ALERT: Aeration
Could be doing minor aeration during Fall 2019. Calls to the LA City golf courses and checking the LA City Golf Course website have provided very little or no information about when minor aeration will or will not occur. However there have been posts from golfers that this is occurring so hence this alert.
* Although Greenskeeper.org researches all alerts before posting, we ask that you please contact the golf course for confirmation.

Played the newly revamped Roosevelt on Sunday with bnaso and his son with a 9:44am tee time and walking it. Was very excited to see some of the changes that have happened here since they put some money into fixing up the place and updating the irrigation system.

The Review

Overall, the course still plays mostly the same way. They added in a few bunkers here, moved some there, and removed some others elsewhere. The most prominent changes? Big bunker in the middle of the fairway on the 4th hole and trees removed for the draw. There are no longer fences backstopping the greens on the 4th and 9th holes. The bunker guarding the 7th hole green is now just mounds. The bunker on the fifth hole in the middle of the fairway appears to have been moved more to the left from the tee box.

What else has improved? Drinking fountains! They’re great and a nice addition. They’ve also updated the parking lot with more spaces (great idea!) and the restaurant/snack shop is modernized and apparently more dog and kid friendly. I never thought the old one needed replacing though.

Conditions were somewhat better than I remember most of the time at Roosevelt, but conditions never bothered me much here because it’s such a unique nine-hole experience. The terrain and holes are varied, there are elevations and narrow chutes, some wide open fairways and of course the scenery, topography and wildlife is second to none in the region.

Fairways were in pretty good shape this time around with a lot fewer thin or burned out areas than my last visits a few years ago. Tee boxes remain a difficulty here though as they’re mostly beat up and bare. Bunkers had some decent sand in them to get the job done. The greens were pretty good in terms of roll and holding shots, but there were some areas of damage and a lot of ball marks from lazy golfers.

Parting Thoughts

I always enjoy coming to this course when time is of the essence and want a quality experience and don’t have to break the bank to do it. Always recommend this place, especially if you’ve never played it before. It’s very cool.

Had a chance to play this incredible course while on a business trip to Dallas.

First off, I paid $39 to play here. It should be more in the $100+ range easily! I couldn’t believe the price when my buddy who lives out there told me.

The course takes all of the most famous holes in Europe and recreated them at this course. Each hole has a stone with the information on the history of the hole. Pretty neat. The course is on Lake Lewisville, so many of the holes have beautiful views of the water.

The course was in just about perfection condition. Tee boxes in great condition, the ball sits perfectly on the fairway. The greens were fast, I had the worst time with them.

If you’re coming to Dallas, you should definitely check on The Tribute.

Played here 10/22 before 8 am as a walking single. caught up to a group on 8 & went through. thus finishing around 10:45. For $32, there may not be a better deal in golf. Played the back tees & although the card says par 72, I’d say its more like a par 70, even arguably a 69.

4/5/18 are par 5s a single digit should hit in 2 in today’s game. regardless, it’s a great experience and much fun, call all 3 those holes par 4.5’s if you will.

Additionally the 6th hole is a great 230+ par 3 and they even have a grown over tee box that would make the hole 285-300, and in that case it’d be a great short par 4. Although 9 isn’t too long, that’s 1 thing this course lacks in comparison to rustic canyon is a good short par 4.

Yes 9 says 333 from back, but playing uphill, it plays longer to an awesome green. Overall, you have well designed memorable holes here. 10’s a strong downhill par 3, 14-16 is a very challenging stretch and in totality you can see the great work Gil Hanse did here on Billy Bell course bones. I see why it’s called the “sister” course to rustic canyon.

Although I was staying over at OVI, I came here to play instead. Can’t say enough good things about my Soule Park experience.

Played Saturday morning, 10/26, grouped with two other singles, and teeing off a little before 9:30 at $64 to walk. I hadn’t been out here in a few years and was looking forward to revisiting. On a calm, sunny day, overall conditions were pretty good.

Tees were generally flat and green and no particular issues come to mind. Fairways had good coverage overall that was on the tight side, so good surface with a good amount of roll. There were occasional, scattered, tight, browned-out patches, but I would not characterize them as hard-pan and I think in most cases they provided a decent — if perhaps discolored — hitting surface. Again, I don’t recall any problems playing in the fairways.

The rough mostly had green coverage and usually it was not especially punitive off the fairway unless you got blocked. Bunkers had a thinner, soft, top layer of sand on a firmer base that resisted footprints. I found them generally clean and playable — interestingly, just like Hansen Dam the previous week.

The maintenance alert should be removed. The greens were clean and pretty quick. No sign of aeration. I left a lot of first putts too far past the hole, underestimating the speed more often than not, and many of the greens had undulations to make it more interesting. The exception is the 9th green complex which is getting a complete rebuild, so there was a temporary green short of it.

While not an a particularly long course, I think the yardage on this course is misleading and it plays longer and a bit more challenging than the numbers would suggest. Partially because two very short par 3’s are offset by a number of good length par 4’s, and partially because some of the medium and shorter par 4’s are made more interesting and challenging due to hills and altitude changes. A bit pricey as a muni, but about 1/3 the cost of Sandpiper. And while it doesn’t have the ocean views, it is in SB and the view of the mountains coming up the 18th makes it a pretty nice finish. I scored like crap, but had a good time and recommend it.

5.63Rode the Coyote tees (6510/72.1/134) in 4H, 20M early morning using Forelinx. Played as a single sandwiched between multiple 4somes on each side. Provided the opportunity to hit lots of practice shots with new irons. The weather was nice, 70’s, clear and fairly calm.

Tight, tough layout up/down rolling hills with numerous forced carries. Like the layout overall. Would be a beast to walk with the hills and the distance between many holes. Because of the tightness and many holes playing downhill, I hit long irons on about half the par 4’s with good results.

Tees were the weakest area. Numerous looked like they were recently reseeded and were furry.

Fairways played nice, good coverage but not lush. 90% were firm with plenty of roll, 10% were squishy from an abundance of morning watering.

Rough more hit and miss. Good coverage, could be 1″ or 3+” within a relatively small area.

Traps well maintained with good quality sand. Firm, which was nice on full fairway shots, not as much green-side.

Greens rolled great. Softest greens I have played in awhile, huge ball marks and irons backing up was a consistent theme. Medium fast bordering on fast and smooth. The greens here are challenging, large and if you are on the wrong side, plenty of potentially nasty putts. One green (15?) was in poor condition with numerous areas they were trying to patch, but the other 17 were very good.

Busy driving range, friendly and courteous check-in/starter staff. Drink cart out and around several times and plenty of water stations on the course. Solid layout. Would not pay rack rate, but recommended if you get a deal.

Golf Playing Conditions 6.40 GOOD

Yesterday, I played Camarillo Springs with my buddies. Our tee time was 10:05AM and finished at 2:15PM. The golf course was not to busy and we didn’t wait for anybody.

The fairways are OK, they need a little TLC some fairways were dry and it was hard to compressed the ball. It felt like hitting from a fairway bunker. The tees need a lot help there where a few of them that weren’t level and my feet felt out balance. There were some tees that I had to position my ball a few drivers back from the tee makers in Order to get a good level area. The greens were to bumping and sandy. Bunkers are OK and they were OK to hit from. Other that we had a great round and it was fun getting out and play the game that we love. As always costumer service was friendly and welcoming. Until then get out up there and continue to kill your drive and get lots of birdies.

I checked the weather when I woke at 4am and the forecast was 20-30 mph winds with gusts to 40+. I was going to bail, but decided to drive out and play anyway. To my surprise, the winds weren’t that bad, maybe 15 mph.

Michael in the pro shop was fantastic. He welcomed us and made us feel he really appreciated our patronage. He talked about the recent improvements and the plan they have to further improve the course and make it a positive customer experience. You could tell this guy actually cares !

While there are still many issues with conditioning, I could see a big improvement from the last time I played here. Lots of new sod has been placed on several fairways. Still many areas which need attention, but the effort is apparent. Rough: what rough ! Once off the fairway, it is just hard pan/dirt. Many of the bunkers are just terrible, some reflect they are trying! The greens were the most frustrating. They really need to be rolled, as the ball kind of “wiggles” its way towards the hole, does not keep its line at all. Speed was inconsistent.

I have never been a huge fan of links courses, but I enjoy the change. I can see the potential. I just hope they follow through and continue to improve the course, because it is so different from what I normally play, and could be a fun track once they achieve their goal. I applaud their efforts and enthusiasm. Thank you Michael for being just a great host !

Golf Playing Conditions 6.56 GOOD
Golf Playing Conditions 6.56 GOOD

Had the entire day to play today so decided to cruise up to RSM for 36 holes today with my buddy RGM2525. Based on the wind conditions in Moorpark and surrounding valley areas RSM was a good call in that regard. I played earlier here in the Spring and always enjoy the peace and quiet vibe and layout at RSM.

We teed off at 8:25am for our first round riding the black tees. Our POP passing one group was 3 hours for our first nine. Our second 18 holes we also came in around 3 hours passing 2 more groups.

RSM has a huge range with Titleist range balls and a very nice chipping/sand practice area and huge putting green that like the greens on the course were in great shape.

The greens here are in beautiful shape rolling pure with little to no ball-marks. Quick putting wise yet holding irons with spin like darts. Many big undulating greens here that were a pleasure to putt on and play. Rated 8/10.

Fairways were firmer this time of year vs in the spring. Would say 25% lush, 75% brown and firm. Tons of roll if you have a low trajectory ball with your driver. Rated 6.5/10. Thought the fairways were tight but still playable.

Was only in two green-side bunkers for 36 holes on Number #2 and number #18 which contained just enough sand. My playing partner found his fair share which were firmer and maybe needed some more sand.

Tees are un-level like last reviewer stated. You could always usually find a level stance after hunting but most boxes need to be leveled some. Thought the tee boxes though were lush and looked good as far as lushness was concerned. Tee rating 6.5/10

The poorest part of the course was some of the chipping areas around the green. Many were hard-pan, muddy, thin or sometimes bare depending on where you landed. Rated 5/10.

Staff was great, great challenging layout from the back tees and the greens were great.

I also must add that I can see many players falling into the category of not wanting to play the black tees at almost 7000 yds and not wanting to play the whites at 6278 yds. A blue tee box(6500-6800) option is very needed out here.

Would highly recommend this layout and conditioning of the greens which are great. Had a great time. Thanks RSM!
