Golf Playing Conditions 5.30 GOOD

A rare occurrence these days, I found myself over on the West side yesterday and was inspired by roarksown1‘s recent review to revisit The Shire down in Venice. I used to live nearby and play it a lot, so there is a nice, comforting — maybe even nostalgic— familiarity for me to play there. Not much different to add to roarksown1‘s review.

I was a single added to two pairs to form a five-some. The course is in nice shape overall. It historically seems to hold up well, especially given the steady amount of traffic it gets. I would differ from the previous review only in his appraisal of the greens and maybe that is the difference a few days makes. The remnant pattern of aeration was still visible but I actually felt they putted smoother than they looked with no noticeable hops and at a decent medium/quickish pace.

The good news was that there were some open holes out ahead of us. The bad news was the one group ahead between us and those holes was slow, even by Penmar standards, and we couldn’t take advantage of it to have an uncharacteristically quick round. That said, one never plays Penmar with the expectation of anything more than a languid pace, at best. Our group gelled well, accepted the pace as a non-issue, and a very sociable and enjoyable round was had by all. I was glad I stopped by.

Honestly, the place never seems to change and I hope it never goes away.

Golf Playing Conditions 7.40 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.40 GREAT

Up again in No. Cal. visiting friends and family and always, try to get in a couple rounds. As usual, make a stop to play Boundary Oaks. I see I am only rater of this course for some time and don’t have a lot to add from previous reviews. On a cold morning, there were a couple of groups already out or on their way to the tee. Waited for a bit and the starter sent me out as a single paying a walking, weekday rate of $27. It was a bit tough to get warm out there. 39 degrees at tee off time with some frost on the fairways helped get some roll.

The course is showing winter is on the way. Fairways look to be going dormant but still in good condition. Some bare spots out there also but for the most part, good coverage. Tee boxes look like they have been worked on so over seeding may have taken place. Bunkers are in great condition. They have all been worked on and have good firm sand.

The greens are in good shape. Fast actually. The pins were in difficult locations today so you had to watch the speed or going downhill you could roll past the hole and down on the other side of the green.

Always enjoy playing here but have seen it in better condition. Looking forward to my next trip up north to play here again.

Played today in a nice 3 hour pace.

Tee boxes have begun to go dormant (Bermuda grass) but they were all playable/clean. Fairways had good coverage (though they are going dormant as well in areas) and gave good roll and good lies all round. Bunkers were all very playable. Little to no rough, but enough Out of Bounds (OB) and water to take care of that. Greens were great (but # 15 is a temp due to complete rebuild) and held shots, chipped/putted great and with speed.

Customer service excellent at all levels.

I grabbed a great deal on Teeoff.com for 10:06 11/12/2018.

The weather was not ideal, around 50 degrees and wind howling at 30MPH plus.

Because of the wind the greens were dry and firm. The course was in typical fall high season prime shape. Everything about the course was fantastic and in great shape.

The staff was, as always for me, friendly and helpful. The wind was out of the north so 3 of the 4 par 5’s were downwind and easily reachable in two. We played the Desert Hawk/Coyote Run combination.

Aside from the wind and cold temps, this was an exceptional day of golf. I highly recommend this course.

Played 11/4 8:30 with about a 20 minute fog delay.  We waited for the marine layer to blow off with the gentle breeze yielding to sunny skies and a cool start in the 50’s to mid 60’s.  It was a beautiful fall day for the 2nd round of tournament play.

The Review

Bayonet conditions similar to Black Horse was as expected and that rates in the 8-10 range for most areas of the course(s). Rating is one stroke more difficult for most handicaps compared to Black Horse but this matter of fact is almost indistinguishable. Greens were slick, rolling fast, with tight fairways, and lush rough.
Bayonet, which opened in 1954, is steeped in golf and military history. Created on the site of the former Fort Ord by General Robert B. McClure.  It was christened in honor of the 7th Infantry Light Fighter Division (nicknamed the “Bayonet Division”).

Back 9 holes starting with 11 dogleg left.  History says it was because the General was a lefty with a “fade” so he ordered the holes designed to help his tee shot tendency.

Final Thoughts

Again all course conditions great and in line for a $$$ fee course. Customer service great and beverage cart out all day.

Third year in a row here the first weekend of November and it’s been consistent great conditions and services from staff.

Black Friday is Made for Golfers

Black Friday 2018

Black Friday:  Don’t Fight It Out on the Retail Battleground

Play a Round of Golf Instead

We all know that Black Friday is a manufactured “Holiday.”

It’s the Friday after Thanksgiving and it’s a combination shopper’s paradise and personal hell.  But fear not my golfing brothers and sisters!  Instead of fighting for the latest Millennial Monopoly or attacking a bargain bin of $25 Amazon Firesticks and battling it out with other crazed shoppers you have the option to play some golf and escape it all.

Stay Safe.  Play a round of golf.  You’ll thank yourself for the solace.  Of course there is no guarantee you will play well but at least you can enjoy yourself with friends or family.

Had fun out here yesterday with JohnnyGK, kevbig and rob1563. We teed off at 7:50. It was a great clear day for pictures, but it was rather chilly and extremely windy. That made a demanding course even more difficult and it eventually wiped all of us out. Nobody in front of us or behind us, so we enjoyed a nice relaxed pace of a little over 4 hours.

As Kevin described, the conditions overall were very nice. The tee boxes were generally great. There were a few of the whites where the over-seed didn’t seem to come in as well, but never had a problem finding a fine spot to tee it up. The fairways were excellent. Deep green with perfectly fluffy lies all day. The rough is kept dormant and it was shaved down to almost nothing in most places. Some rough sections provided reasonable lies while others were just way too firm and thin. Bunkers were excellent. Greens were also great. They were firm, yet receptive enough and rolling well at fairly quick speeds (especially wind-assisted putts).

I always enjoy any visit to Rio Secco and this one was no exception, especially when playing with a fun GK Guru group. The cold wind gusts certainly made things interesting, but the course is so enjoyable. As always, the staff was fantastic and the facilities are great, so it’s definitely worth a high recommendation.
