.71 GOOD
Golf Playing Conditions 5.71 GOOD

Bunkers have a real abundance of rocks and pebbles.  They look groomed but are generally thin.  Good for shots from the fairway type but not so much for green-side.

Fairways are dormant and most have OK cover which is better toward the center and sketchy on the perimeters.  There are some bare areas on 3-4 of the holes for the most part had OK lies except maybe 5-6 times from the fairway.

There is no rough fairways are flanked by bare/sandy soil which at times can amplify marginal shots as they roll into more trouble like the many burms that populate the course.
Played the whites (6281 on the card and a little shorter in reality) tees level with OK cover.

Now for the Best

Greens firm generally smooth medium fast rolling well but harder to read than I remembered not being here for about 4 months. Greens are the best feature most are large with opportunity for variable pin placements and with the slope and subtle contours.  Today add the wind we faced some extra challenges and were totally out of our depth on those down wind putts toward front pin placements.  That ball just ran forever!

Friendly staff easy check in.  Very casual; go to 1st tee with no starter,  Everyone just kind of fell into line to get going. Beverage cart came around 3-4 times during the round.

The course does reflect that effort has been extended to make improvements and according to staff more is on the way. The layout is good and entertaining.  There are still has some rough spots but is worth the occasional play.

Played today in a nice Pace of Play (POP) of 3.5 hours. Had not played here in a long time, so took advantage of their “snowbird” special ($34).

While the fairways are fescue, they are not 100% dormant and have some green to them. They also provided good lies and great roll all round (very well conditioned). Tee boxes provided no issues. Traps were all clean and with great sand. Found very little rough, but there are numerous Out of Bounds (OB) areas and water, that do come into play. Greens were just great and they are large with many undulations (#4 a par 3 has 4 unique steps from the front to the back of the green and it’s long and narrow). The greens chipped/putted just great (and fast 9-10 on the stimp) and you did not want to be above the hole. I will go back, just to play the par 3’s (# 8 signature hole is an island green and it’s great) which are 4 of the best par 3’s you will find on any course in Southern California, in my humble opnion. And the rest of the holes are great as well.

Customer service was excellent at all levels. Great course, with great maintenance crew. I would recommend this course to anyone planning to play in Temecula. Personally, I enjoyed Redhawk more than I did CrossCreek or Pechanga. I am surprised there are not more recent reviews?

Played 2-11-18 with David, Matt, and Jim using an UnderPar deal and getting around the course in a little under 5 hours. Tee boxes were mostly level with descent coverage with some minor divot damage on par threes. Fairways had not fully filled in from whenever they had last been punched so you could end up with the ball sitting in a little depression, but they were mostly in good shape with a fair amount of roll out. Rough was cut very low and had some bare spots. Was in one green-side bunker that was nice to play from. Greens for the most part were in good shape, rolling fairly smooth with medium pace and semi-soft.

We played here on Monday 2/10/18 at 8am finishing in just over 4 hours. I notice that this course hadn’t been rated in a while so thought it was time to go back. My group always enjoys our rounds here. We love the layout, conditions, customer service, views, and location of Angeles National. Recent reviews were not too favorable but we thought the course was in great shape overall. The greens, bunkers, and tee boxes were all excellent! If you are not a fan of tight lies then you won’t like the fairways and rough. They are very tight and do run out however we found them soft enough underneath to take a divot and hit off of. Chipping around the greens is a real challenge with these lies especially if you miss it above the hole.

A couple things to point out to everyone about ANGC for GK’ers…….the recent fires got really close to the course and now more then ever you can tell you are in a desert. The nearby mountains look nice but the areas surrounding the course are rather bare now. The rates here are a little steep at $65 for a senior but if you book online they are charging $55 with a booking fee so about $57 pp which is much better. If you call them and make a tee time they charge you the higher rate ($65) so beware.

We will always return here.

Played here on 2/14 just before 2pm and we were gone by 5 (with Gus)
It was the second round of the day having played earlier with Jonny, Ron and Gus at Omni that morning.

I had never played here before, was not sure what to expect. Only $29, it was a quick round. Had allot of fun here, worth the green fee and then some. Great service at the pro shop, and cart return.

Greens were in great shape, hard to read at times, but it made it a good challenge.
Fairways were good, no bare spots, some thin areas but no problem at all.
Tee Boxes are good, some were a little beat up but nothing to complain about.
POP was great till the last 3 holes were some folks killed the pace with the 8 players, 1 doubling as a photographer.

Looking forward to playing here again later in the year, good views and a mix of narrow and wide fairways. Very solid place to play.

I’ve played Avila a half dozen times or so and conditions seem to come and go like the tide. Greens were in decent shape. Firm and fast. They had a few pitch marks here and there that caused some bumps and lumps, but weren’t too bad overall.

Fairways were ok. Tee boxes were absolutely atrocious.

As for the layout, it’s a blast. Avila is a shot makers course with a few wide open holes to blast away in between. The track has hills to negotiate like the par 5 #3 you have to go up and over to get to the small green, a few lakes/ponds surrounding par 3 greens and three forced carries over the ocean inlet.

Hole #11 also has a small cutout in the middle if a hill that you have to negotiate. Other tee shots require place kicker accuracy to split the uprights between trees planted on both sides of the tee boxes. Fun times!!

You will use every club in your bag and every shot in your arsenal. Fun factor meter on this course is pegged, with conditions …. Good enough to let you post a good score but bad enough to give you an excuse if you don’t.
