Golf Course Review 8.44 GREAT
Golf Course Review 8.44 GREAT

Played 5/24 at 8:15 with some friends and had a blast like usual. Course is in great shape right now and from tee to green is lush. I dont have a lot to add from my last review a few weeks ago but the greens have healed 100% and are d%mn near perfect right now. Smooth, quick, and not a divot to be found. Fairways had full coverage but on hole 16 they are losing the new sod and will need to work hard to keep it alive.

Speaking of hole 16 they still haven’t changed the tee boxes for the hole and the scorecard and GPS says its a Par 5. on the card it says 490 yards from the whites but it played 400 on this day and I cant see where they are going to put the tips at 550+ yards I am not sure why they are doing this change but hole 13 is now a 350 yard par 4 but was a 500+ yard very challenging par 5. Only time will tell what their plans are but for now enjoy a 400 yard par 5.

The last thing to note was how nasty the rough is right now. It was probably 3-4 inches and very tough to get out of. Very fun challenge and caused issues on multiple occasions. In all the course is still in great shape and I recommend it highly if you can find a deal.

Best Playing Conditions Award 2019 by GreensKeeper.org

This year GreensKeeper.org awards Journey at Pechanga Best Playing Conditions 2019 for the Inland Empire.

Not to be confused with “Worth the Green Fee,” “Best Playing Conditions” is awarded to golf courses open to the public listed on Greenskeeper.org that stand out above the rest with our site users at providing consistently the best greens, fairways, rough, tee boxes and bunkers around.

The job of the superintendent is the life blood of the golf course and most important contributing factor to enjoying a golf experience.  A golf course is a living, breathing organism whose health is constantly in flux.  It takes enormous dedication, resources and expertise by a superintendent and their staff to provide excellent turf conditions.

Golf Playing Conditions 7.93 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.93 GREAT

Played mid-morning here today.  It’s the second time I’ve played Journey.  I really like the layout of this course.  There’s plenty of elevated tee shots with gorgeous views everywhere. Scenic creeks run through holes and there is plenty of water.

Definitely target golf.  So if your game is not on, expect to lose a few balls. customer service is generally good here which is expected, from the bag drop to the starter. Range balls and a chipping area is included with your round.

As mentioned in the previous review, tee boxes are a bit shaggy but you could always find a place to play from. Fairways are lush and in good shape, not dry don’t expect too much roll. Rough is that thick, nice stuff, enough to grab your club or make you duff your chip. Bunkers were thick full of nice, white sand.  Unfortunately I was in 3 or 4 of them.  Greens were running quick with a lot of crazy undulation on these, 10 and 18 come to mind.

Leave yourself underneath the hole. Expect a workout and a challenge.  This isn’t your typical resort course, but I always enjoy when i can get out here.

Golf Playing Conditions 8.14 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 8.14 GREAT

After years of hearing fairly mixed reviews of Journey at Pechanga, everything ranging from ‘spectacular’ to ‘gimmicky and unfair,’ I finally had the chance to find out for myself on Wednesday during a work scramble tournament while staying down in Valley Center at Harrah’s for the three-day event. And of course, now I have my own thoughts.

First off, the course is likely (from what I’ve seen at least), the best manicured course in the fine golfing Temecula area, with the only exception of one super dry and out of place 3rd hole fairway. The rest? Really nice, green and lush. I would even consider some of the holes pristine. Overall the place is in super nice condition. As for the layout, well, you really get it all here. If you hate elevations, long carries, or angling around a few lakes, this may not be the course for you. But I loved it. There’s just no escaping the variety of holes here and each one feels quite unique. Gimmicky? Maybe in some places, like a fairly blind green to finish on 18, or the trees that serve little purpose but to torment on holes like 7 and 9. Yes, you’re going to have to think you’re way through lots of this course. Fine with me but may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

As for conditions, the fairways once again were pretty fantastic all around. Tee boxes were great with a few just slightly uneven, but good coverage. The sand was in really nice shape as well from picking up wayward balls out of bunkers, but of course in a scramble we never ended up playing out of any of them (our team shot a bogey-free six-under 66). Rough could be very thick and penal in places but not terrible. Lots of OB areas or easy places to find yourself ball hunting.

The greens, or more precisely, the green complexes were very compelling and tough. Very nice condition overall – receptive to shots, true to their lines and all variety of tough-to-read breaks and slopes. There are some real doozies at Journey at Pechanga so you’ll have your work cut out for you to have a good round with the short stick. This is the kind of place where being able to keep the pin in will be a bonus for long lags or downhill putts. Some very intense slopes and tiers to deal with as well for added fun. They’re tough, but super fun.

POP is a useless observation thanks to the tournament but don’t worry about that too much as the great views and super golf will quickly make you forget about any time considerations. Full service snack bar at the turn and a massive clubhouse with all you need. We also had cart service running around at various points of the day so they did a great job with that.

Really looking forward to coming back and playing a proper round soon so I can test myself against this really unique course with a little knowledge of the layout. Hope I’m hitting the ball as well as I was yesterday though when I do go back.

Golf Playing Conditions 8.32 GREAT

Decided to head out to Pechanga for a little golf and gambling. We bought the Underpar deal which includes 2 people for $200 and a bounce back certificate. I kinda knew in the back of my head that there would be a frost delay due to the very cold overnight temperatures. Right when we walked in at 7:30 there was a sign stating that there was indeed a frost delay. The clubhouse staff let us know that we had about an hour or so before they could open the range. We decided to eat at the restaurant and the breakfast was spectacular. About thirty minutes after arriving the staff came around and let everyone know that they were going to start teeing off in 10 minuets. The only issue we had was instead of a shotgun they just teed off in order so we still ended up teeing off 1 hour after our tee time.

The Review

Course is in fantastic shape right with the exception of some Ground Under Repair (GUR) on 2,7,16,18 which are Cart Path Only (CPO) they looked to have suffered some storm damage and they had laid new Sod down already. Other than those minor issues all fairways were near perfect with consistent roll and fluffy lies. The Rough was very nasty which makes for 3 rounds in a row where balls were easily lost in the 3-5 inch rough, I will have nightmares about this for weeks. Greens were running about a 12 on the scale and were mostly firm. The par three’s seemed to be little softer than others which was a good thing. Tee’s need to be moved but they all were well spaced and provided a level hitting surface. I did notice that each hole had 2-3 Super Lush tee boxes that maybe they are using for a tournament. These boxes were twice as nice as what they were using so it was a little confusing. I was not in any sand but per my playing partners it was fantastic.

Overall this place is a lot of fun and usually has fantastic conditions. Staff is super friendly even with the craziness of a frost delay and 5hr Pace of Play (POP.) I will gladly come back anytime. Even if you pay rack rate I think its still worth it.

Golf Course Conditions 7.96 GREAT
Golf Course Conditions 7.96 GREAT

10:10am Sat. tee time at the Journey and a Pace of Play (PoP) of 5 hrs which included short waits at many tee boxes. The course and surrounding resort are visually stunning considering you’re in Temecula and the area has some interesting rolling hills and water features. Lucky to play here in the Spring when everything is green and flowers are blooming. Well thought out layout with a large variety of golf holes … a bit of course knowledge is helpful but not required as they have good GPS on the carts. Not a walking course due to some super long distances between greens and tees. A bit pricey ($110 as hotel guests) but once in a while it’s worth it and the Journey I would agree is worth it … maybe only once a year.

Conditions were very good, tee to green. A few bare areas in fairways which did not deter the beautiful surroundings. Rough mostly lush but some thin area the farther away you move from the fairways. Greens running medium speed … true rolls, a bit firm … with only a few sunflower seeds from amazing, selfish dim-wits. I mean really, why spit shells on greens and tee boxes … bring a cup. Bunkers had great sand only marred by clientele who chose not to use a rake.

The Bottom-Line

Great experience here at Pechanga (minus the casino which I avoided) and would come again for sure … if you’ve not played here it’s one to add to the list. I’m glad I did.

Playing Conditions 9.16 IMMACULATE
Playing Conditions 9.16 IMMACULATE

I started my New Year’s Day here. I had a 8 A.M. tee time, but had a frost delay for about 30 min., after the delay was lifted, we where given the opportunity to go to the range and practice area. They have one of the best short game and practice area, that I’ve used.

Now to the game. The tee boxes have been one of the best I have played on in a long time. They are large firm and flat, with minimal, to not damage. The fairways are large and spacious, not too many trees to hit into. But there are so gorgeous and majestic views from some of the back 9 tee locations, so there are forced carry to reach the fairways. It is a must to play the proper tee locations, I played white, which was good for me. The fairways are firm flat and have some lushness to it. The rough was cut down, so it was easy to play through those lies.
The bunkers are placed on many of the holes, which adds to the beauty of this course. The sand was a bit firm, not fluffy, but playable. The greens rolled really fast, I mean really fast, but true. the greens also have some angulation, you need to read before striking your putt. If you are above the hole, be careful, because a miss 1st put may give you and additional 2 or 3 putts to finish. I saw more putts, barely tapped, run 8-10 feet passed, because of the angulation. A couple of hole had pin placements right on the edge of the slope.
Overall the course is in super condition, it has great views and character throughout the layout of the track. It should be a must play for your Bucket List for 2018.
