I also played in the GK Guru event with JohnnyGK, SR129 and Leef2020 and had a great time. Turned out to be rather warm and beautiful day so all conditions were perfect. Also had a nice conversation after our round with Leef2020 as he taught me a lot on club making. Learned a lot.

Got there a bit late and wanted to get to the range and Landon, our host gave me keys to the cart, directions to the range and a complimentary small bucket. Very nice of him to do so. Beautiful setting and really nice club house and restaurant.

I found this course pretty challenging. A good mixture of long and short par 4’s. I found the par 3’s really challenging. Elevation changes and/or hitting over water made you really concentrate on trying to hit a good shot. The pin placement on #7 was incredibly difficult adding to fact that there is a bunker smack in the middle of the green. Fairways were nice. Some tight/thin lies but overall good. Bunkers were real soft and fluffy which is great to see considering most courses have very hard sand or even hard pan. Greens were pretty soft but rolled real nice. Good iron shots held very well. Not sure if that’s always the case here as I bet they will make ‘em pretty fast once the rain stops. Some greens were tough to read with some of the undulations.

All in all a very enjoyable day. Pace of Play was about 4.5 hours. Great for what used to be a private course at one time. Hope to get out here again one day.

Played in the GK Guru event today at GC of Ca. with Jerry64, Zgolfman and DConnally at 11:30. Grass range had good coverage with nice fluffy grass. The landscaping around the clubhouse was as good as I’ve seen it, giving a very nice first impression. Pro shop was friendly and efficient, had me quickly out to the driving range. Practice bunker was still a little muddy and not as nice as those on the course. Practice green was medium pace and similar to course conditions. Tees were lush and level. Fairways had good coverage of tightly mowed mostly Bermuda with many well-repaired divots in the approach areas. Sand was good and hats off to the ground crew for getting them in such nice shape. The greens were in good shape, held shots well, but it was a nice sunny day and the Poa was in full flower by 2:00. They were medium speed and a little spongy by the time we finished. Rough was uneven and a bit thin. They have a really nice bar and a couple craft beers but could use a couple more locals, but got to keep the regulars happy. I do enjoy this course. It has a nice variety of holes that present different challenges than the usual courses I play. The par 5s all play a little differently and even the easy par 4s can give you a number. Had a great time with our group. Couldn’t seem to keep out of Bob’s putting line, but I noticed he stopped making putts after I stopped tramping through his line.

Teed off just before Noon in a Greenskeeper outing. First time playing here in over a year. Forgot how challenging this course is, make sure you play the proper tees for your skill level.

Friendly and helpful service in the Pro shop and with the starter.

The course survived the recent rain storms without any major damage that I could see.

Greens: a little bumpy but to be expect at the end of the day. Speed was medium. Greens were holding.

Fairways: very good for the winter season, great to see green fairways and a majority of divots filled. Not a lot of wet spots on the fairways.

Traps: plenty of sand but some traps not raked by thoughtless golfers.

Rough: some bare spots but not a major problem.

Great practice area!

This course is a must play especially if you can get a special rate!

Played 1-29-17 early morning walking as a threesome in a little over 3 hours for $53.
This course is like playing two different courses, front 9 is a tight tree lined course and the back is wide open in the dunes by the ocean.
Tee boxes were mostly in good shape and semi lush. Fairways were very lush with not much roll mostly because of the recent rains. Rough was thick and wet on the front and low and dry on the back. Greens were in good shape on both sides rolling medium speed and semi smooth.
Fun short course with some great views especially on the back.

Played on Pro Bowl Sunday around 2:40 pm for $39 plus tax (best deal for tee times is through their course website/booking service, call in and refer to the price online). Got paired up on a rather humming Sunday…didn’t have to necessarily wait on every hole but didn’t whiz through the course either. Cart girl saw my group about 2 times per nine so she was definitely customer service orientated.

The courses we played we White to Gold. Probably my favorite nine on this course is the white because of the great design and set up on the holes. This course is just so unique and as you can tell by how many reviews I’ve done on Ocotillo, I always come back.

The course conditions were consistent throughout the course. Because of the rain, some of the bunkers weren’t healthy or fully drained and played as course under repair. But the course played soft and true, greens looked healthy after a rough summer/fall (rough meaning a lot of work done to greens and soaking the overseed in October). The tee boxes and fairways were near identical, couldn’t find a bad lie. The rough was penile at times but with the generous fairways here, scoring isn’t too tough like others in the valley.

Worth the tee fee.

1/31 $25 birthday round on an ideal sc winter day–worked in early by starter for 4 hr POP with some waiting but with the setting and the weather we didnt care–was able to take some extra putts and chips as the 4some following was no where to be seen.
Setting is great–holes are separated–some seem to be 1/4 mile apart as you wind thru the canyons and hills. Generally ample landing areas with at least one fairway side offering some safety– but some forced carries. Fairway conditions quite good with very few wet areas–overall tightly mowed but with good cushion and acceptable roll out. Closely mowed approaches to green which looked to be great for chips but required a precise strike as any shot hit even a little fat would really grab the club or on flops would give too much bounce in to the ball. Rough some what thin and short along most fairways–a little longer and thicker near the greens.
Tees level with good cover. Bunkers well maintained with consistently good quality sand.
The greens are large with quadrants that accentuate the contours providing the opportunity for a range of pin placements that could increase the degree of difficulty by a factor of 10. Speed was a little below medium fast–putts rolled fairly smoothly–but there were many un-repaired or poorly repaired ball marks.
Friendly helpful golfer oriented staff. This is a higher end course that is probably worth the 50-75 $ deals that can be found–but is an absolute must for your birthday play–thanks Crossings and GK for the posting.

Rode the blues this afternoon 1-30-2017 on my home course (71.6-128-6628) with my buddies Steve, Mack and Mack’s buddy Brian on a beautiful low 70’s day with just a slight 5-10mph breeze at times. POP was 4 hours 45 minutes taking our time waiting on some holes for the 3 some in front of us. We paid $32.00 each which is their riding twilight rate Monday thru Thursday.

The recent rain storms really did not lush or green up the fairways. They have a little more padding to them but would still call them thinner dormant grass, You get a ton of roll out here at present time. The course just plain needs more water. Rated 5-10

The rough was green, lush and thick around some of the green complexes. Lining the fairways it is thin, clumpy at times or just hard-pan. Rated 4-10

The greens are in very good shape. Warning they are very firm and hard and at present time. If you are not spinning the ball or have a high trajectory the greens can be hard to hold. You need to play accordingly by landing irons with spin in front of the pins. I thought the greens rolled pure and true. I have seen them actually quicker than today but rolling very nicely. Very few ball marks. Rated an 8-10

The tees are level, lush and in good shape. Rated 8-10

Was in green-side bunker on 3 and 18 contained just enough sand, more compact but easy to splash out of. Really have to loft the SW prior to contact with these bunkers. Rated 6-10.

Very friendly staff, good twilight prices–if you can stand semi-hard-pan links golf fairways and like nice challenging greens this is your place.

Played 1-28-17. What a great day for golf in Monterrey.  It was 65F, clear skies and hardly a breath of wind — Not bad for a little walk in the park.
The course is everything you would expect it to be. Tee boxes level, lush and cut tight. Fairways were in great shape without a blemish. Rough was a little thick and about 2-3 inches and in great shape. Bunkers were close to perfect, just real nice to hit from. Greens were in great shape smooth, semi-soft and rolling true.
This course just has great view after great view. I would highly recommend getting a caddie.  It would just make the day a little more special. I strongly suggest if you are going to spend the money, go all out.

Played in the GK Gurus outing yesterday with David, Vince and Lee. Great seeing David and Vince again and meeting Lee for the first time. I was really looking forward to this as soon as it was posted since I missed out the last go around. Unfortunately I left my golf game back in San Diego.

By far one of the best facilities in the area. The range is enormous with grass tees. There are 2 putting greens and a chipping green. There is also a bunker on the range to work on the fairway bunker shots. One day I plan to fully utilize this. Give yourself extra time to enjoy this if you can.

Reading Sammy’s review prior to coming I was expecting the greens to be firm and boy are they. We were standing on the 12th tee box waiting to tee off and we saw the group behind us hit in the par 3 and I swear one hit a ball on the green which proceeded to bounce 10-15 yds. On the par 3 4th hole both Lee and David hit short of the green and both proceed to roll off on the front right down the swell. The pin was in the front portion of the green. While I don’t think the speed of the putts were super fast but I did have trouble reading the break here. Which I think I have always had that problem here. Some putts I read breaking right, broke left and vice versa.

Fairways were outstanding and I found quite a few of them and they are really nice to hit from. Rough had some teeth to it but I don’t think its penalizing if you were in there. Tee boxes were nice and level except 9 which was on a little down slope but thank goodness for 2 club lengths.

I don’t remember being in a bunker but they looked hard packed.

If I lived closer I would play this course a ton. I think its a fair test of golf and I always contend that 18 is one of the toughest finishing holes I have played. I can’t wait until we get another GK Guru outing here because this course is definitely worth it.

One thing always strikes me when I pull into the parking lot at Goose Creek. Unlike other golf courses, Goose Creek is not a golf course that was built to sell houses, and it’s not intended to be a pretty backdrop for bridal showers and wedding receptions. Like Spyglass, Bandon Dunes, and (the late) Stevinson Ranch, it is clear that this facility clearly puts golf ahead of everything else … as it should be.

I played yesterday in a GKReviewGuru group, teeing off at 12:15, with GK legends dconnally, leef2020, and weber2323. First, I would say that the practice areas at Goose Creek are unrivaled by any public course in Southern California. There is a grass driving range, and putting and chipping greens which are actually large enough so that players can find a spot to practice each element of their game before they tee off.

As for the course itself, it is the perfect mix for my game. Forgiving off the tee, but challenging on and around the greens. The tees were lush and green. The fairways and rough had nice coverage. The bunker I was in had the heavier, coarse sand, but it played fine. I loved the firmness and pace of the smooth greens, though I misread a few putts. The pace of play was about 4:30, which was just fine. Every employee with whom I came in contact was positive and professional.

If you’ve never played here, I strongly recommend making the trip. Goose Creek is a golf course designed for golfers who love the game.

Played the blue tees with the GK Gurus at 1220 on Wednesday, 2/1/17. Thanks to GKers weber2323, leef2020, and stickboy for a fun round. All three of these guys were hitting the ball solidly all day, but they let me play with them anyway, although I was having some bad alignment issues. The weather was great – sunny and warm – it got a little windy over the last 6 holes [they had the blue box on the Chris Berman tee (back, back, back!!) on #17 – all the way back in that tree funnel, dead into that wind – YIKES!!].

Conditions overall were very good. Greens were very firm, cut short and rolled fast. We saw quite a few (small) unrepaired ballmarks, and many greens had quite a bit of small debris on them. When greens are this firm, players need a little help from course in making them a little more lush to be able to control the ball – or, if they are cut this close, they need to be a little softer. For example, in almost all cases, good shots we hit to the par 3s hit and released over the greens.

Fairways had good coverage but were close cut, which resulted in fairly tight lies. Rough was cut short and very playable. Tees were mostly level and okay. We saw some minor divot damage on the par-3 tees – the sand pails there were loamy (powdery!), or so packed/old you couldn’t scrape out any mix, or didn’t have scoops(!). Traps had only a thin playing layer over a very firm base – one that I was in was very wet, the other dry and ‘cemented’.

Saw the cart girl several times and a marshal was riding around. Thanks to Johnny for setting this up, and to my playing partners for their patience. I always enjoy playing the Goose, especially with other GKers.

1/30 using golf moose $63 2 some on a beautiful 70′ am with no one ahead or behind for an easy 4 hr POP roughly 30 minutes of which spent looking for wayward shots, finding most but often in some real awkward places leaving nothing but limited chip outs. Here you have fairway–then some areas of rough–then what is referred to as native areas–brush, rocks sticks and drop offs–some places you don not even want to think about trying to go into but look on the edges hoping the ball hit something to have it stop.
Fairways were in good shape–good cover but mostly dormant winter condition–have dried out since rains with only #5 and #10 CPO and a very few areas of casual water overall.
Tees overall ok # 8 has a little crown to it but not severe. About 1/2 the bunkers still had excess moisture but had an area that was still playable. Fairway bunkers were dry firm and very playable. Rough varied from rather whispy to juicy.
Greens were nice medium fast smooth consistent overall and for me difficult to read as the overall topography is a factor in addition to the contour Greens vary in size from hole to hole.
Staff friendly and welcoming–we plan on returning next week for birthday rounds.
Fun course a little quirky with good variety and with a stroke multiplying factor for mi sh-t s.
