Golf Course Review 8.44 GREAT
Golf Course Review 8.44 GREAT

Played 5/24 at 8:15 with some friends and had a blast like usual. Course is in great shape right now and from tee to green is lush. I dont have a lot to add from my last review a few weeks ago but the greens have healed 100% and are d%mn near perfect right now. Smooth, quick, and not a divot to be found. Fairways had full coverage but on hole 16 they are losing the new sod and will need to work hard to keep it alive.

Speaking of hole 16 they still haven’t changed the tee boxes for the hole and the scorecard and GPS says its a Par 5. on the card it says 490 yards from the whites but it played 400 on this day and I cant see where they are going to put the tips at 550+ yards I am not sure why they are doing this change but hole 13 is now a 350 yard par 4 but was a 500+ yard very challenging par 5. Only time will tell what their plans are but for now enjoy a 400 yard par 5.

The last thing to note was how nasty the rough is right now. It was probably 3-4 inches and very tough to get out of. Very fun challenge and caused issues on multiple occasions. In all the course is still in great shape and I recommend it highly if you can find a deal.

Golf Playing Conditions 6.25 GOOD

Although you can’t compare DL with any of the nice resort courses, conditions here now are better than I’ve ever seen previously. When we played here previously, we were generally happy with the conditions but always complained of the “spongy” greens. For all 3 rounds this week, greens were smooth, soft and rolled true at medium speed. If they can keep this up during the summer, we certainly won’t regret having signed up for the year.

The only playing issue we have is on hole #6, there’s nothing to stop your ball from rolling back into the water on right if you can’t hit the green in two. Since we don’t have the length from the back tees, we just hit from the forward tees on that one.

Pace was an issue today. We did finish in 4 hours but had to wait on most shots. Seems if you start at 6, you can finish in 3 hours but later than that it’s back to 4 hour rounds.

I’m told wearing a mask in clubhouse or on course is not mandatory now but we did keep ours on since the weather was pleasant. I’d certainly recommend playing Dl now.

Played here 5/22 as part of GK Cup match with Ron on a wonderfully sunny and not very breezy Friday with a 7AM tee time. Course was packed today and I can see why; it’s in fantastic shape. Standard COVID-19 precautions in place.

Golf Course Playing Conditions 6.97 GOOD
Golf Course Playing Conditions 6.97 GOOD

Tee boxes: Good shape, a few with some uneven lies, but nothing that would cause major issues (avocado tee boxes).

Fairways: Good to excellent shape with good roll especially as the day progressed. Lies today were more than fair, even as no divot mix was available to fill the holes.

Rough: Penal in areas where it exists, though the natural lateral areas and non-rough areas were far more penal. A large amount of trees in play on the entire course make you think about your shots more carefully.

Sand: Was only in one bunker, but it had a good amount of sand that was just the consistency I like. No rakes obviously however no issues with footprints.

Greens: Good shape, few divots, roll was fair. Breaks on these large greens can be tricky at times, but if I am making putts, they can’t be that hard to master.

ETC: Please see review from GK Cup match. Highly recommend coming out here as conditions are good and it’s a walkable course.

I really enjoyed this course. There are elevation changes, doglegs, and water hazards that keep things challenging. Of specific note, most greens have this 3 or 4 leaf clover type shape. Sometimes this can result in the hole being some 50 yard difference between being in a front corner or a back corner, and each “leaflet” of the clover kind of acts like it’s own tiny green, so landing spots are small.

Overall the course is in good condition.

Tee boxes look nice, are flat, and have minimal damage.

Fairways are green but some areas have dry crabby spots.

The rough wasn’t too penal and was around 2 inches and consistent throughout.

Sand conditions were soft and good in the few green side bunkers I was in.

The greens were firm and rolled medium to medium fast and true. Some of the more undulated spots made for dicey downhill putts.

Customer service was good. Social distance measures were in place, but the practice range and practice putting green were open as well as the on course bathrooms, which was nice.

Recommended, especially with the Underpar deal currently offered.

Played on Saturday 5/9 with a high school golf coach buddy and his friends for $65. We waited on a few holes early with a twosome in front of us, and was waved through a slow foursome around 12 to finish around 3:30.

C19 adjustments: max 4 in the pro shop (same group); can pay online or at the course; separate carts unless same household; no restaurant but they set up an outside BBQ (at the turn for Lakes, but no way for Desert, either before or after the round); no sand on carts but they had coolers with 2 bottles of water; 1 side of the range was open; no flags on practice green; short game area open;
cups are reversed.

1st time on Desert and I’m liking it. It has a Coyote Springs Lite vibe to it (different designers). Conditions are good, but not great. Tee boxes have some knobs, especially on the par 3s. Fairways were fast and firm, with no hardpan or thin areas. Rough was about 1 inch, a little thicker/longer around the greens. Sand, a bit hard and heavy, which doesn’t fit the design; there’s some small deep bunkers that are impossible with the current setup. The greens. How I want to love the greens, but they were on the medium speed side with some bumps. Practice green was faster.

Staff was great. Easy check in. Friendly starter. Only saw the drink cart once, as she was working both courses, luckily it was around 9. Cart barn guys/girls at the end of the round to drive your cart back from the parking lot if you wish.

Final Thoughts

This course has such great bones/potential. It’s a Fazio design for $65 when the other Fazios courses in Vegas start at $500. It was the only course open for a couple of weeks, but now there’s plenty of tee times available. I loved the course, trying not to say it’s better than Lakes (recency bias) but they’re pretty equal. Wish it was about $20 less right now considering the 1 hour drive for me.

After not playing golf for the last few months I got the invite to join my brother Matt, Tim, and Jim to play a round yesterday 5/10/20 at Rams Hill. I have only played this track a few times in December for the GK Play events, so I was interested to see spring conditions. As we pulled up to the course we were asked to wear a mask in the clubhouse and we had our temp scanned.

They give you a wristband that show you are good to go. All the staff was extremely friendly as usual.

Kitchen for to go food and drinks. Got an amazing breakfast burrito and headed to the range. Range was immaculate as always and it is always nice to warm up with the ProV1 range balls. After remembering how to swing, I headed over to the practice green to to see if the putter still worked and met up with the rest of the group.

We teed off in individual carts and off we went. Pace of play was fantastic at just under 4 hours and we never waited on a hole. As we headed off down the fairway to hit our second shots, we noticed no coolers or sand to fill divots in the carts.

After landing in a fairway bunker I had to foot rake my steps the best i could as rakes were pulled to make sure no Covid could be spread. If you landed in someones foot or swing mark, you received a free drop. Bunkers were mostly fluffy white sand with exception to one damp bunker I found.

Fairways were perfect with no bare spots and hardly any discoloring from the recent heat wave. Tee boxes were lush and flat and occasionally wet from morning watering. Rough was short and not too penal.

Greens were firm but receptive and not too fast. Made for good reads and only one or two 3 putts for the group. Also Rams hill has added these ball retrieve devices to the cups so you can lift you ball out with your putter. Pretty slick and helps the old back when you pick up you ball. I personally hope these are adopted by more courses in the future.

Final Thoughts

All in all great day with a good group on a great course. Rams Hill is a must play right now as their season wraps up next month. Get out there and play a round before summer heat really sets in. Next week looks to be in the mid 80’s.

One thing I forgot is they had a an employee wearing PPE driving the course delivering ice cold waters every few holes. This was fantastic and made the nearly 100 degree heat completely manageable. Every time I play Rams Hill I’m truly impressed by quality of the course and the staff. I cant wait to go back. – ALEX

I teed off at about 11:30 on Wednesday, the first day the course has been open since closing due to the pandemic. Only players with tee times allowed on the property. No practice facilities open. Masks required only in the clubhouse area. No food or beverage. Walking only. Flag sticks on greens. Restrooms on course are open.

The course was in GREAT shape. Lush and green all over. They had obviously maintained the course while it was closed. The fairways were a little long, but the rough was cut to a fair length. The bunkers were OK, considering. The greens were not as quick as usual, but I think they might have put a little extra water on them, thinking it was going to be hotter.

This is a great course to play after a layoff, as there is lots of room off the tee. Pace of play was around five hours, but that’s pretty standard when you tee off late morning.

Ventured out to Hunter Ranch yesterday to play with Sal, Alex, and Robert. We had a 7:50 tee time and payed rack rate which I deem fair for the conditions. Not much to add to Sal’s review but I really enjoyed the course layout and challenge.

? Fairways were lush and cut perfect allowing great cushion for your shots with ample roll out.

? Rough was mostly lush and long in length which helped keep shots from going ob many times.

? Greens were firm and medium/fast. I believe we only saw one shot with spin on it all day and that is rare because I love to spin shots. Flags were taken out but most of the holes you could see the PVC raised cup plus the score card lets you know what sector the pin would be on each hole.

? Tee’s were fine and I didn’t notice anything to complain about.

? The sand I was not a fan of, the consistency was that of beach sand real heavy and soft making it hard to play precision shots

Overall if you are within 2 hours of this course its worth a play.
