Check in quick and easy, got out early and no one in front of us for the first 14 holes. A twosome behind us after 4 holes but we stayed ahead ( we were a walking foursome ).

Visibility was about 120 yards for the first 7 holes, very difficult, and I do not like playing in fog. With that much fog everything was wet.

The tee boxes were level.  The fairways were very good.  Rough was not to long, you could find your ball.  Traps had sand but was very wet because of the fog.  Greens were semi-hard as not big ball marks, but were a little slow, again because of the fog.

The sun finally came out on #9 and it was a nice day, greens dried out and got a little faster.  Pace of Play (POP) was good at 3:44.

Played our GK Cup match on Sunday at Mile Square and were treated to a course that is in nice shape thanks to all the recent rains and a fun, yet fairly straightforward layout. Blue tees play to 6700 yards so it’s definitely got a lot of long par 4s to challenge you. Fairways are mostly pretty wide open, but there are healthy trees lining most every hole and a few water features on the back nine to contend with on the day.

FYI, if you’re one of those players that likes to rent a push cart, well, they have very old-timey pull carts here with the minimalist of frills that you can get for $10 and they reimburse you $5 after you bring back the handle after your round.

The Review

Right now the fairways and rough are in nice shape with good to lush coverage in most all areas. A few thin spots here and there but mostly good times ahead. Bunkers had nice sand in them but it was made tough by the moist conditions following the morning dew that never seemed to burn off until the end. Tee boxes were flat but a little beat up and in need of some minor attention.

The greens were a spotty mix of colors but actually held shots nicely and rolled pretty true all day. They were medium to medium-fast speed all throughout the round, but are not so tricked out that it creates any major problems. Some ball marks to deal with for sure, but no major complaints.

No cart service all day which was a bit strange for a busy Sunday, but the POP was great as we found a sweet spot with the 7:07 tee time and never really waited throughout the entire round, nor were we dutifully pushed hard by any of the groups behind us. Really worked out great in that respect, probably finishing in right around 4-4.5 hours. Ideal pace.

Final Thought

Shame to hear that they’ll be closing one of the two 18s at Mile Square some time this or next year, but I understand that it’ll be the Players closing its doors, so we’ll still have access to this very nice Classic 18 for many years to come.

Played Thursday, 6/7 at 3:07pm with 3 others. POP was a very good 4hrs, 10mins with mild waits on the first 5 holes, then waiting only on each par3 the rest of the way.

The Review

Though the course is overall very good condition, the white tee boxes were easily the ‘worst’ part of the course. Unlevel lies on 7 of 18 holes, with the worst bumpy and mounded areas on the par3s – 5th, 8th and 13th. The par3 15th was level.

Fairways were mostly good, cut a little long, but provided decent roll and lies. Was very happy to see that after 20+ years they have finally made significant progress on the ‘new’ fairways for the new holes #s 14, 16 and 17. They have clearly added a significant amount of white sand in their efforts to improve the condition of these fairways. 14 is nearly perfect. 16 is at least 75% better coverage in the landing area and 17 is probably 40% better. Glad to see it.

Rough was penal, about 2-3 inches. Was in two greenside bunkers, #8 had white sand and #15 had brown sand. Other than lack of raking in one, the sand in both was good quality and depth.

Greens are totally recovered from their punching and were mostly smooth and firm. Did not hold shots easily, providing 15-30 feet of roll-out for the group on well-struck shots. Putted medium-speed and was tough for all in the group to hole 6 to 10-footers, as the grain / subtle breaks were tough to read. And, I missed a 2-footer that looked straight, but missed by 3 inches! (sigh).

Additional Thoughts

This is a great course to walk, mostly a flat course. Particularly since the cart fees for a single rider is $18. Twilight starts at 1:30pm and Super-twilight at 5:30pm these days, which does provide a decent deal on greens fees when walking.
