Golf Playing Conditions 7.17 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.17 GREAT

Haven’t played here in a long time but finally did yesterday. We had a 7:30 time and got off right on time. There are MANY memorable holes at OAK QUARRY and it is easy to get a big number on them if you lose focus. Conditions are excellent right now the the best being the greens. The rolled real smooth and were about 10-11 on the meter. Everything is in top condition with the exception of the bunkers. They were inconstant and could use some more sand. We finished in 4 hours and hated to see our round end.

I can see the point of the last reviewer, there was only one person working in the pro shop and he was checking everyone in, taking payments, scooping range balls, and serving coffee etc. I could easily see how things could get behind as the day goes on. My only problem with the course would be the yardage markers or lack of them. I could not find any yardages on the sprinkler heads and the GPS on the carts were removed. With all the elevation changes here it would be nice to know the correct distance. I did have a scope but often it could not pick up the flag-stick for some reason.

Highly recommend playing here and the senior rate was $65

Played GK cup 15 match here with t8fish. My first time here, holy cow! Now I know why he recommended this track! Will definitely treat myself to more Oak Quarry in the future.

There were limited carts today, averaging 20-30min delays to the midday slots. The carts have really good GPS, a must need for better shot planning here. Winter in SoCal is still here, but Oak Quarry is fairing well overall. Tee boxes are healthy. Fairways are consistent and run out is incredible on some holes, downright dangerous on others if you don’t keep this in mind.

Thank goodness the rough is well maintained and thriving right now. It is kept short enough to not be penal itself, but just long enough to be your friend…a good friend!
AARG(areas around greens) are also well maintained, making good lies and confidence with your weapons(wedges).

Bunkers are just like what my buddy t8fish stated earlier, I found two fairway bunkers that day and they were on the thinner side.

Greens were mostly matching the overall speed and break of the two practice greens(lower more than the upper), so spend some quality pre-round time here and your lag putting will thrive. They are winter firm but still able to hold most of what you will rain down on them.

A visually stunning layout, but even better, it is stimulating to the real golf tactician in you. High value.

You have a golf trek planned through SoCal? Seriously consider this on your agenda…better than Disnyland. Recommended.

Golf Playing Conditions 6.87 GOOD

Played with 11 other GK Gurus (please contact me at golf@greenskeeper.org or message here on GK to learn more) at Oak Quarry yesterday (2/12). Postcard weather day in Southern California.

The main purpose of a GK Guru visit with a golf course is to help spread the word of current very good/great playing conditions. Typically Oak Quarry being predominately a summer turf course plays its best in May, June and July. Well they have the golf course dialed in beautifully right now for February which is impressive. Come March they will aerate the greens and during Late March through April depending on how warm it is there will be a turf transition where the green rye grass gives way to the warm weather grasses. Long story short, get out there and play Oak Quarry this month!

The Review

Greens are as expected firm for this time of year, smooth and excellent speed. Fairways are dormant Bermuda with full coverage, firm for lots of roll and plenty of padding under the ball to compress shots. Rough mostly lush, not too penalizing and beautiful contrast to the fairways. Tee boxes are in good shape, mostly level, well cared for. Bunkers are a mixed bag. I was in a lot of them (which is not good if you want to score well there). The fairways bunkers are very firm, with some occasional scattered small rocks here in there you want to pick away from you ball, however I much prefer fairway bunkers like that than too much sand. Makes them easy to escape from. On the flip side the green side bunkers had decent sand and featured very steep faces. It took me a couple shots at times to escape them. They are well positioned so to avoid them during your round is quite an accomplishment. Bring your high lob sand game.

The layout at Oak Quarry can be best summed up as a bold statement. The unique visuals and setting set the golf course apart. It is a bucket list golf course for every golfer in Southern California. Extremely challenging, especially if the wind kicks up and loaded with scenic fun holes.

During the whole experience the customer services was excellent. Friendly professional staff.

Highly Recommend.

BTW – fresh photos coming soon.

Despite this course being relatively close to home we have never played here mainly due to folks over the years telling us it wasn’t worth our time. After sneaking in a morning round, I’m annoyed we’ve never tried this track. Lots of positives, nice smooth if smallish greens, fairways in decent shape. Great value at $27 which includes lunch or breakfast for the price.

Old school flat and very walk-able course. Tee boxes are probably the worst feature as they are all chewed up and not very level at times. Play was a little slow-ish due to the 5 some of regulars we were behind, but not too bad. Not the most challenging course, but sometimes you need to play a simple straight forward course to tighten up the screws in your game. Not going to be on the regular rotation but we’ll be back.

Decided to head out to Pechanga for a little golf and gambling. We bought the Underpar deal which includes 2 people for $200 and a bounce back certificate. I kinda knew in the back of my head that there would be a frost delay due to the very cold overnight temperatures. Right when we walked in at 7:30 there was a sign stating that there was indeed a frost delay. The clubhouse staff let us know that we had about an hour or so before they could open the range. We decided to eat at the restaurant and the breakfast was spectacular. About thirty minutes after arriving the staff came around and let everyone know that they were going to start teeing off in 10 minuets. The only issue we had was instead of a shotgun they just teed off in order so we still ended up teeing off 1 hour after our tee time.

The Review

Course is in fantastic shape right with the exception of some Ground Under Repair (GUR) on 2,7,16,18 which are Cart Path Only (CPO) they looked to have suffered some storm damage and they had laid new Sod down already. Other than those minor issues all fairways were near perfect with consistent roll and fluffy lies. The Rough was very nasty which makes for 3 rounds in a row where balls were easily lost in the 3-5 inch rough, I will have nightmares about this for weeks. Greens were running about a 12 on the scale and were mostly firm. The par three’s seemed to be little softer than others which was a good thing. Tee’s need to be moved but they all were well spaced and provided a level hitting surface. I did notice that each hole had 2-3 Super Lush tee boxes that maybe they are using for a tournament. These boxes were twice as nice as what they were using so it was a little confusing. I was not in any sand but per my playing partners it was fantastic.

Overall this place is a lot of fun and usually has fantastic conditions. Staff is super friendly even with the craziness of a frost delay and 5hr Pace of Play (POP.) I will gladly come back anytime. Even if you pay rack rate I think its still worth it.

Played Oak Quarry (OQ) with my brother at 8:52am on Friday, 11/23/18, after recovering from Turkey Day. Weather was overcast and cool after the rain on Wednesday night, and overall the course was pretty wet after coming out of over-seeding November 1st. The look is clean and trimmed, but Oak Quarry is not in fighting trim yet as greens are still pretty fuzzy, although with a firm base. They rolled only at medium-slow speed and were bumpy, and the fuzzy grass caused putts to wiggle left and right. Fairway lies were OK but could sit down. Rough ranged from thin to very juicy. Traps were damp, with fairway traps being thin and firm, and green-side having only slightly better material. All traps had lots of small rocks. Tees were OK.

No cart girl, but snack shack was open. The course should put a divot mix refill rack out by the snack shack. Many of the par 3/par 4 tees were set forward one tee box or more (we played Blue), shortening the course card by hundreds of yards.

Golf Playing Conditions 7.20 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.20 GREAT

Played Thursday 6/28, first out at 0630. It’s been awhile since I’ve played here but after missing the GK Guru Visit and reading all the positive reviews I decided it was time for a visit. Used a Groupon promotion, 2 player special for $79. My opinion it’s a good deal.

Customer service was outstanding during check in. Only negative was the driving range is closed for upgrades and only a small putting greens is available for a warm up. Played as a twosome with my brother and was paired up with another twosome. Pace of Play (POP) was right at 4 hrs. Men’s Club had a shotgun gun start at 0730 starting at holes 11-18. They were never an issue. Marshall and cart girl made their rounds and even a visit from the pro shop just checking to make sure we had no issue and enjoying our round.

The course was in very good condition from tee box to greens, rough and bunkers very well maintained. Only a few thin lies and brown patches. Nothing that impacted play.  No negative conditions. Personally I still like the back nine better. The par 3s are a formidable challenge and don’t forget the picturesque Hole 18.

If you haven’t been there in awhile, maybe it’s worth a visit. I think you’ll enjoy it.

Played here Monday 4/2/18. Got paired up with 3 other guys who all were friendly. Pace of play was 4 hours for us.

Course is in great shape. Very green and clean. I didn’t see many dead spots at all and everything looked to be watered. I fixed all divots and scuffs on the fairway to keep them looking amazing.

Staff was friendly and I always love playing this course! I paid $50 but would have paid $75 for this.
