Golf Playing Conditions 6.28 GOOD

Well after Elkins, I realized I was very close to Tierra Rejada and since I had missed the recent GK Guru play and reading the recent reviews, over I went.

Check in was easy/fast. Got right out before a 4 some and played the front 9 fast, only seeing a 3 some on # 3 and they let me through on # 4. I think John’s review says all you need to know about the conditions. I, like John said, love the par 3’s (including # 17). And I had no problem with #13.

The only issue I had today, was with the marshal. He saw me waiting on # 11 and asked how it was going? I told him that the 3 some in front was slow and their music (yes music) was annoying. And the 4 ladies in front of the 3 some, looked like any one of them might collapse at any moment? All he said was “OK have a good round.” Passed it on to the Pro shop, for what it was worth. Except for the marshal, customer service was excellent.

This is a great layout, but you really need to play the right tees for your level of play, to get the maximum enjoyment. Recommended.

Played as a single 6/10/18 at 0950am.  Was out almost right away which was awesome since it was Sunday and the course was busy. Staff is very accommodating.

First time here and I loved it.  The views are spectacular!  Don’t forget to bring your camera.

The Review

Golf Playing Conditions 8.11 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 8.11 GREAT

The tee boxes were level.  The fairways had mostly good coverage except in some places here and there.  The rough was cut down and balls could easily be found and not very penal.  Sand traps were the only thing lacking with this course.  Some were just dirt and some had sand.  I feel as if they were compressed down like they have been watered too much. The greens were the best part.  Greens rolled well and were really fast.

Parting Thoughts

I would definitely play here again now that I know the layout better.

We played Rio Secco Golf Club this morning June 11th at 7:30am. The weather was mid 90’s at the start and well into the 100’s upon completion.

The Review

The pace of play is usually about 4 hours in the mornings here, but we were behind a rather slow group on the front 9. The Marshall asked them to let us through at the turn. We finished in 4.5 hours.

The condition of the course was fantastic. They had just punched the greens 7 days prior and even though you could see the tine marks, the greens were rolling true and a little quicker then earlier in the season. The greens were soft as well from the aeration. The fairways, rough, sand traps, and tee boxes were all in great shape. It has been hotter then typical the last 30 days and the superintendent is on top of it.

Parting Thoughts

I love this course. Summer rates have been put in place as of June 1 and this is a must play while in Las Vegas and it is a great value in this off season.

I loved the layout the way it trailed through hills, elevation changes, doglegs, scenery, challenging yet fair, fun greens, exciting approach shots. Was a fun blend. I thought the conditions were great with beautiful healthy greens (medium speed, smooth and holding shots), excellent coverage in the fairways, quality sand in the bunkers, nice tee boxes, the only aspect of the golf course that was mostly lush but dry and thin at times was the rough. Overall, considering how dry that region is, they are doing an excellent job keeping it watered. I agree with sparky14 that you can see some of the region heat effects with browning areas. But every lie had plenty of grass cushion. My guess given their commitment to keeping it lush (their owner plays the course himself virtually everyday) they will probably just water it more to combat the heat. POP yesterday was only 4 hrs. Just an FYI, right now they are doing a major upgrade to the driving range so it will be closed for some time.

I thoroughly enjoyed this golf course, I can’t believe it took me over 15 years since launching Greenskeeper.org to finally play it! Highly Recommended.

Arnold Palmer course in Palm Springs that is a must play when in town. Played last weekend in 104 degrees temp. It was actually a comfortable round. Not a lot of people playing so there was no waiting and we finished as a 2some in under 3 hours. Carts had ice chest/coolers with 2 bottles of water which was nice.

Had purchased the underpar voucher but there are deals available. Even their website had rates ranging from $58 to $85 (depending on what time).

We had time to hit the expansive driving range. Lots of open stalls.

Course was in great shape. Tee to green – lush and very good condition. Greens rolled true and was quite fun to putt. They were firm but fair. GPS on the carts were great. We had some issues with our handheld GPS though – i suspect probably from the rerouting done with the course. The 16th 180y par 3 was highlight on the back 9. I thought the 18th was anticlimactic.

Staff was excellent. From the proshop to the people in the grill. Food was decent.

Right now would be the best time to go before they do maintenance end of the month and temps are still bearable.

Golf Playing Conditions 7.02 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.02 GREAT

Been over 8 years since I visited Glen Ivy’s Golf Course. New Ownership took over 2 years ago and the improvements are very apparently once you pull up to the parking lot. Spoke to the cart attendant, who was very happy with the new ownership. Customer service was good through everyone I interacted with. The facility was as I remembered, nice clubhouse with a separate dining bar area with reasonably priced food, free tap water with lemon and $1 bottle waters!

Now to the course.

The tee boxes need leveling on most of the blue tees and divot repair. The fairways and rough were in good summer shape and the highlight of the course were the greens, smooth for the most part, running around 9/10 and quicker as the day got hotter. The layout was exceptional. I forgot the unique variety of holes here. The sand traps (fairway and greenside) were raked and had decent coverage as I was in them almost 6 times. Had the wonderful pleasure of finally playing with JohnnyGK himself and Steve and Rich!

In the glory days, the course was very scenic between the vistas and the various ponds and running fountains. Obviously, because of the drought, many of the water elements have dried up. There is still water on Hole 18.

Look forward to returning in the near future.

Golf Playing Conditions 6.28 GOOD
Golf Playing Conditions 6.28 GOOD

I played here about 6 months ago and was thrilled with the conditions this time around.

The highlight of the course, as per usual, was the greens. They were fantastic. would rate 8.5/10 due to some inconsistencies in speed and receptiveness. They rolled true and generally held shots well.

The fairways were lush and provided a great hitting surface. There were some dry spots but mostly on the steeper slopes in the fairways. Not necessarily bad since it prevented the ball from stopping on those steep slopes.

The tee boxes were good as well.

Was in a few bunkers throughout the day. the green-side bunkers were stocked with nice sand, fairway bunkers had good sand as well but were spotted with some pebbles.

Overall a fun day with the gurus and would like to get back out to TR soon.

Recent Golf Course Reivew Cimarron Golf Resort BOULDER Cathedral City California

Cimarron Golf Resort (Boulder)

Cathedral City, CA

Reviewed by: sixpez, Rancho Mirage, CA
Played 36 on the Boulder course today with Itslikeimsayin. One review.

It’s kind of become an annual tradition because Underpar always puts out the killer deal of $39 total for two players with a same-day replay. We teed off our first round at 6:24 with a single who left after about 11 holes. First round approx. 3 hours and then slower during the second round, but still around 4 hours for that round.

The Review

Golf Playing Conditions 5.93 GOOD
Golf Playing Conditions 5.93 GOOD

The course was in pretty nice pre-summer shape from tee to green. Tee boxes were good, though a few are a bit unlevel. Fairways nice and lush for the most part with some scattered thin/brown/bare patches. Rough nicely kept with some weak spots, too, cut low and very enjoyable to hit from with the ball sitting up. Rough was generally very nice around the greens, as well. Mark encountered a gravel pit in the right fairway bunker of the first hole, and I had a lot of pebbles in the greenside bunker of that same hole. However, the rest of the bunkers I was in had good sand.

The greens were bit all over the place, especially as they were watered early, dried out and watered again as we played two rounds. Speeds tended to vary from hole to hole. There were a few greens (especially holes 1-2) that were really beat up and burnt out. Then, the majority were fine, rolling anywhere from dreadfully slow to medium (usually when you’re not expecting it to run out on you). Like I said, really varied based on wetness/dryness, thin-ness, etc. of any given green. They are aerating the greens next week, so they’ll be transitioning to the summer turf soon enough and that will probably help overall.

Parting Thoughts

I kind of have a soft spot for this course because we play it every year with this great deal and now it’s very close to home for me. It’s not a destination course, but it’s a solid enough round of golf. Very forgiving layout and I’d say generally above average conditions, especially in relation to the deals they offer throughout the late spring and summer months.
