Knowing how cold it was going to be, made certain that I played a “walking course” because playing in the cold with a cart can be brutal. Just never can get loose. So back out to Rio Hondo. Kind of knew what to expect after having played here only a few weeks ago, and reading the recent reviews.

Greens better than expected, quicker and rolled better. Fairways were a mixed bag, with some really nice lies, quite a few thin lies, but its winter, so need to cut the course a little slack. Bunkers were OK, at least those which I was in.

Not super busy, perhaps due to the weather, so pace of play was fine. I like this course and the staff is always friendly and accommodating

Played on Friday, Aug. 16th. Had a 1:30 tee time. Course was pretty empty so they let us go off early!

This course has always been my favorite local, affordable course. It was in really good shape. Tee boxes were good, not great, but still plenty of grass. Fairways were the same. Never landed in a bad spot, luckily. I was really impressed with the sand in the bunkers!! Wow!! Every bunker had fluffy sand you’ll find in a higher-end resort course! Good job, Los Amigos! Greens were good, but a lot of knuckleheads refuse to fix their divots.

Bar, clubhouse, coffee shop and (recently added) outside bar are really nice (outside bar is cash only ).

Staff was friendly.

Finished our round in 4 hours or so (had a slow group of Seniors on the last 6 holes, but not that bad). Can’t wait to come back! (BTW- I’m an 18 hdcp, and shot 80 from the Whites, with 29 putts) You’ll like this place!!

Played in what was supposed to be a tournament but became unofficial when too many people cancelled because of forecast rain. The course was great in working with us under the circumstances and getting out those that wanted to play. And it did rain, at times, which really did not affect the course until the last hole when the downpour quickly turned the fairway into a quagmire and the green into a pond. Cart path only (I walked), 5.5 hour round.

The fairways were the worst I have seen them. I play here at least once a year and I have never had a negative opinion of the fairways. For whatever reasons, the grass was sparse in places, many places. Light rough was not a factor. Good sand in the bunkers.

The greens were great. Quite fast with tricky pin positions.

The 19th hole here is great, which we enjoyed with the club member who had a hole in one on number 7. Very nice.

Greens rolled at medium/fast speed. They rolled true. Picked a line an hit the ball firmly and the results were predictable. Noticed the speeds varied from green to green but for the most part they rolled well and you could tell just by walking on them the speed of the greens.

Fairways had decent coverage. Nice cushion underneath. There were a few thin lies but playable.

Bunkers were ALL well stocked with nice somewhat compacted sand underneath. I prefer hitting this sort of sand where the bunker gives you a little feedback and decent bounce to hit your ball.

Rough varied from VERY thick around the green complexes to a little heavy along the sides of the fairway.

Tee boxes were level and playable.

Parting Thoughts

Pace of Play (POP) a little over 3 hours as a single until the last 4 holes. Honestly playing this fast as a walking single that late in the day was FUN. The heat was bearable with a nice breeze towards the end of the day. For the money you get what you pay for and then some. I paid $19 to walk twilight. It was a workout but for the conditions of the course at present it’s definitely worth the value. Recommended.

Played Monday 6/11 at about 0830. Course was open and we played the front 9 in about 2 hours, the back 9 got backed up and we played in total in about 4:40.

Tee boxes were nice and above average. Good coverage without much divot damage and mostly flat lies.

Fairways were in good shape with good lies.

I was not in any greenside sand, but I did find myself in a fairway bunker. No complaints. My playing partner did complain of a firm lie in a greenside bunker.

Rough varies from thick and lush to moderate/fluffy.

Greens are nearly fully recovered from aeration. Practice green still shows the most from the aeration, but I had no complaints as the greens rolled pretty true with slightly faster than medium speed.

Recommended at this time.
