Note from JohnnyGK:

Come out to Greenskeeper.org’s 20th Year Birthday Party/Golf!

Hosted at our GK Plays amazing sponsor Linksoul’s course… “The Goat” – Goat Hill Park Golf Course.

Every year since reopening the course and facilities get better and better. The course is in its best shape for their main annual event The Wishbone Brawl. This year it’s on November 19th featuring pros Charely Hoffman, Xander Schauffele, Dean Willson and JohnnyGK … I mean Chris Riley. We’ll be playing just 15 days after that so expect great conditions on this very challenging fun short track.

At GK’s big 10th birthday we did a bonanza of closest-to-the-pin contests. Sticking with tradition all eight par 3’s at The Goat will be prize holes! Plus we’ll be doing a long drive contest on the par 5, #15. Half the holes, prize holes, not bad!

Party it up on Goat Hill’s Lud’s patio-bar. Music, fire pit, hot dogs (veggie available), chips, non-alcoholic drinks for all players. Beers and other drinks available for purchase. As always we’ll have a big raffle where everyone wins a fantastic prize sponsored by Linksoul, Golf Moose, OnCore Golf Balls or donated by GKers. Pluse a putting contest and some surprises!

Wow, 20 years, looking very forward to this. Love our GK Community.

Thank You
Johnny

BREAKING: GreensKeeper.org Announces WORTH THE GREEN FEE Awards 2021

Worth the Green Fee Honors for 2021 from GreensKeeper.org

Worth the Green Fee Winners for 2021 from GreensKeeper.orgBest Playing Conditions Winners for 2021 wouldn’t be complete without the Worth the Green Fee honors as well.  So GreensKeeper.org presents its Worth the Green Fee Honors for 2021.

Worth the Green Fee” is award to the golf courses open to the public listed on GreensKeeper.org that stand out above the rest with our site users at providing a consistent, quality golf experience at an outstanding price.

Let’s face it, golf can be VERY expensive, especially post Covid-19.  Thankfully for us, it doesn’t have to be.  All you have to know is where to play to get your best value and that’s something GreensKeeper.org excels.  In addition to helping golfers decide where to play their next round of golf based on reviews, ratings, and maintenance alerts, we’ve recently revamped our GK Coupons, GK Plays and GK Guru Visits.  Stay tuned for more chances to play some spectacular golf with our GK Golf Club or our USGA sanctioned SCGA GK Golf Club.

How Award Winners Are Determined

Golf Course Reviews and ratings submitted by our 76,000+ GreensKeeper.org community are tabulated over 12 months.  Winners are determined for each area.

This year we divide awards into 11 Regions —  San Diego County, Orange County, Los Angeles County, Inland Empire, Santa Barbara County, Palm Springs Region, and Ventura County with Regional Winners for Southern Nevada, Southern California, Central California, and Northern California.

We provide the list below in no particular order.  This is done on purpose.  Any golf course that provides outstanding conditions in their region should not overshadow other golf courses simply because of their location.  For most avid golfers, the playing experience is what matters.  Knowing where to play in your area is important.

JUST IN: GreensKeeper.org Announces BEST PLAYING CONDITIONS AWARDS 2021

Winners Best Playing Conditions for 2021 from GreensKeeper.org

Best Playing Conditions 2022 GreensKeeper.orgPost Covid-19, It’s finally back! Greenskeeper.org presents it’s Best Golf Playing Conditions Awards for 2021.

Not to be confused with “Worth the Green Fee,” “Best Playing Conditions” is awarded to golf courses open to the public listed on Greenskeeper.org that stand out above the rest with our site users at providing consistently the best greens, fairways, rough, tee boxes and bunkers around.

The job of the superintendent is the life blood of the golf course industry and most important contributing factor to enjoying a golf experience.  It takes enormous dedication, resources and expertise by a superintendent and their staff to provide excellent turf conditions.  A golf course is a living, breathing organism whose health is constantly in flux. Greenskeeper.org’s trademark and creed, “Know Before You Go”®, centers on communicating these current playing conditions. The rating system used on Greenskeeper.org is in part created by superintendents.

ROUNDUP: GK Guru Visit Wood Ranch Golf Club

Wood Ranch Golf Club Simi Valley California

Wood Ranch Golf Club: Private

Simi Valley, CA
Reviewed by: JohnnyGK, Thousand Oaks

Out yesterday, 6/29 with GK Gurus for a review round proceeding the Golf Moose/GK Private Course outing on Monday 7/19. Such a great time. Even though I remembered little from my one and only previous round at Wood Ranch Golf Club in 2010, I did remember from that previous round what a fun golf course this is…as well as challenging. How challenging? … well back in 1987 the Senior Tour stopped coming to Wood Ranch because of difficult greens and high winds. Well, as a resident of nearby Thousand Oaks with relatives in Simi Valley, sure it can get windy but most of the time it is simply beautiful. Yesterday teeing off at 3:00pm and finishing around 7:15pm weather was gorgeous as was the golf course. I took so many photos…check them out posted here.

The layout is fantastic. Long, challenging off the tee with many fairway bunkers and hazards, many doglegs (most left-right), interesting and challenging on approach with well bunkered guarded greens, loaded with risk/reward holes, elevation changes and of course challenging undulating greens. Never a dull moment. In fact always an interesting shot requiring accuracy and thought. Above all, like I mentioned already, this is a FUN track.

Playing conditions were great. Greens smooth, moderately fast and holding shots. Fairways lush yet firm bermunda turf with full coverage other than a few ground under repair sections near the greens. Rough mostly lush but spotty thin at times. Thankfully the bermunda/kikuyu rough was cut down and very playable. I can only imagine how much tougher the course would be if the rough was up. Bunkers, all well-groomed with quality sand. The first inch or two of sand is soft but then is very firm. Totally playable and easy to hit out of but at first it took a little getting used too. The great thing is ALL the bunkers are the same sand texture so one you get them dialed your sand game improves. And let me tell you, I was in a ton of them – lol. Tee boxes in super shape. Immaculate and level.

If I was considering joining a Private Course, I would for sure, given how fantastic the golf is, the very polite service/staff, seriously consider Wood Ranch GC. If you are considering a private course, I highly recommend to check this one out, contact Janet Smith, their Membership Director at jsmith@woodranchgc.com. Super nice/professional personal.

CALIFORNIA AERATION ALERTS March – April 2021

It’s that time yet again.

Even in this era of Covid-19, golf courses still have to maintain their facilities.  It’s a necessary evil.  Please note, it’s not personal.  A golf course will not want to knowingly make your outing a nightmare.  You can alleviate some of this frustration by navigating the multitude of local golf courses that will be working on their greens using GreensKeeper.org.

At present, it’s maintenance season (i.e. aeration) in California.  Avoid the hassle, play golf courses that are either aerating at a later date or have just emerged from their maintenance.  Check out these great links, and Know Before You Go with GreensKeeper.org.

California Aeration Alerts

Northern California

Central California

Southern California

Editor’s Note:  At the time of writing they were currently over 400 Aeration Alerts posted.  Expect that number to increase over the upcoming weeks.
