Played Spanish Bay this morning after a bit of schedule change due to heavy rain the last few days and a tournament at Spyglass today. Off to Spanish I go. Used the range up at Pebble (Spanish Bay doesn’t have it’s own range but you can use either Pebble’s or The Glass). Range was on mats and will be until after the US Open. They do offer choice of TP5’s or Project (a) balls for the range.

The Review

On to Spanish Bay on a sunny and delightful morning. Wind free for the first 8-10 holes then a bit of wind on the finishing holes. Tee boxes were excellent. An easy 9+ and that includes the par 3 tees. Fairways were also in great shape ranging between 8-9. I was in two green-side bunkers and both had excellent white semi-fluffy sand. A bit damp from all the recent rain but still excellent to hit out of.

The Greens

After the first semi easy green the rest have severe undulations. They are in the process of doing a light sanding of the greens. We had the front nine clear and they rolled smooth at a medium fast pace. The back nine had already been hit with the sand but still rolled at a medium slow speed. They were in the process of dusting the front greens as we were finishing. It probably won’t take more than a week or two for them to fully recover.

I walked but for May and June they are allowing carts out on the fairways for the first time. Just not this week (due to rain).

Bottom Line

All in all the course is in great shape and worth playing. With all the great views it’s easy to forget about all (4) three putts.

Played only 9 holes on Sunday due to a weather front that came in quick, fast and hard and practically blew us off the course.

We had a big rain over the weekend and was happy to get 9 in but was pleasantly surprised how well the course drains and soaks up water. Had 1 mud ball the entire 9 we played and that was because it in the hard-pan/muddy area right of 1 fairway.

Greens were rolling well but slower than normal and that cost me many strokes! But overall the front 9 was in good shape.

The bunkers on the other hand were covered in rocks. My buddy and I refused to hit out of them because there was so many rocks. I get they probably didn’t get much work due to the rains but man I’ve never seen so many bunkers littered with rocks.

Additional Information

Got a rain check for 9 + a cart to finish our rounds and already looking at the weather!

Played Morro Bay in our annual Eclectic Tournament.

A little drizzle to begin, then a beautiful day until the winds came up. But the course, as usual, was in excellent condition. If you have not played this course, the challenge are the greens. Up and downs are not common but three putts are. If you are above the hole on most greens, you’ve made a great first putt to two putt. There is no water and only three bunkers, so tee to green is not a problem, although it plays longer since the grass allows almost no roll after landing.

I belong to this club as it’s one of my favorite courses anywhere.

This course checked all the boxes for me.

Layout – Fun layout in my opinion. The course is pretty straight forward but you do not feel like you are playing the same hole over and over again. I really enjoyed the finishing holes – 16-17-18. All three are great holes and look like they could be challenging, especially is the wind picks up. Each has water waiting for any errant shot. Great holes. A lot of the greens have run off areas so if you are slightly off on your approach, it could go down the slope and end up 10 yards from the green.

Condition – I thought the condition was great. The fairways and areas around the green are very closely mowed so you have to be very precise with the short game. Tee boxes were in good same. Fairways were excellent – not a bad lie all day. Fairways are pretty generous even though a few holes on the back 9 do run through a housing community.

My Thoughts

If you are ever staying at the Avi or are in the area, I highly recommend this course. It is very close to the Avi Casino (almost walking distance). I was going to go up and play Laughlin Ranch instead of the Mojave Resort Course, but do to time constraints, I was not able to. I was not disappointed and I was actually pleasantly surpised. Go check it out – you will enjoy it. I would definitely play it again if I was in the area.

I played the Firecliff course back in early April when it was predominantly peak season rye grass course. Place was immaculate. Saturday the golf course was predominantly a Bermunda turf course almost fully transitioned and it was in fantastic shape. Greens more firm and faster. Fairways and Rough lush. Tee boxes mostly lush with some thin spots. Bunkers all high quality sand and groomed.

From an organizer perspective the Desert Willow staff is as professional and accommodating as it gets. The practice area is perfectly positioned to the golf cart staging area and first tee of the Firecliff course. The patio and inside facilities are gorgeous. Only disappointment was I thought the restaurant/bar would still be open after our round on Saturday. Guess this time year they close early. I’ll do better research next time. Sorry about that.

Played DW Firecliff for the first time in the GK outing with Leef2020, Rudyclub and Brady and had a great time. Great weather out there with a little wind. The short of it is I thoroughly enjoyed this course. It is a challenging track and what makes it challenging are the many bunkers. There are quite a few. I have played Doral in Miami a number of times which is said to have over 100 plus bunkers. This course exceeds that I am sure and I was in quite a few. On the plus side, the bunkers were in great shape. The fairways were incredible. Lush and great lies out there. It’s been a while since I have played fairways this nice. The rough wasn’t too troublesome for me but you still had to hit it clean to get out of it.

The greens were also great and rolled true but were very hard. Never found my divot marks on the green. They weren’t holding either unless you caught it real clean. Very tricky with the undulations on many of the greens. I found them hard to read and therefore had a few 3 putts.

Staff here was very friendly and free valet was very nice. The resort is rather large and being it was my first time here, it was a little overwhelming trying to find everything. This could be a bit skewed because there were a ton of events (excluding the one I was playing in) going on while I was there.

Greens:

The greens were decently quick and definitely receptive. I was getting large amounts of spin on wedge shots so I had to change up the swing to reduce the rollback. Overall, greens rolled fairly true with some bumps. No dead spots observed.

Fairways:

The fairways were very firm and decently maintained. No bare spots observed. Nothing tricky on these fairways and you could pretty much see everything that the hole had to offer. We played the tournament from the white tees so there a lot of tee shots were taken with less than a driver, however if playing from the proper tee boxes I think the hazards would have provided more of a challenge.

Bunkers:

Bunkers were well maintained and very course grained sand. They were uniform all throughout the course.

Tee Boxes:

Flat and lush with some bare spots. Very Level and decently maintained. Some large deep divots took over a few of the par 3s.

Rough:

About 1″ long and somewhat thin. Resort course so I wasn’t expecting real rough here.

Overall:

This was a nice course and I am glad I got to play it but I would not recommend it for the rack rate. There are much more interesting courses in San Diego for the same price or cheaper.

The last stop on my trip was a bonus round I was not expecting to squeeze in. I’m so glad I was able to, though, because I’ve been dying to play here for a long time. Adding to the appeal was paying the weekday late twilight rate of $43, which was worth every penny. It wasn’t super crowded when I teed off around 3:30, but there were just enough players out there to slow me down a little. I ended up joining another single on the 3rd tee and it was an enjoyable round with still a great pace of just under 3 hours.

The course was in exceptional condition. Seriously, I was impressed at just how nice it was out here. Everything was lush, green and beautifully maintained. Maybe a few thin spots in the rough around some bunkers, but not many flaws to be found. Ideal greens that were firm, yet receptive and rolling pure at nice speeds. Nice bunkers, as well. Just awesome.

If you’ve ever thought about playing here, now is the time because the spring conditions are so wonderful. As for the layout, I loved it. The front nine eases you in with scenic views and somewhat forgiving holes. Then, the back nine really ramps up the drama and challenge as you go up and down the hills, through the canyons and along one signature hole after another. Some players may find the back nine a bit too much, but I really enjoyed it and I couldn’t have asked for a better way to end my trip. Highly recommend this course.
