3/2 on a breezy warm am for a meet up with my son Grant from Riverside. 1st a big thanks to Jordan the head pro who gave us a discount to come back and play after we got rained out about 1/2 way through our round about a couple of months ago.
Everything is green, fairways have mostly good cover with only a few thin areas–good cushion and yet firm enough to get some extra roll –never had a bad lie but many not flat–some collection areas had quite a few unfilled divots as did the CPO holes as I think the sand bottle is just too heavy. Did not appear to have much rough along the fairways but more near the greens.
Tees lush level and well maintained. Found 2 green side bunkers which had firm compacted sand that was playable. From the looks bunkers looked to be ready for a good machine grooming. Saw standing water in 1 fairway bunker on #4.
The practice green is large and very representative of the greens on the course both as to speed and slope. Greens rolled smooth medium fast to fast. Mostly large sized greens with pronounced back to front slope and some slant following the prevailing topography. Getting above the hole was totally bad news as it was practically impossible to stop the ball once it got even just a little past the hole. Many greens are elevated and have an upper tier so it can be difficult to get the approach to finish near the pin. Greens were also firm and really rolled out.
My low-light adventure was on 17–was just past pin high on the right fringe–nudged a putt that rolled across and down to 4 feet off the green–pitched back up to leave an up hill 10 footer–just missed to the left went 6 inches past, paused and rolled back 8 feet–just missed on the right rolled back 6 feet–made that one!!
POP 4 3/4 as tee sheet was pretty full and 2 of the 4somes ahead were new to HV and lost a lot of balls. No one was really out of position just struggling along. Staff very friendly–drink cart making the rounds regularly.
Nice day to be out very scenic view of the snow caps.
