I joined Mike and Francisco at Paso Robles Golf Club today for their GK Match. Due to rain before (and during ) the round it was walking only which is fine as this course is easy to walk. Only a couple of minor transfers that are stretched out but nothing horrible.

As Mike mentioned the course had a ton of water on it. This is not a course that drains quickly so often times a well struck ball in the fairway would hit a large puddle and just stop. I will say that the fairways had good coverage and were fairly lush. Aside from the water (no fault of the course) the fairways were a joy to hit from. I don’t recall any issues with the tee boxes. Level with decent coverage. Greens were obviously soft from the rain and easily held well struck shots. The greens that didn’t have standing water (and there were only a couple of those right after the 1.5 hour downpour) rolled true at a medium which wasn’t bad considering all the water on the course. Most bunkers had standing water in them, so I can’t comment on the sand.

There were only 2 other golfers out on the course (6 holes ahead of us) so POP wasn’t an issue. Except for the 1.5 hour rain delay which we used to get lunch at the newly renovated restaurant.

The layout is fun with a number of water hazards that come into play on 7-8 holes to keep the mainly flat course from being a snooze fest. #16 is a blast as there is a forced carry over water to cut the dogleg but also water left so the “safe” route is no bargain either.

Overall the course wasn’t too bad given the weather. Heck, I had 8 pars so how bad could it be?! My only suggestion is that Hole 10 be changed to a Par 5. It’s 470 yards with water in front of the green plus plays into the wind. Move the tee’s back 15-30 yards and make it a Par 5. That would also change the course to a Par 71 overall.

Customer service is fantastic as the “kid” who was the one man show over at The Links of Paso is now working here at PRGC. He is super friendly, professional and on top of things.

Paso Robles Golf Course is definitely a recommended track if in the area or traveling through and want to stop and get some swings in.
