Joined up with the Gurus yesterday for a windy 85 degree day. Course is in excellent shape right now and very hard to pass up when in the palm desert area. Tee-Green the course is darn near perfect. The greens have signs of a needle punch as well as a hand full of core tests throughout the course. Never did they seem to get in the way. This course is very tough in the wind and you might want to bring a low loft driver to keep the ball down. I normally play a fade and yesterday the wind was wrecking havoc on those shots. IN all a fun day and fun course.

First half of a 36-hole GK Guru day at Desert Willow was on the Firecliff course. We had the 9:40 and 9:50 tee times (6 players, split into threesomes and a single was paired with our second group). I went off first with HmtGolfGuy and mpisarski01, teeing off closer to 9:50. We kept pace with the groups ahead on a busy day, but things moved really well and we were done in about 4 hours.

The course was in excellent shape all around. Great tee boxes and lush fairways throughout. Rough was also very nicely kept and not at all punitive. Bunkers were very nice. The new sand and renovations have officially “matured” since my last round here, so now they are ideal again. The greens were firm-ish and rolling pretty well at medium speeds. A few showed some very small-hole punches that didn’t affect anything. Then most greens had a handful of bigger core holes (maybe 3/4 inch wide) scattered around. They didn’t really affect anything either and I am sure they serve some sort of aeration or turf testing purpose, but we all couldn’t help but notice them.

As always, it was another very enjoyable round on the Firecliff course. It was fairly windy this morning, so that added some challenge to an already demanding course. Great times and great company with the GK Review Guru crew!

Played from the white tees in the first of two Guru groups Thursday. First time here and it lived up to what I’d heard.

From tee-to-green the course is in what I’d call “Goldilocks” condition – tees, fairways and rough were very nice, not too short, not too long, but “just right”. Same for the greens, they accepted a well struck shot but if the trajectory was too flat and/or not enough spin the ball would bounce and roll – not too hard, not too soft, but “just right”.

The bunkers were the most consistent and had the greatest volume of sand of any I’ve played in a very long time. My comment at the time still stands – “The quality of the bunkers far exceeds my ability to play from them”.

Really enjoyed the course layout, holes going in several directions so you had to think out each shot and the effect the wind would have – also more subtle elevation changes than I expected. VERY nice mix of short/med/long par 4’s and different looks/distance/strategies for the par 3’s and par 5’s. Its the kind of course you could play several days in a row and still seem fresh.

Large practice area to warm up, includes a good short game area and the practice green speed was similar to that of the greens on course.

First rate service from arrival to departure, staff was welcoming and pleasant, POP was under 4 hours (even with waiting quite a bit on #10-11) – what more could you ask for?

Round 1 of the Desert Willow GK Guru double dip and not much to add to the previous reviews other than the bunkers are A++ and I know because I visited so many of them that I almost went to HR after the round to ask for a job on the maintenance crew since I basically raked them all personally for them! Oh and the pins were just NASTY today. Either on top of a ridge, turtle’s back, or tucked away in a corner like a Sunday pin on tour. Yikes! Just about everything else I want to say is covered by my fellow Gurus.
