Golf Playing Conditions 9.55 IMMACULATE

I have been to Monterey plenty of times & played many of the other offerings on the peninsula, but I have only been to Pebble Beach once – during the 2000 US Open. I remember rolling up to Pebble thinking I wouldn’t ever consider paying $500 to play any golf course & after walking the course, I would pay 4x that amount. The place is simply stunning.

Smash cut to 18 years later – I won a free round at Pebble Beach in my Golf Group’s Annual Member-Guest tourney in March of this year, so finally had a chance to play it on 11/10. First off the tee at 6:40am & our 4-some was set up with a caddie for each person. Just an amazing morning – zero wind, about 60 degrees & climbing and no fog. There was definitely smoke from the fires up in Northern California, however the air quality was okay.

The Review

Being first off, we set the pace at around 3:45. We were about 2-holes ahead of the next group throughout the round. They are hosting the Taylormade Invitational this week, so the conditions were immaculate: from the tee boxes to the greens & everything in between. Soup to nuts, a solid 9.5. Caddies were really knowledgeable & fun. We finished our round with the obligatory lunch & drinks in the Taproom & it is everything it’s cracked up to be & more. The food & service were outstanding & the ambiance is second to none. Just an amazing, Bucket-List Day!

Morning tee time at Eagle Glen. Check in and first tee were organized and smooth. Tee boxes had good coverage. Fairways were a little thin and the ball would really run out. Rough had good coverage. Traps had good sand and were well maintained. Greens were in excellent shape, they held quality shots and had very few unfixed divots. Greens were smooth and fast, had three three putt greens. Lots of subtle breaks and undulations in the green complexes.

Wind was about 15 mph and was enough to make club selection a little tricky. POP was a little over four hours. Good Seniors rates.

Walked the Oak Tees this morning 11/12/2018 teeing off at 10am joined by a very nice couple. Our POP was 4 hrs 50 minutes on a holiday which wasn’t too bad. Weather was perfect around 70-75 degrees with hardly any wind. Fantastic staff here, great prices(paid $25.00) to walk and a very fun layout created by the Olympic Course architect Gil Hanse. Always a very peaceful vibe up here in Ojai with beautiful mountain backdrops.

The Review

The greens were very quick and in great shape. They were supposed to receive maintenance last week but they did not and other than 1/2 of number 1 green on the right side being punched all the greens were fast, smooth and holding irons beautifully. Staff should be commended.

Fairways are still nice and full and lush, mostly all green, no problem areas and for this late in the golf season that’s awesome.

The tees were mostly all lush, some need leveling, but for the most part great shape.

The rough was in decent shape, some lush parts and some semi-lush spots.

I was in 2 green-side bunkers and they had super soft beach sand that you really need to thump the ball to get out. All bunkers looked well maintained and raked.

Final Thoughts

You can really tell that the new management is really putting a lot of effort into the course. On number 12 just right of the green under the trees they have re-sodded a big area that used to be dirt, looks fantastic.

Would highly recommend Soule Park.

Eight of us played here yesterday at 8AM.  Most had never played here and it has been awhile since I had played it. The Santa Ana winds were blowing all day but the course was still playable. I am not sure how the course is doing overall since it was not too crowded for a holiday (Veterans Day). I chose here for a couple reasons, the GK ratings were good and the price on there website was $54 per person. They had plenty of tee times available and most courses were up charging for the holiday so we gave it a try.

Course conditions were all above average.  The greens especially were exceptional.  We all found them to be great. They held shots, rolled fairly fast and smooth, and were a joy to play. Pace was great at 4 hours and we all stayed for lunch afterwards which was great too.

I recommend Anaheim Hills right now with service, conditions, and pace being great however the holes can be a little gimmicky due to blind shots and sloping fairways especially to first timers.

Played LRG for the first time weekend of 11/3 in an early morning (between 7:30 and 8:30) tee time, walking the blacks. I had heard strong things about the course since it’s renovation and wanted to check it out, and felt $58 to walk was pretty reasonable. Coming from near Hollywood, it’s a pretty easy ride to the track since it’s right off the freeway and a bit closer than the Moorpark courses.

The Golf Course Review

Needless to say, LRG likely exceeded my expectations. The greens could’ve been faster, but were smooth. Fairways were good; much better than the LA municipals.

The overall look of the place was awesome with the turf reduction and retro-looking traps, though its now a modern thing.  We played the blacks as the course is short, but its so funny to see a front 9 around 2800 and a back nine around 3500.

I’d say overall the course played its distance and was mostly out in front of you. I wasn’t too crazy about the 15th hole.  If only I had known that missing the green right was dead. We also found judging the downhill for the par 3 16th harder than judging the downhill for the par 3 6th hole.

Overall, I really liked the course though left a few shots out there, particularly on the 12th & 14th holes. Also for what it’s worth, and I know par is just a number, but calling the 1st and 12th holes par 5s is silly. I had 185-210 yards into each of them, and the 8th hole played longer than both. I suppose they do it because the look of a par 70 is more enticing than a par 68, but what this course really is a solid challenging par 68 from ~6300 yards.

The Bottom Line

Given how hard prime tee times are to come by, my review isn’t exactly spoiling a hidden gem here. Net net, I was very happy with Los Robles and would come back.

It’s an easy walk (minus gap between 9 & 10) and it makes you think. You could conceivably hit driver on all 13 non-par 3s, but it’s certainly optional, almost not preferred on 3-5, 9 & 13. As for these new bunkers, lots of sand, fluffy and somewhat moist, but the ball doesn’t get hung up in the fingers. They are tough, but fair.

If you catch a lie in the high grass surrounding the bunkers, good luck. Caught one on 11 and moved the ball 5 yards into the trap in front of me, but hey that’s what gives the course its teeth and that is fine.

You get what you pay for at LRG and I’d say $58 to walk it or $74 to ride is preferable to $92 at Tierra Rejada and comparable to River Ridge Victoria Lakes given location for an LA resident. Olivas/Rustic are still preferable, provided you can play in under 5 hours, but the combo of cost/course/condition/proximity makes LRG a top play right now for an LA resident.

Played Monday, 11/5, teeing off a few minutes after noon with Larryq2001 and was paired with friendly GKer Dubwiser. We finished a bit over 4 hours, with a few short waits on a lovely day. They played the blues and I teed off from the white tees.

White tees were level and in pretty good shape for this time of year. As previously mentioned, a few tee areas are closed and in process of growing new grass. Fairways were overly watered in spots – where I landed my shots, of course – and often got no/little roll-out, which made the course that much more demanding and adding yards to 2nd shots. Was able to draw casual water in my stance 3 times, including once on a strong slope! The course was green enough – it’s November – stop with the over-watering!!!

While I was fortunate to avoid any bunkers, was in the rough too many times, and found it diabolical and grabby.

Greens looked fantastic, dark green, held shots fairly well and provided mostly smooth putting. Excepting a few pin placements located directly on slopes, they putted medium-slow, however, and found it a challenge to get long putts anywhere near the holes.

Cart lady came by a few times and saw a friendly marshal twice. Definitely recommend playing here, just wish they would let the course dry out a little bit!

Played Friday 11/2, 9:50 tee time, after 10 yrs in the Sacramento area, I finally made it up here, and am so glad I did. A beautiful Sierra course, an hour closer than Tahoe at more than half the price.

Course in great shape from tee to green. This is definitely a target golf course. The course tips they provide on the golf cart (and free yardage books) are very, very helpful, and the most helpful I’ve ever come across. It was like having a caddy.

Execute their tips, from tee to green, and you can score well on your first time playing. I used driver on maybe 5 holes. Greens moderately fast, maybe a 10 stimp. 4:10 round as a threesome.

Fun time. I wish it was closer. Went to Boa Vista Orchard after to get some apples. Great day.
