Had an early birthday present given to me by Alex326 who picked up my green fee to play Aviara Golf Club on Friday 1/25. I’ve always wanted to play it having read so many positive reviews and seen so many beautiful photos. Thank You.

The Review

Outstanding golf course while not being in its typical immaculate shape yet still in great shape and tons of fun. Loved it. Place is loaded with signature holes. One of the most beautiful sets of par 3’s I’ve ever played.

Greens were smooth, fast, holding shots and very tricky to read. Without question the most challenging aspect of the golf course. Other challenging aspects were the many tight tree lined holes with thick rough. We found the front 9 rough more thick and prevalent than that back nine. The course has it’s fair share of small strategically placed water hazards close to the green complexes but not much water besides hole 8, 16 and 18 that come into play other than par 3’s. It’s a hilly course that winds its way through the high scale Aviara community/resort and there are some steep uphill and downhill shots to be found.

As for the course conditions besides the greens that I already mentioned, the fairways in very good shape. Mostly lush with full coverage. I’m not sure if the golf course closes for over-seeding before the Kia Classic at the end of March to get them pure and LPGA tour lush or if the turf is just more suited to warm weather and really perks up then. Rough, lush with some real thick stuff as mentioned its best to avoid. Bunkers in great shape with quality sand, little firm and perfectly manicured. Tee boxes, we played the blue tees and I was surprised by the mediocre condition. They had full coverage but thin at times and with noticeable divot damage. Still just fine to hit from but for such a high-end course but this caught me by surprise.

Parting Thoughts

Regarding the amenities and service, top shelf, of course. Great staff, service, clubhouse, practice area and high-end feel throughout the day. I understand the food is delicious but did not have time to hang out after with Alex for bite to eat as I needed to take on the traffic and run an errand on the way home to Thousands Oaks. btw – grab a complementary cookie afterwards, tasty.

This was a golf experience I will never forget and can’t wait to have again. I’d like to come back in April-June after the Kia Classic as I hear the golf course is in mint condition then as well as the flowers being in full bloom. Highly Recommended. Check out some of the photos I posted.

Another fun GK Plays outing yesterday. Thanks to JohnnyGK, the sponsors and the staff at La Costa for providing a great venue for the shotgun outing. I was in group 1B with dconnally and kassper7. Pace of play slowed down quite a bit in the middle of the round, but otherwise a very good overall Pace of Play (PoP.)

The course was in very nice condition all around. It was still pretty soft after the rain this week, so not much roll-out on drives and they probably haven’t been able to mow on a normal schedule. Tee boxes were great. Fairways were generally great with some mushy spots here and there, some marked off as GUR. The rough was brutal. It was very deep, lush and thick, so you wanted to avoid it as much as you could. Greens soft and rolling well at medium speeds, just getting a bit scruffy by the end of the round as expected. I was only in one bunker and it was well maintained with adequate sand.

I don’t know if I am in the minority, but I’ve always preferred the Legends Course over the Champions Course. I feel it has more character, nicer aesthetics and a solid layout. Either way, it was a great day out there with the GK crew. Now looking forward to today at Rams Hill!

Playing Conditions 6.63 GOOD
Playing Conditions 6.63 GOOD

Played today, teeing off at 12:44pm on a lovely day, with about 1-2 club wind from the west. POP was slow, about 10 mins shy of 5hrs.

Since my last visit 12 days ago, the tees are filling in with new thin grass from the scalping. Wet enough on some tees to draw water up, so pretty soft footing at times. Likely need 2 more weeks to be good.

Rest of the course was fantastic, fairways were cut nicely, lush and green, and provided good roll. Greens were a bit firmer today, smoother and faster than 2 weeks ago, and held shots well. Noticed that a few have fungus problems directly on their slopes for whatever reason.

Not in any bunkers and only in the rough a few times, which wasn’t very penal today – got some decent lies, could’ve been just lucky for once.

Only saw the cart girl once, while we were waiting on the 15th tee. She never did make it to us, however, as she came up to #14 from the 13th hole, then turned around back to #13! Guess this is what they mean by ‘limited cart service’ on the back nine. Friendly greeting by the bag valet up front, pro shop and starter. Love the course, starting to look and play very nice again.

Golf Playing Conditions 6.88 GOOD

Got out on time at 1:39pm Monday, 8/13 at Crossings Club rate of $40 with a Father/Son twosome. POP was slow on the day, 4hrs 50mins.

While waiting on the 10th tee, decided to take in the great views from there and noticed the slo-poke culprits were 4 groups in front, as they were making the long drive in their carts to #12 tee, with two groups backed up behind them playing #11, and the next group in front of them were already on the 13th green, two full holes ahead. So, dang you 1:03pm group!!! 😉 Like I said, great views from there, you can see parts of nearly all of the back 9 from there!

The Review

Course was probably in the best overall condition I’ve seen it this year from tee to green. Doing a lot of watering, things are a bit soft in places. Tees were great. Fairways didn’t provide great roll-out, but were cut nicely and always had a good lie. Rough was the most even/consistent I’ve ever seen at the Crossings, and very grabby of the clubhead.

Greens were soft and receptive, very well-watered, but did roll medium to medium-fast, or perhaps I just jammed a few too many past the hole, expecting them to be slower. Wasn’t in any bunkers, but they looked great for the most part, though one of my playing partners ended up in an unraked footprint on #6, which he wasn’t happy about.

Aside from the slower play, a great day out on this lovely course. Saw the cart girl 3 times, including once on the back side, which is rare. Just wish they had a marshal out, which we never saw.

Final Thoughts

The bar and players lounge patio area has been closed for more than a month now, and they are not sure when it will re-open. Evidently their liquor license did not properly include that bar area for all these years and was pulled. So, that’s a bummer right now. An after-round unwind with beer/food on the patio in the summer was about as good as it gets, with views and fires. They must be losing some serious $ by not having it at the moment, so hopefully it will re-open soon!

Golf Playing Conditions 8.64 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 8.64 GREAT

Played today with friend at 1pm on a GolfNow deal at the twilight rate of $170, which is a steal for this track at that time.

The Review

Short and simple since a reviewed it a few months back.

Tee boxes, fairways, greens, sand and rough are ALL immaculate, as usual here.

There WERE a couple greens that were sanded and mini punched, which still played fine. Disappointed nobody mentioned but not enough to complain about. Other than that though, greens we’re soft and receptive to all approaches but still rolling true and pure, and fast fast fast. Perfect elite level stuff, as usual.

By FAR AND AWAY the biggest difference from last visit was the rough, which played more reasonably difficult than the next to impossible it had prior. Not only was it much shorter, but more importantly it was MUCH THINNER than they had it set up for the LPGA’ers. Right now it’s a great test, but you can still FIND YOUR BALL AND HAVE A CHANCE TO REACH THE GREEN. Couldn’t say that before, it was simply TOO DEEP AND THICK for the amateur.

Final Thoughts

Service was ELITE again, everyone over the top friendly and professional.

It’s ridiculously expensive on rack rate, but this course will NOT disappoint.

World. Class. Golf.

Golf Playing Conditions 6.82 GOOD

Played The Crossings on Thursday, 6/28, teeing off about 1:40pm with larryq2001 on a lovely, mostly sunny and 70s day, mostly calm, with up to a 1-club wind at times. Friendly greeting in the pro shop and by the starter. $40 Crossings Club member rate.

Teeing off as a Twosome, we were then paired up with the Twosome behind us, as the starter sent them up to join us as we teed off. A nice couple, he had a real good scoring day, but they were both a bit pokey.  A single played through at the turn, and our POP ended up at just about 4.5hrs.

The Review

Course was in very good overall shape. White tees – all good and level. Fairways rolled out very nicely, and provided good lies. Only issue for me, with a few approach shots landing short of greens, the aprons were over-watered up to 30 feet in front, meaning no extra bounces, leaving plug-n-play, muddy balls, squishy turf and tricky chip shots to front pins.

Rough in a few spots was very dense and grabby, at least a club penal, and in other areas was a more typical choppy coverage, where the ball would sit down, but the grass/shot was a bit more manageable. Was in 3 greenside bunkers, which was good, as I was trying out a newly-modified SW. Sand was pretty decent, mostly a new, fine sand, but with not too much – about 2 inches, to get to the base. Had one ‘fried egg’ lie on the par3 14th.

Seemed that about 1/2 the greens have been re-punched a few days earlier, with slightly smaller holes than a full punch, but not the tiny ones. No sanding was evident, I can’t say that putting was affected too much, but greens were slow putting uphill, and medium-speed overall.

Final Thoughts

Great service after the round by Katie in the bar, with good food, too. A fun round, and it was fun to watch Larry play a very good scoring, and consistent round. I estimate the greens will be fully healed in 7-10 days.

1/31 $25 birthday round on an ideal sc winter day–worked in early by starter for 4 hr POP with some waiting but with the setting and the weather we didnt care–was able to take some extra putts and chips as the 4some following was no where to be seen.
Setting is great–holes are separated–some seem to be 1/4 mile apart as you wind thru the canyons and hills. Generally ample landing areas with at least one fairway side offering some safety– but some forced carries. Fairway conditions quite good with very few wet areas–overall tightly mowed but with good cushion and acceptable roll out. Closely mowed approaches to green which looked to be great for chips but required a precise strike as any shot hit even a little fat would really grab the club or on flops would give too much bounce in to the ball. Rough some what thin and short along most fairways–a little longer and thicker near the greens.
Tees level with good cover. Bunkers well maintained with consistently good quality sand.
The greens are large with quadrants that accentuate the contours providing the opportunity for a range of pin placements that could increase the degree of difficulty by a factor of 10. Speed was a little below medium fast–putts rolled fairly smoothly–but there were many un-repaired or poorly repaired ball marks.
Friendly helpful golfer oriented staff. This is a higher end course that is probably worth the 50-75 $ deals that can be found–but is an absolute must for your birthday play–thanks Crossings and GK for the posting.
