Congratulations to Rams Hill Golf Club for winning Best Playing Conditions 2017 for San Diego County.

Not to be confused with “Worth the Green Fee,” “Best Playing Conditions” is awarded to golf courses open to the public listed on Greenskeeper.org that stand out above the rest with our site users at providing consistently the best greens, fairways, rough, tee boxes and bunkers around.

Greenskeeper.org’s trademark and creed, “Know Before You Go”®, centers on communicating these current playing conditions. The rating system used on Greenskeeper.org is in part created by superintendents.

Golf Playing Conditions 9.48 IMMACULATE
Golf Playing Conditions 9.48 IMMACULATE

I joined in the GK fun on 1-7-18. This was my fourth time to Rams Hill and it still surprises me to see this beautiful oasis out in what seems to be the middle of nowhere. From the lady who greeted me at the entrance gate, to the staff at bag drop, pro shop, restaurant and starter, everyone was very friendly and efficient. After a nice breakfast on the patio, we headed out for some warm up. The range is one of the best. It’s completely green, has plenty of targets and is stocked with ProV1 balls.

The course was in its usual fabulous condition. The fairways and rough are lush and emerald green, the bunker sand soft and deep, and the greens smooth and fast. The layout is a lot fun. I played from the red tees which is make the course pretty short at 4900+ yards but no less challenging with the many sloping fairways, bunkers and false fronts. The 18th is one of the toughest finishing holes I’ve played. A decent score still eludes me on that one so I will look forward to returning for another try.

The course recently re-opened after a renovation. I never played the old course previously called “Desert Rose” but several in our group had and give the new course rave reviews in comparison. This course in a Links Styled track, with undulating greens and tiers. There is a flood control drainage ditch which runs thru the entire course from hole 1 – 18. The “ditch” runs along the right side of every hole. off the tee, many holes appear to have quite narrow landing area in the fairway.

One of the guys in my group hit a straight as a string drive off the tee on 7 which landed in the middle of the fairway. We watched his ball roll to the right , off the fairway and down to “the ditch”. Therefore the tip of all tips for this course. DO NOT GO RIGHT! Even if your ball doesn’t find the actual water , the 4 inch rough and severe slope will create an awkward lie with the ball well below or above your feet on a drastic angle. A resident golfer here told me ” You have to remember they designed it as a flood control basin FIRST and golf course SECOND.” Which means the entire course slopes toward the drainage ditch. The ruff that borders the right side of the fairways is probably 3-5 inches thick in spots . Surely an effort designed to help balls stay on the course and out of “the ditch.”

Additional Thoughts

There are a couple of what I call ‘goofy’ or cartoon holes but all in all, the course was in fantastic shape. The guys in our group all said they had never seen the greens in such great shape. They were FAST ! And like many links courses, the greens were a formidable defense if you were out of position. I’m not a huge fan of links courses but I rather enjoyed this track once I realized that a 3 iron off the tee on most holes was sufficient to leave about a 150 yard 2nd. Great Value ! $25 round and that came with a $10 voucher for lunch afterward!

Walked the Tips at River Ridge Vineyard Golf Course on Tuesday 9/5/2017 teeing off at 8:40am with some buddies(Matt,Mack and his buddy). Our POP behind several slower groups in the morning was 4 hours 30 minutes. Used the free birthday round that River Ridge offers 2 weeks before or after your birthday.  Sign up with their e-club online and provide drivers license at

clubhouse.

Weather was beautiful-foggy in the morning and the sun came out on the back nine–mostly in the high 70’s. The Lakes course was closed due to aerification so the Vineyard course was crowded. I always enjoy River Ridge’s beautiful and challenging layouts. The staff here is always very professional. Marshall’s provided a ride up the hill to 3 tee along with a ride from 13 green to 14 tee which was appreciated!
The greens were rated a 7/10 for me.
They were listed as a 9.5 on the stimp in the pro-shop. I thought they putted medium to slow speed and were rolling fairly well with just a few bumps here and there. Very few divots and looked nice. The fairways contained very lush green Kikuyu grass and you had perfect lies in the fairways. My buddy thought they were a little thick but I thought they were in very good shape for the end of summer.  Rated 8/10
Was in fairway bunker on #17 that contained raked and more compact sand which was nice. Was not in any green side bunkers so could not rate them. The tees were mostly level and lush containing Kikuyu grass. Some divots filled in with sand on the par 3’s. Rated 7/10
The rough is very healthy lining some of the fairways. Very green and a club grabber. They had some of the maintenance mowers cutting it down between #10 and #11 as we were playing. Rough rating 8/10.
Layout has some strong long par 4’s and a couple of tough par 3’s with one of them being the finishing island hole which was playing 215 to a back pin today plus a 10 mph breeze. Playing this course for free today was unbelievable. For the GK coupon walking for $28 bucks in the morning is one of the better if not the best morning coupon that GK has around. Had a blast today capped off by an eagle chip in on hole 1. Highly Recommended.

Playing Conditions 8.05 GREAT
Playing Conditions 8.05 GREAT

Played here yesterday with 3 others at 7:15am finishing at 11:30 walking. Paid $28 dollars thanks to GK coupon and what a great deal.

The course is still recovering from recent punching done 3 weeks ago. The fairways were still showing signs of the holes which made lies in the fairways inconsistent but very playable. The rough was pretty long and tough to get out of so hitting the fairways was key to making pars. The tee boxes were level and a little patchy but caused no problems when teeing off and the sand traps were great. The best of all were the greens.  With the exception of hole number #1 (which was beat up and bumpy for some reason) the greens were smooth, fast, and held extremely well.
A great course at a great price and give this place another week to heal and it will be a must play. The Vineyard Course is now being punched so will need a few weeks.

Playing Conditions 7.30 GREAT

A word to the wise… if you like roller-coasters this might be the right course for you. I’m not a fan of roller-coasters or courses that make a difficult game much more difficult.

Black Gold has very friendly service and facilities and is well maintained. But this is a case of not having the right earth to put a golf course on. This one is laid over some rough, hilly terrain. This leads to some fairly extreme elevation changes and lots of blind shots. In addition, the architect seemed afraid of giving any impression of ease so even if you negotiate the many humps and dips and never-level lies, they have pot bunkers and barranca waiting for you. Once you make it to the green your trials are not over. These quick, immaculate greens have plenty of slope and run-off to take a light-touch putt right off the green.

The course is constantly scenic, with great expansive views—but you are also often playing down canyons of houses which adds a little anxiety to a wayward drive. Locals, who have played the course many times will be much more comfortable. But if this is your first time, bring extra balls and prepare to be punished. ALSO—note the slope ratings. You may often play Blue tees.

The Whites are sloped at 125 here—and I’m not sure if that is accurate (should be a 2-3 points higher IMO). Play the Whites. If you normally play Whites, play the Gold. Don’t kid yourself. The course won’t.

Early morning tee time on Sunday. Check in was smooth and the course looks great. Forecast was for 20 mile an hour winds and we had no wind on the first hole, but when we got to the second hole the wind started up. Some of the tee boxes were not level and were a little chewed up, fairways and rough had good coverage with a couple holes being CPO. Greens were in very good condition with little divot damage and holding shots. Speed was a little on the slow side thank goodness because with the wind it would have made it a rough putting day. Couple bunkers were muddy and the couple I was in were on the crusty side. Staff was friendly and helpful.POP was a little over four hours. Lot of different lies even in the middle of the fairway.
They are running a 20 year promotion that gives two for one green fees. Really good deal.

Played in the men’s club today and teed off right on time and finished in 4:45. I thought the pins were in tough positions contributing to the slower pace.

Greens are still pretty soft and with all the traffic I thought were a little too wobbly. They still had some good speed to them but it was just tough to putt not knowing if your ball would get knocked off line. I think if they can dry out so they can be fooled and cut consistnely then they would be fantastic to putt on. Never really noticed and dead spots and ball marks seemed to have been fixed too.

Fairways were great. Mowed nice and tight and still soft to hit from. No evidence of any wet spots.

Rough has been cut down but make but make no mistake it could still be trouble. It was really a crap shoot.

Found the sand a few times and it’s fine. It’s more on the firm side rather than soft but that is the norm here. I say both green side and fairway bunkers were the same consistency.

Saw the marshal and cart girl several times.

Played here 2/12/2017 with fellow GK members Nat P., Jon P., and all the way from Michigan Bill A.   We were using an UnderPar deal for $90 each with a free replay round. Unfortunately today was a tale of highs and lows with Journey. The course was nearly immaculate; every aspect was dripping in lush green conditions and visually stunning, however the entire course was Cart Path Only (CPO) and made for a round that was a few minutes short of 6 hours. It was by far the longest round of golf I have ever played and had it not been for the perfect conditions and amazing company, this would have been a complete waste of a trip. The entire property is under construction so getting to the course was a bit tricky too. The actual course condition review:

Tee-boxes: The “worst” aspect of the course but they were still in good condition. There wasn’t much in the way of chewed up boxes and because the course offers several tee options, I think the turf sees far less damage than the courses that only have Red/White/Blue.

Fairways: Absolutely stunning. The recent rains really left them in great shape. Not muddy and not soggy, granted there wasn’t a heck of a lot of roll but the lies were all great.

Rough: Wonderful condition but tough to hit out of. The biggest test at this course is always the areas just outside the rough, but the rough itself was still penal.

Bunkers: I was only in two but both had good sand coverage that allowed for good shots. There are ample rakes in each bunker and they looked to be maintained well.

Greens: Wonderful roll and pretty quick in my opinion. A shame to see so many groups leave marks on them though without the slightest desire to fix. Visually not as great as the rest of the course but they really rolled true.

ETC: Staff was extremely friendly. Carts here are top-class with wonderful GPS. Waters, towels, and coolers all provided. Cart girls were ever present. Didn’t see a single marshal though I am not sure that would have prevented slow play today. 6 hour round made it hard to enjoy to its fullest and CPO all day led to serious fatigue on a course that couldn’t offer walking as an option even if they wanted to. Food options at the turn and in the restaurant were tasty. On a great deal, this is one of the best in So. Cal.
