Golf Playing Conditions 7.43 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.43 GREAT

Played this morning at 6:50 with three other friends. Goose is one of my favorite courses but was wondering how it would play after the last two days of rain. All considering, the course drains out pretty well.

There was some water in the bunkers, but moved my ball a club length.  In the two bunkers I was in shots had a little too much bounce with my wedge on the wet sand. I bogeyed both holes. Not their fault, mine. They let us us drive the carts on the fairways so, apparently they didn’t think it was that wet. Greens were great considering winter conditions right now.
We played in under four hours. The course is a ways from my stomping grounds, but always a joy to play.

Golf Playing Conditions 6.49 GOOD

Played 12-28-17 walking for $22, teeing off at 6:40 and finishing at 9:30 as a threesome. Greens for the most part were in good shape, some had some issues around the edges but most rolled pretty smooth with medium/fast speed. They were a little firmer on the back side but still held good shots. Fairways were starting to look a little thin but there were still decent lies. Rough was not to long with a few bare areas. Didn’t go into any bunkers but from watching playing partners some seemed to be a little thin while others seemed to have an ample amount of sand. Tee boxes were okay, some being lush while others were thin. Winter conditions seem to be setting in, but overall course is still in descent shape.

Golf Playing Conditions 6.75 GOOD
Golf Playing Conditions 6.75 GOOD

The course recently re-opened after a renovation. I never played the old course previously called “Desert Rose” but several in our group had and give the new course rave reviews in comparison. This course in a Links Styled track, with undulating greens and tiers. There is a flood control drainage ditch which runs thru the entire course from hole 1 – 18. The “ditch” runs along the right side of every hole. off the tee, many holes appear to have quite narrow landing area in the fairway.

One of the guys in my group hit a straight as a string drive off the tee on 7 which landed in the middle of the fairway. We watched his ball roll to the right , off the fairway and down to “the ditch”. Therefore the tip of all tips for this course. DO NOT GO RIGHT! Even if your ball doesn’t find the actual water , the 4 inch rough and severe slope will create an awkward lie with the ball well below or above your feet on a drastic angle. A resident golfer here told me ” You have to remember they designed it as a flood control basin FIRST and golf course SECOND.” Which means the entire course slopes toward the drainage ditch. The ruff that borders the right side of the fairways is probably 3-5 inches thick in spots . Surely an effort designed to help balls stay on the course and out of “the ditch.”

Additional Thoughts

There are a couple of what I call ‘goofy’ or cartoon holes but all in all, the course was in fantastic shape. The guys in our group all said they had never seen the greens in such great shape. They were FAST ! And like many links courses, the greens were a formidable defense if you were out of position. I’m not a huge fan of links courses but I rather enjoyed this track once I realized that a 3 iron off the tee on most holes was sufficient to leave about a 150 yard 2nd. Great Value ! $25 round and that came with a $10 voucher for lunch afterward!

Played black golf today 1/6/18. Rate was 89$. Staff was very friendly. 8:41 tee, Pace of Play (PoP) was almost 5 hr. The group in front of us was real slow and not playing ready golf. The scenery was great. Golf carts had GPS and the nice leather plush seats.
The best part about the course were the greens, and around them. They were real tricky and broke all around the holes . They were real fast in the morning and slowed down in the back 9.The rough was rough. Reminded me of hidden valleys rough. It was still good to hit out of. The bunker I was in was great. The fairways were about a 5 out of 10. The layout was great! After reading reviews I brought some extra balls but only lost two and found about 8!!. The rates are lower if your’e a resident.  Range balls are $ 4, 8, and 12, hoped they were included in the round but were not.  Expected better conditions. The restaurant had good food at a good price. Restaurant staff was great.

A word to the wise, if you like roller-coasters this might be the right course for you. I’m not a fan of roller-coasters or courses that make a difficult game much more difficult. Black Gold has very friendly service and facilities and is well maintained. But this is a case of not having the right earth to put a golf course on. This one is laid over some rough, hilly terrain. This leads to some fairly extreme elevation changes and lots of blind shots. In addition, the architect seemed afraid of giving any impression of ease so even if you negotiate the many humps and dips and never-level lies, they have pot bunkers and barranca waiting for you. Once you make it to the green your trivails are not over. These quick, immaculate greens have plenty of slope and run-off to take a light-touch putt right off the green. The course is constantly scenic, with great expansive views—but you are also often playing down canyons of houses which adds a little anxiety to a wayward drive. Locals, who have played the course many times will be much more comfortable. But if this is your first time, bring extra balls and prepare to be punished. ALSO—note the slope ratings. You may often play Blue tees. The Whites are sloped at 125 here—and I’m not sure if that is accurate (should be a 2-3 points higher IMO). Play the Whites. If you normally play Whites, play the Gold. Don’t kid yourself. The course won’t.

What can you say about this course that hasn’t already been said? Just a fun and fantastic course to play. It was in all around great shape. Fairways lush. Not much roll but great. greens receptive, ran medium fast to fast and true. Was in a lot of traps and they were all great. If you are anywhere near here you have to play this course!

They now have a phone app that has a overhead view& yardage. The carts have GPS and seem to be accurate. The app has a nice feature to see the layout for first time players. The golf carts also have USB charging ports.

This is a spectacular golf track. It may seem like a bit of a drive from the bay area at first but you will see its not that far (just about 30 miles north of Highway 80 near Davis) and it is well worth it.
It is one of the most visually beautiful and best maintained courses in all of Northern California. I’ve had the good fortune to play the most iconic venues in the area including Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill, Pasatiempo, and others. And I can say this course stands up to all of those in terms of the layout, the conditions and the enjoyability of playing it. And the staff and hospitality are tremendous.
This course is flat out one of my favorites and all of Northern California and I highly recommend it.

Why Did We Expand the Regions?

It’s simple.  Greenskeeper.org has been growing.  We expanded the number of regions because golfers like you have reported about golf course conditions in more places you play.  In short golfers come to us if they want informative, relevant golf course reviews and it’s all due to your, our GK Community’s, diligence.  You let us know your experiences and well if we hear about it everyone else does too.

Why so Many Regions?

Golf is an experience and every experience is unique.  Different golf courses offer different experiences.  What we look for in golf course reviews offers a little insight into every golf course we play.  Not just one point of view but many, and by providing many different points of view you get a clearer picture of what each golf course has to offer.  To that end we felt it necessary to provide regions with their own highlighted golf course.  Local players can enjoy the fact there is a great facility they can play just around their corner.  Golfers looking to experience new golf courses can play these and experience first-hand these unique golf experiences. Put simply, we allow not just your high-end. daily fee courses to shine but the local municipal as well.  They all deserve a fair shot and they all deserve to shine.

Look for additional Golf Course highlights from our Worth the Green Fee for 2016.

Was joined by rgm2525 and dangerousbri for my second round of golf on Wednesday in Vegas. I heard the conditions were good but did not expect them as nice as we encountered for a municipal course.
On the 6th hole I noticed a course staffer with his small dog (lola) roll up on us and stop to chat. Turns out it was the Superintendent Scott Sutton. I came to learn the entire course, even the greens, with exception to some bermuda turf lining the wash that runs through the course, is all paspalum. Paspalum is the super lush turf some of you may have experienced at Olivas Links or Buenaventura recently. It’s very salt and heat resistant plus provides a beautiful playing surface through the green. What I did not realize was how nice paspalum can also be for a putting surface as well. It’s easy at first when playing a paspalum green to mistake it for bermuda grass (as we did) but when you come to realize everything putts true and there is NO grain to decipher when reading putts, you are pleasantly surprised. The greens ran slower than they looked but we were told this was only because Scott had his crew double verticut the greens that day.
In regards to the rest of the conditions they are completely lush fairways, tees and rough. Good quality sand in the bunkers although there are stools (base roots of paspalum) invading the edges of the bunkers. As far as layout, it’s a very straight forward, flat, no frills, conducive to quick pace of play, relaxing course. It’s surrounded by a local lower income neighborhood with houses on most holes left and the wash on the right. It has a beautiful small clubhouse, excellent service and facilities.
Given its exceptional conditions, pace of play and affordability I highly recommend this course to anyone looking for a great deal and relaxing round of golf.

Played here in the morning of Tuesday, 6/14 with sixpez. It was sort of a preview round in advance of the course’s July 1 opening. The conditions are very nice and definitely look ready for opening day. The greens were very smooth, somewhat firm and rolling medium/medium fast. Fairways are good except for a few rare spots that have seem to be having trouble growing in. The rough was pretty good condition but not too penal. A little longer rough along the edge of the wash might be preferred to help balls stay out of the hazard. Tee boxes were good. Bunkers were excellent.

Layout-wise, this is the type of course that seems so easy yet it’s actually somewhat difficult, especially if you have trouble hitting the ball straight. Nearly every hole has the wash on the right, and many have OB left, so those elements factor into every shot. The course looks wide open, but because the fairways are elevated well above the wash, you can’t really let the ball leak right much at all, or it tumbles down the hill into the wash. There’s not much visual definition on the course, so again it appears more wide open than it plays.

We’ve waited all year for the results, and the results are finally in.  Greenskeeper.org proudly presents it’s 2016 Worth the Green Fee Awards for Southern California.

Worth the Green Fee” is awarded to golf courses open to the public listed on Greenskeeper.org that stand out above the rest with our site users at providing a consistent, quality golf experience at an outstanding price.

Let’s face it, golf can be expensive.  But it doesn’t have to be.  All you have to know is where to play to get your best value and that’s something Greenskeeper.org excels.  In addition to helping golfers decide where to play their next round of golf based on reviews, ratings, and maintenance alerts, we’ve recently introduced our GK Coupons service to extend their deals directly to our avid golfers. Our GK Coupons  program has been received very well by both Golf Course Operator and Golfer.

Finally got out to play this highly regarded and suggested course. WOW! Easily in my personal top 3 public course I have ever played. from a course condition, it probably is in the top 2.
We have seen the Golfweek note saying Rams Hill is the 3rd best public course in California behind only Pebble and Spyglass, well we have played both of those within the last year, and course condition-wise, it is FAR superior to Pebble.  Put things into perspective, there are so many reviews already, I can only say as a first timer I was blown away.
Tee to green there is simply nothing out of place. This course is a MUST play.  Suck it up and make the drive.  For me from Lake Forest it took us 2 hours and 35 mins. to get there and it is a really nice drive to just chill out and enjoy. I would rate this in the 9.8 to 9.9 area….only reason not to give a 10 was “lack of GPS” and “no mayo on the club sandwich.”
Hey Golf Digest – this course absolutely deserves to be in the Top 100 US public courses list for 2017 and TOP course list in California.

Okay call me crazy, I have heard all the great things said about Rams Hill so I thought I would decide for myself. I made the 3 hour drive with 2 others yesterday in pouring rain to play here.
The weather reported that the rain would be light and would stop at 9:45 am so I made a 10:20 tee time. We arrived at 9:45 and the rain stopped at 10:10.
This place is golf heaven in the desert! Conditions were near perfect other than the winds that picked up on the back nine. Greens were 10-11 speed, tee boxes immaculate, fairways perfect, sand was great, and the course is a real gem. We bought the $150 twosome special and they charged our 3rd only $80 which was great. The round came with $15 credit vouchers for food so we stayed for lunch before driving home. It was a long day but was a real joy for us all.
Thanks to all the GK’ers for the spot on reviews.  We will be back soon!
