Wife and I made the 2.25 hour drive out to Frankston to check out this course. It is well respected and regarded as one of the top public courses in the state.

Okay, so first impression was good.  Nothing overly awe inspiring from the parking lot, but you could see ALL the towering pines all around. Easy check in and off to the range.  Balls are complimentary and the range was decent –no complaints.

The course was fun, challenging especially for the first timer.  Complex greens and you really need to know where to hit and where you could miss. This course reminded me at times of Pinehurst and also Texarkana Country Club.

It is a fairly tight course with its share of doglegs.

Final Thoughts

I am glad we made the trek to play the course, but I don’t know if i would make that drive again for it. I think the regulars have a GOOD monthly deal, but the general public like us are paying over $80 each for weekend play –a bit high in my opinion.

Willows Run Golf Complex (Coyote Creek)

Golf Course Review Willows Run Golf Complex Coyote Creek Redmond Washington

Reviewed by: jamesph99, Redmond
Played Coyote yesterday (Saturday, 9/21/19) and had a decent time, although I must say I’m a little bit disappointed in the conditions.

I’ve played their other course a lot this year, and have found it to be in great shape so I was surprised to see this course already starting to feel like winter golf.

Greens were a little bit bumpy, but not too bad. They were super soft, a good iron shot would leave quite the crater and any shot would hold.

Fairways and tee boxes were definitely a bit scruffier than I would have liked to see, and the one bunker I found was awful.

Rough is long and lush, if you got lucky and the ball sat up it was easy to play from, but if it sat down you would have your work cut out for you.

I’m happy I played it, but I’ll probably choose their other course until spring comes around.

After a couple of days of cycling and kayaking it was time to head out to the course and play with the new GK App! Sundays during football season can be a great time to play golf on the peninsula. I tee’d off at about 11:30am which was the perfect gap. The morning crowd was already on the back nine and the afternoon folks hadn’t arrived yet. I had clear sailing until the 15th when I ran into a foursome who refused to let me by even though I was on the tee box with them for 4 holes! Still it was a 3 hour round even with the delay.

Conditions are nice right now at Laguna Seca. Greens were soft and rolled smooth for the most part. there were a few pitch marks here and there but nothing too bad. Fairways were the best I’ve seem them in years. I noticed a few thin areas as I was driving but i had excellent lies and hitting surface on all of my shots.

I was in three sand traps and two were excellent and one was below average having thin, semi-hard dirt.

As I’ve mentioned before, Laguna Seca is a super fun track. Add in the solid conditions right now and it’s a no brainer. It was also the perfect course for me to play around with the new GK App and post some live photo’s while playing.

Played in a 8am shotgun tournament on Saturday, 9/21. There were actually two shotgun tournaments that started at the same time.

The course moved surprisingly quick. Within a few holes, the group in front of us were usually putting out by the time we got to the tee, and the group behind us could not be seen. I think the nice pace of the course may have had a lot to do with the generous layout.

The Review

Playing Conditions 6.99 GOOD
Playing Conditions 6.99 GOOD

Playing from the white tees, the course was mostly a progression of 360 yard par 4s with fairly wide fairways. The rough did tend to fairly lush and would tend to grab and catch your club-face. There were quite a bit of brown spots on some of the fairways, spots I would have expected to be marked as ground under repair. The greens were fairly soft and putted nicely at a medium-fast speed.

My playing partner and I did have some bad luck with golf carts. Our first cart would stall on startup, and we would have to throw it into reverse and then back to forward for it to move. At the turn, we exchanged it for another cart. This second cart, when we would slow down, would suddenly slam on the brakes by itself, jerking us to an abrupt stop.

Final Thoughts

I didn’t get a chance to interact with the pro shop, but the Marshall on course was very nice and very helpful when we told him about our problems with our first cart. The young lady in the beverage cart was also very nice and showed up a few times on a day that got into the mid-80s. We really couldn’t ask for better weather in Fontana, and we finished the round in what felt like a quick 4 hr 20 min, done before any afternoon winds would kick up.

Played Friday, 7am as a two-some at Westridge.  It was a four hour round.

Course in decent shape. Greens are in good shape.  Estimate greens running about a slow 10 on the Stimp.

It’s a challenging layout which demands accuracy, but if you hit good shots, you can score well. It’s a nice daily fee course kept in municipal shape.  In my opinion conditions are acceptable, and the price is right. Had a good time.

Played here this morning (9/16) with a couple of older gentlemen who were great company. I had played here for the first time earlier this year and I enjoyed the layout and today was no different. I believe conditions this time were possibly even better, even with this major heat up & down So. Cal has been suffering from. Played okay overall but the course was not really to blame.

The Review

Golf Course Playing Conditions 6.97 GOOD
Golf Course Playing Conditions 6.97 GOOD

Tee boxes: Okay condition but they could use some leveling. All the boxes had a bit of chewed up turf, and the ground was certainly not as level as it could have been.

Fairways: Good shape with a fair amount of run, even if they were incredibly wet at tee off and dried out during the morning. Not a lot of divots given the amount of play this course was getting and many people seemed to fill their divots.

Rough: Thick and penal in places, however the native area was far more punishing than any of the rough.

Bunkers: The weakest part of the course; they were awful in my opinion. No bunker had an adequate amount of sand, the sand that WAS present was dirt-like and somehow more than a few of the bunkers had water/mud in them which made them unplayable.

Greens: The highlight of the round. They were vibrant with a nice green color, a good true roll to them and slow to medium speeds. Some of the pin placements were insanely unfair, but it was good to put my skills to the test.

Final Thoughts

ETC: Staff was friendly, including the cart attendant who came around at least twice. Carts had good juice but no GPS and considering the terrain, they could stand to have gas powered carts here. Layout is great, except for 17 which really does feel like they forgot to include it in the original schematics and tucked it in last minute.

Green fees seemed more than fair and anyone who lives close to here should check it out.

Golf Playing Conditions 8.02 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 8.02 GREAT

With how busy I’ve been burning the candle at both ends preparing/testing the GreensKeeper iPhone app, Saturday’s golf round, an invite from last month I accepted from a client, came at the perfect time.

I played in an outstanding golf tournament in support of the Ojai Valley Family Shelter and of course Soule Park was the perfect the host. This was a very well run event with a full field. We teed off just after 8:00am and finished in just over 5 hours but it was one of those tournaments with fun games on the course which contributed to long round. Plus it was hot. High 90’s.

Golf course was in excellent shape. Greens running smooth, fast and holding shots. Fairway lush with decent roll out. Rough lush but cut down so not much of a factor. Most fairways are generously open so grip and rip! However miss the fairways and there is a steep price to pay. Trees, brush, bunkers or small water hazards. Speaking of the bunkers — fantastic. Beautifully designed with quality white sand. From the tee boxes, love the site lines and gorgeous Ojai backdrops. Tee boxes were in good shape, lush with some divot damage.

I snapped some photos to check out – highly recommended!
