Golf Playing Conditions 7.38 GREAT

7/18 using Teeoff deal time with 20% added discount for total of $62 good for Hawaii and pretty good for this particular course. Conditions overall were mixed ranging from quite good to fair. Majority of fairways were well covered with a broad bladed variety of grass cut to a nice level. Some fairways had mixed types leading to varied lies and some thin conditions. Rough was mostly the thicker bladed grass which quickly stopped the ball and often provided for a challenging recovery shot. Anything beyond the rough was 2-3 feet deep and gone. Course has good variety with a nice mix of shorter holes that still provide a challenge as fairways are more narrowly cut with water potentially in play on about 1/2 the holes. Course is up country scenic 10 or so degrees cooler with good vistas.

Tees level with good cover. Bunkers were consistently good with groomer fine but compacted white sand.
Greens with a couple of exceptions were good with #1 and #13 having some bare spots. More on the firm side rolled about medium with some grain to factor in as well as prevailing topography.

POP at just over 4 but seemed slower as we as a twosome followed several resort players who were definitely on vacation. On the plus side the views were great weather great until the last 5 holes when a 3 club wind blew in.
Staff really cool sent us off 40 minutes early.

Golf Playing Conditions 6.74 GOOD

I prefer the Palm of the two Marriott Desert Springs courses, better layout than the Valley. Today however, it was in the poorer playing condition of the two courses.

The Bermuda tees were mostly lush and level, decently maintained with few divots.

The Bermuda fairways were mostly lush, nice to play from.

The Bermuda rough was mostly lush close to the fairways. Get away from the fairways and you could encounter hardpan to knee deep lost ball rough.

The sand traps look okay but were very mediocre to play from. Nicely raked but most are too thin and/or compacted.

The Bermuda greens were poor today. Bumpy from a recent vericutt. They putted medium slow to slow speed and are firm with few ball marks.

The customer service is always very good here. No Drink cart today, ample water stations every few holes on the course. Carts have good GPS. All grass driving range included in your fee is a +. Fun course layout, Recommended.

Played Moorpark CC Saturday with 8 of us teeing off at 2pm. POP was good at around 4 hours 15 minutes. I’ll preface this review by saying, Moorpark is not my favorite course…I just don’t like the design.

Golf Playing Conditions 7.43 GREAT

The course itself was in very nice condition. Tee boxes were lush and level. The fairways had great coverage and were nice and green. The landing areas had some divots, but they’d mostly been filled in. The highlight of the course are the greens. They were running around 11 on the stimp, and really smooth. A delight to putt on. The rough was thick and lush, about 3 inches and can be penal. The biggest course downfall right now is the sand traps. Many of them are more like dirt traps, with very little base to get under the ball. Customer service was very good, except we never saw a beverage cart all day.

If Moorpark CC is a course you love, put it on your play list because the conditions are very good right now.

Played here Saturday evening for $39. Had played the Faldo side twice thus far this summer. Credit to the starters they had steered me to Faldo indicating it’s in the better shape. I chose to mix it up and play the Palmer side. Not anywhere close to the conditions on the other side.

It’s obvious they are keeping Faldo in more resort condition for the guests (Scenically more enticing course) This side has been let go to summer conditions. Definitely good summer conditions though.

Greens were good which is the most important thing. A little dried out, with some dried out ball-marks. But great medium/fast speed. Good roll. Bunkers were fine. Consistent little thicker sand. Tee boxes were not the best. Fair amount of divots and even dead areas in some tees. Fairways mostly great, but there were ground under repair areas around a few greens and some dead areas in others. Visually looked poor, but good conditions for summer outside the dead areas.

The course layout is great. Great mix of holes and flow to the course. Numbers 9 and 17 and fun holes. It’s a great layout in decent shape for summer.

Played the Blue tees today on a nice warm day. Used the GK coupon which included cart, hot dog and drink.

ustomer service was great at check in and snack bar. Started as a twosome, but a single behind us joined on #6. Then joined the single in front of us on #8. The foursome in front of him would not let him play through. Finished the front in 1.5 hours. Back nine took 2.5 hours.

Greens were receptive and rolled medium/fast speed. Fairways and rough in decent shape with mostly good lies. They were doing maintenance (pipes) on the right side of #8 fairway.

Bunkers in good condition, but a few were unraked. There are a lot of goose droppings on the holes surrounding the lake, so watch your step.

This is a nice course to boost your confidence and the GK coupon makes it a great deal.

Golf Playing Conditions 7.65 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.65 GREAT

Our tee time was 914 Saturday, 7/20 at GCU golf course. A large number of golfers were out this morning with lower temps and low rates at this course. GCU gets a lot of play on a regular basis. The last time I played this course a couple years ago I was not impressed with conditions. The course was in far better shape today and much more enjoyable.

We played the black tees and they were a challenge at almost 6800 yards. The course requires a fair amount of length off the tee with a number of the par 4s in the 420y-450y range. The course also requires accuracy in your approach shots as many greens are surrounded by well placed bunkers. The course does have a good variety of holes presenting different challenges.

Conditions were good for the price point. Fairways were not green carpet but bare spots were at a minimum. Tee boxes were all in good shape. The bunkers were nice with plenty of sand. The greens were the best part of the course. Soft, receptive of shots, and smooth throughout the day. The were were the same speed throughout the round.

GCU would be a good choice to play given conditions and the price of a weekend round at $30. Not a bad deal right now.

Played early 7/21. Arrived just-in-time and rolled a few putts only. Maybe not the best way to get warmed up and going at this course. Range available easy access. First tee shot (whites) requires a 185-199 yd shot downhill to get a flat landing area then just under 150 over a ravine to a green with laterals on both sides. Second hole 80yd drop par 3 at 130yds. It’s up and down at the mountain. Our playing partners referring to the tips guide and helped one of them to three pars in a row to get going.

The Review

Golf Playing Conditions 7.40 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.40 GREAT

Course is green and in good shape all around. Carts restricted on only one hole(10th) but could have been more as the par 5 fifth had a lot of water on it and I felt like it was so much in the fairway that I shouldn’t be driving on it in fear of damage. The grass was green and lush and cut tight but underfoot you definitely had squishy turf. This hole and a few others too.

Bunkers looked OK didn’t try them out. Rough manageable. Most holes have forest or deep grass. A lot of the side back areas have wild flowers with white daises and sweet peas in bloom right now.

Greens putted well and were fresh cut but also had excess moisture on them as if the were watered after cutting or the morning dew reset putts did not leave a trail on the surface. By the afternoon I’d think when dry would be rolling perfect for design.

Final Thoughts

Fun to play and it’s up and down and side-hills at an elevation of about 2700 ft. Big pines cedar and redwood like Tahoe. Cooler temps than the valley which is good this time of year for me.
Customer service great and recognized the pro shop and starter (tenured Sr’s) excellent service. The beer is cold. No beverages on the course at this early time.
