I made the quick trip south on the 15 to join the GK gurus at Goose Creek, following SCGA Mid Am qualifier. I arrived early and took advantage of a decent lunch menu while watching the players play 18 from the clubhouse patio. They also have a nice beer selection, including a great red ale from Fullerton’s Bootlegger’s Brewery.

I haven’t played Goose Creek in 6 years and could not remember much except how gloomy it was for both my morning rounds. The course just pops with sunny clear skies, green forever. They have a large grass driving range and huge practice green, with the same undulations you’ll see on the course.

Course was in phenomenal shape. The white tee boxes were all level with no damage. Fairways were like carpet, with one showing damage and marked off as Ground Under Repair (GUR). The rough was gradual with it getting deeper the farther you were away from the fairway. I found one green side bunker and the sand was “medium heavy.” The greens were just awesome and probably the fastest I’ve played on. They were firm and glassy smooth, but high shots did check and leave a mark.

ALERT:Aeration
Will be aerating the greens 4/1 & 4/2.

I always look forward to playing Goat Hill. The price is right, never have an issue getting out early, staff is accommodating, and the course is just flat out fun to play, albeit a bit frustrating at times. You can hit some shots which appear to be great, and find yourself in an impossible situation to get the ball up and down to save par.

The prior reviews from the GK family were spot on, so not much to add relative to condition. I really was surprised the course was as playable given all the recent rains. Having new carts is a real positive. This is one of the few courses I take a cart, because it is just so much easier, which is crazy considering the yardage on this course.

I highly recommend to anyone who has not yet played here to give it a shot. You’ll either love it or hate – no middle ground

So what does one do, after playing the Babe in 2:15? Go play the Ike in 3:30.

The course is in great shape.

Fairways seem to be drier than the Babe? So decent roll and good lies. Tee boxes are all in great shape. No traps but they were all clean and heard no complaints. Rough is high and difficult at present. Greens are in great shape on every hole ( chip/putt very true). No issues with customer service, as it was excellent. Great day of golf, when you can play both of these great courses, in the same day.

Rode the Blues (5827/67.3/120) in 4H, 5M mid morning using Forelinx. Matched up with C.D., Al and Roger, very nice group to play with. Around 70, clear and breezy, very comfortable golf weather.

This course would be easy to walk, very flat and most tees are close to the last green. Typical old school desert layout.

The tees were lush and maintained long with few unfixed divots.

The fairways were mostly lush and good to play from.

The rough was lush and thick even if not tall. Good POP rough and nice to chip from.

The traps were well maintained with thick sand. A few had sprinkler runoff challenges.

The small greens putted medium fast speed and were firm. A couple had some bad patches around the perimeter.

The customer service is always excellent here. No Drink cart today. No GPS on the basic carts that are nice. Reasonably priced grill onsite. Complimentary range balls on an all grass range that tops out at about 220 yards. Fun course, the staff is very friendly and I frequently get matched up with nice seniors to play with. Recommended.

Course has improved since my last time Feb 26.

Fairways have begun to dry out (not all of them, 2 still Cart Path Only (CPO) and provide more roll. Grass is growing and the lies in the fairways are much better. In 2 traps and no issues with playing out. Rough has grown up in areas outside of fairways, so it is more difficult than before. Tee boxes were clean and no issues. Greens are just great. They chip/putt great, hold shots and have very good speed.

Customer service excellent at all levels. For $40 this is a really great deal. Ends April 19.

Played today as part of the GK Guru group. Really enjoyed playing with Vince, Jerry and Gary. A nice mix of golf games. Vince had a handful of birdies and a great day putting, so that was great to witness as well. The rest of us each got one, I believe. Some very good shots made, and what a good time!

Last off of the Gurus, I think our POP was just about 4hrs, maybe just a few mins more, but was a good pace overall.

The Review

Golf Playing Conditions 7.47 GREAT

Received word from Ross Fisher that the greens were very firm and not holding shots very well. That indeed was the case – they were very fast, but did putt very nicely/smooth. Best approach was to guess about a club less than the yardage. Did have at least 4 balls roll off the back after landing on the greens.

Tees, fairways and rough were probably the best overall I’ve seen this year. Got mud a few times on the ball, but fairways were really nice, firm, good lies, and no mushy areas whatsoever. Was in one green-side bunker, and sand was fluffy.

Might try to get back out before aeration in a few weeks time. Thanks to Johnny and Ross Fisher for setting up the great day for us!

Golf Course Review Carmel Valley Ranch Resort Carmel California

Carmel Valley Ranch Resort

Golf Course Review Carmel Valley Ranch Resort Carmel California

During last weeks round at Quail the topic of Carmel Valley Ranch (CVR) came up. I realized I hadn’t played it in several months so I headed out there today for a round in the SUN! It was still cart path only due to rain most of the week last week and this weekend.

Quail and Carmel Valley Ranch are very similar in that they are both high end resort courses with prime tee times going to private members then guests and finally a handful to the public.

Since it looks like I’ve done the last few reviews at CVR, I’ll do a head to head comparison between Quail and Carmel Valley Ranch as they are both inland on the Monterey Peninsula and only a few miles a part.

The Review

Golf Playing Conditions 8.08 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 8.08 GREAT

Conditions are great at both courses, but Quail gets the nod. Whereas CVR is an 8-9 overall, Quail is a 9.5-10. Greens at Quail are more tame as CVR greens all have several sublte undulations. In a way it makes them harder to read than a place like Spanish Bay or Blackhorse which have several severe undulations throughout.

Fairway conditions again goes to Quail just because the fairways there seem to drain better. I had a few drives plug in the fairway upon landing at CVR.

Tee box prize goes to CVR. Easily a 9.5 to Quail’s 9. Sand trap is hands down Quail. The only reason I didn’t rate Quail’s blunkers a 10 is because I played Spanish right after two days in a row and those bunkers definitely were a 10!

Carmel Valley Ranch also gets the nod for better layout. In addition to the 6 holes up in the mountainside which have some fun elevation changes, CVR does a fantastic job with water features on the flat holes.

Parting Thoughts

Customer service award goes to Quail without a doubt. Customer service is good at CVR but Quail has the best CS north of San Diego. Aviara is the only other course/resort that matches (and maybe even exceeds) Quail when it comes to Customer Service.

Both CVR and Quail offer full grass driving ranges with range balls includes with green fees. Both have GPS on the carts and a quality restaurant/bar.

One other thing to mention about the course. CVR is a par 70 with only two par 5’s. The Par 3 holes range from a short 110 yards to 200+ and seem to be evenly spaced in distances between the four par 3’s.

Both courses are highly recommended and definitely worth a visit while here in the Monterey Peninsula. Especially during the summer when the Pebble courses are fogged in. CVR and Quail will be 20 degrees warmer.
