Made it up to Monterey this past weekend to play Spyglass and Pebble as part of a birthday trip.  The centennial package they were offering for their 100th anniversary sealed the deal. Started off the first day with Spyglass, which in general I’ve heard is the superior and tougher track. The clubhouse and grill are very small, don’t expect any amenities here like at the lodge, just golf. Staying on property, I grabbed the shuttle here and I don’t think it really mattered to them either day that I checked in at the front desk. They just said to grab a bag of balls and the range was a few steps down the way, see the starter about 15 minutes before my time. Range that day was artificial turf.

The Review

Golf Playing Conditions 9.29 IMMACULATE

Course conditions were excellent.  One of the best I’ve played. The tee boxes were in excellent condition, mown down perfectly and flat. Fairways were more lush, just a few divots here and there but excellent and carpet like. I played at 830am, so it was still moist and got little roll off drives. Many uneven lies in the fairway, so a good drive was not always rewarded well. Rough was thick and lush, grabbed your club so you would be lucky to get a mid iron out, even a hybrid was dicey. If you could find your ball sitting down there in the first place. I was only in 1 or 2 bunkers, this course really isn’t bunkered that heavily. sand was soft, white, and excellent to hit out of. The greens though. running fast and with tricky contours, I had a tough time lagging my putts anywhere near the hole. It felt like if your approach wasn’t close, it was a 3 putt.

The course itself was indeed tough, starting with the 5 ‘ocean’ holes, of which I found #2 (fairway) and #4 (green) kind of gimmicky but still enjoyed the spectacular views. The sand dunes and the structures stand in stark contrast to Pebble’s ocean holes which are perched directly on the cliffs of the peninsula. If you like true parkland courses though, you will love the rest of Spyglass Hill. Running in and out of the Del Monte forest, each subsequent hole is framed by Monterey pines and generally isolated from structures or road. Hit the ball straight and take an extra club into the green seems to be par for most of this course. And par will be a good score on any hole here as there are challenging doglegs. Strategically placed trees and water, and greens that can punish even the best hit approach shots.

Only nitpick was that I felt the par 3s to be a bit of a weakness here, as they felt particularly less challenging compared to the rest of the course. all four play short, 3 of them severely downhill (though #3 is an awesome hole). the two on the back 9 felt like mirror images of one another and felt like an afterthought. Nothing like #5 or #17 at pebble.

My Thoughts

Though many say this is a superior course to Pebble and it probably is, as a recreational golfer I would rather play Pebble again. After my round at Spyglass, I felt exhausted as if I had been through a battle. Had to manage the rough when my drive went astray, or a long uphill approach, and then had to handle the quick, undulating greens. Shot about 12 or 13 shots above my usual round. I will make it back again, for sure, perhaps when my game is worthy of the test of golf that is course is.

I have been to Monterey plenty of times & played many of the other offerings on the peninsula, but I have only been to Pebble Beach once – during the 2000 US Open. I remember rolling up to Pebble thinking I wouldn’t ever consider paying $500 to play any golf course & after walking the course, I would pay 4x that amount. The place is simply stunning.

Smash cut to 18 years later – I won a free round at Pebble Beach in my Golf Group’s Annual Member-Guest tourney in March of this year, so finally had a chance to play it on 11/10. First off the tee at 6:40am & our 4-some was set up with a caddie for each person. Just an amazing morning – zero wind, about 60 degrees & climbing and no fog. There was definitely smoke from the fires up in Northern California, however the air quality was okay.

The Review

Being first off, we set the pace at around 3:45. We were about 2-holes ahead of the next group throughout the round. They are hosting the Taylormade Invitational this week, so the conditions were immaculate: from the tee boxes to the greens & everything in between. Soup to nuts, a solid 9.5. Caddies were really knowledgeable & fun. We finished our round with the obligatory lunch & drinks in the Taproom & it is everything it’s cracked up to be & more. The food & service were outstanding & the ambiance is second to none. Just an amazing, Bucket-List Day!

Played Spanish Bay on Monday January 30th as part of the Northern California Golf Association (NCGA) Winter special.
It was me and my best friend, just the two of us and we walked it with our push carts. While carts were included you should know that Pebble, Spyglass and Spanish Bay are cart path only. We figured you do just as much walking with a cart so why not just walk. Spanish bay allows pull/push carts Pebble does not and I’m not sure about Spyglass.  Please call ahead.  One other thing you should know is they don’t have a range. Plan to visit Spyglass or Pebble to hit balls first.  It’s not far and it is included with our package. At Spanish Bay they do have a nice putting green and a small chipping area right behind the Pro-shop and next to the first tee.
The first hole takes your breathe away. Par 5 that runs right along the coastline and your approach to the green is looking right out to the pacific. Many of the holes are along the ocean. Some run towards it some run away while others and like the first some are parallel. The back nine has a few more holes the are back in the forest but in my honest opinion they are all wonderful.
Be careful on #11 the top hat hole. You can put up a big number around that green. Number 14 is a great par 5 downhill with nothing but ocean behind. I’ll spare you the hole by hole description but I absolutely loved the course. Some people complain about blind tee shots, but I had a yardage guide and it gave me enough information to get around in 75 — Just saying.  Do get a yardage guide for$10 or have a good Skycaddie.
The greens were immaculate and not overly fast. They rolled very true and the ocean didn’t influence the putts as I thought it would. Glad I asked the starter. Read them right and you’ll be fine. Two groups behind us was LT. Didn’t meet him but it added a little excitement. The NCGA special was $175 and they give you a gift card for $75 to spend at the resort. In my opinion well worth it and I’ll be back next year. In fact with the special you can play Spyglass and Spanish bay for the price of Pebble — Again, just saying.

Played 1-28-17. What a great day for golf in Monterrey.  It was 65F, clear skies and hardly a breath of wind — Not bad for a little walk in the park.
The course is everything you would expect it to be. Tee boxes level, lush and cut tight. Fairways were in great shape without a blemish. Rough was a little thick and about 2-3 inches and in great shape. Bunkers were close to perfect, just real nice to hit from. Greens were in great shape smooth, semi-soft and rolling true.
This course just has great view after great view. I would highly recommend getting a caddie.  It would just make the day a little more special. I strongly suggest if you are going to spend the money, go all out.

Golfing Healthy – 6 Tips For Healthy Travels

Golfing Healthy with Cate Ritter

TheLEAN18green - Cate''s Nutrition KitchenTheLEAN18green - Cate''s Nutrition KitchenWhether you’re traveling for a golf tournament, a business meeting or a family vacation, it can be challenging to find convenient food options that keep you energized and satisfied. Although you’re not likely to find a “par-fect” plate of grass-fed steak, baked sweet potato fries, GMO-free ketchup and a side of organic steamed kale, you can still make better choices that are healthy and delicious. Eating more nutritious foods will help improve your energy, reduce stress and set you up for a restful night’s sleep — all challenges for a golfer living on-the-go. By following the simple tips below you improve your daily performance on and off the course.

  1. Stay Hydrated
Stay Hydrated with a little lemon in your water
Stay Hydrated with a little lemon in your water

Stick with water as your main beverage. Not only does water support your body, it also prevents you from drinking beverages high in refined sugars, artificial sweeteners and other toxic ingredients. Sparkling water and unsweetened teas are also healthy options. Add lemon wedges, sliced cucumber or flavored stevia for variety.

  1. Plan Ahead
Search for grocery stores near your destination for a healthier meal or to stock up on supplies. Research restaurant menus ahead of time to create a meal from the healthier selections. Try combining sides or appetizers, such as two eggs with a side of bacon and a cup of fruit.
  1. Protein First
Increase metabolism and decrease appetite by eating protein first. Next, enjoy plenty of non-starchy vegetables with a small amount of natural fat. Lastly, enjoy non-starchy veggies, grains, beans, legumes, and fruits at the end of your meal. Eating foods in this order helps stabilize blood sugar, increase satiation and prevent overeating. For example, you’re much less likely to gorge on a giant potato after you’ve finished a grilled steak with asparagus and butter.
  1. Include Veggies
Add vegetables to your meal to increase nutrients with fiber, vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and antioxidants. The more veggies (spinach, broccoli, asparagus) on your plate, the less room you’ll have for insulin-spiking refined carbs (bread, white rice, pasta or chips). Boost nutrients with greens instead of grains by choosing salads and lettuce wraps. If you can’t resist bread, select sourdough or “sprouted” varieties and make it a half sandwich.
  1. Learn to Lemonize
Add freshly squeezed lemon juice to water, tea, salads, chicken, fish, and vegetables for extra flavor. Lemons support weight loss, improve digestion, aid detoxification, and provide a decent amount of vitamin C and potassium.
  1. Eat Slowly
When you improvehow you eat, you’ll naturally improve what you eat. Start by being mindful of your first three bites and practice putting utensils down between bites. It’s this combination of awareness and small changes that produce the most effective results.

On-The-Go Examples

Airport breakfast: cheese omelet with spinach, mushrooms, tomato; side of fruit
Road trip cooler: beef/bison jerky, sliced bell pepper, walnuts and a banana.
Grocery grab: rotisserie chicken with cherry tomatoes, guacamole, and an apple.
Drive-thru: lettuce-wrapped double burger with tomato, pickles, and onions.
