Golf Playing Conditions 7.40 GREAT

Played this course on a perfect 75-80 degree Saturday before the Super Bowl as part of a two day golf/grub/SBowl roadie vacation (Day 1 was Hunter Ranch). Today with a de facto fivesome (which they rightly don’t allow. We had two riders, three walkers in the next tee time) started at ten and finished a little after 2:30. Busy morning at this muni which had a great buzz and vibe going. Didn’t hit balls, but one of us said range was adequate and sort of half grass half not. Nice putting area, food service, pro shop.

Walked and carried (thewalkinggolfer.com has this as very walkable, I would say it is a bit tougher than that) and felt every year of my 57 by the uphill 18th green this day. Starts out flat and kind of easy, leading you to think, “we’re going to tear this place up”, but gets hilly and more difficult as the canyons swoop up and down. There are a few houses near the course but nothing intrusive. The views are basically SoCal trees and mountains to the east. Really nice.

Shortish on the card, but you have to place tee shots on the proper side to score well as big and old trees are the best defense the course has. Greens were real nice, fairly speedy and rolled true. Bunkers good or better and the fairway grass was consistent and hardy enough to perch your approach up giving confidence for the second shot. Wish we could grow this grass in NorCal. Some really short and long par 3’s (that basically ruined a great scorecard for me this day) that are fun and perfect for degenerate gambling.

Pace was decent, we let one twosome through us all on the backside. Frankly the walk/carry was a bit more than expected and the sunny day made a slower pace acceptable and even appreciated. I’d play this great muni again any day. Bring your best wedge game and you’ll have a blast.

Went off at 11 with fellow GKers David, Matt and Ron. Weather was nice, with a bit of wind picking up as we started. Driving range surface is a bit loose and sandy. Putting green is really, really furry and slow, so no help. The course was mostly in good condition with a couple greens being a bit off. The first green was a bit furry and slow, as was the fourth green. The rest of the greens were pretty nice. Bunkers were good to play from and the layout is challenging for a hack like me (we played the Blue/White combo which is a good mix). I like this course even though I played badly . . . but any day upright, playing golf is a glorious day!

l day however and got out pretty much on time. POP was just short of 5 hours. That was on us and not because of the crowd. Spent some time looking for balls which was is always a problem here because of some blind shots and a lot of brush off of the fairways. Got to play faster however and fortunately, no one waited on us.

Regardless, the course is very good condition right now. Fairways are nice with great lies. The rough is a bit thick but not too difficult to get out of. Wasn’t in any bunkers but they appeared to be soft and in good condition.

Greens were in great shape. Rolled very nicely. They slowed as the sun went down and got cooler but they are still very nice

I always have a good time playing here and this day was no exception. Great customer service with very nice course conditions. What’s not to like?? Looking forward to getting out there again.

A quick update since my last post. Course is in excellent condition right now with smooth greens that easily hold approach shots. Fairways are lush as is the rough which was a little thicker than usual. Considering the course was packed POP was decent at right at 4 hrs.

This is an old course and is designed to be walked. Transfers are very short which is good for walking but bad etiquette as several times groups on another hole are talking or hootin and hollering during your swing/putt. It’s not that they mean to be disrespectful it’s just that you are so close to the other group it’s easy to disrupt a player during his/her swing/putt without realizing it.

There’s no driving range at Del Monte but Monterey Pines is a 3 minute drive up the road and has a range.

I still would like to see a couple of lakes on this course to add to the excitement and aesthetics of the course. Having said that there are (distant) views of the ocean from holes 8,9,10,11,13, and 16.

I don’t get out to RR very often, but the Lakes course is on my list of favorite all around courses. Value, conditions, layout, facilities, accessibility, dog friendly and as good a birthday deal as you will find.

I wasn’t disappointed today and the all-around conditions were very good.

Tees boxes were level, clean and well covered. The winter fairways were like hitting off a soft indoor/outdoor carpet — somewhat tight but with a cushiony base to it that made for a nice hitting surface that had a good deal of roll-out. Winter coloring not withstanding, I don’t recall any bare or thin patches as in hard-pan type thin. The rough was generally consistent on the playable side. I was in some bunkers and they were clean and groomed with a nice medium density sand. Relatively tight around the greens, you frequently had the option to chip or putt from beyond the apron. The greens themselves were rated 11.5 and that’s about how they felt —challenging and quick, clean, demanding your attention but not unfair.

Beautiful weather, temperature was perfect with a 1.5 to 2 club breeze at times. I can’t think of a negative in the conditions and I’d play it again at the drop of a hat.

Playing Conditions 6.84 GOOD
Playing Conditions 6.84 GOOD

Played today, teeing off at 11:18 with a GK Coupon, $28 walking by myself. It was mostly uncrowded today and after playing through a couple of groups on holes 2 and 14, I was able to finish in 3 hours and 10 minutes. I joined another walking single on holes 7 through 13, when he had to leave. Hole 13 is basically the old turn at the clubhouse and I think he had to pick up his kid. One of the marshals gave me a lift to 14 tee and that group there let me pass. After that it was wide open.

Tees: Level and lush. A few par threes and short par fours had some divot damage, but there was ample sand bottles if only folks would use them.

Fairways and rough: Not too much difference between either. Good lies and plenty of turf to hit from most everywhere except in a couple of areas of rough between holes 10 and 11 where you could find some scruffy lies. It seems like it’s always like that on this part of the course. Might be an irrigation issue because it seems like it’s up on the ridge and the ground appears dryer than other areas of the course. It’s not bad by any means and is comparable to many courses in So Cal. Everywhere else there is a lot of good turf.

Greens: You could see micro-punched holes on the greens, but it did not affect roll. Good speed; starter had a board stating they were 10′-8″. Not many ball marks were seen although the greens were soft enough for me to create deep craters with high approaches. I think the greens are great on this course and even though they were kind of medium fast, they held most shots with any spin.

Sand: I saw lots of good sand, at least in the one bunker I found on hole 17, about 10 yards in front of the green.

Overall, I like this course. I felt there were good playing conditions from tee to green. After the round I ran into t8fish, fellow GKer, and his dog. We all went to the snack shack for a bite and some good conversation; well, Kevin and I conversed while the dog was just being cool.

I have to recommend this course, especially with the GK Coupon. Thanks to Johnny and Otto to help out a fellow American!

Played today, Saturday. Course is in good overall condition. Walked on as a single, Chris in the pro shop was very helpful. Pace of Play (POP) was pretty foul at 5 hrs. 3 groups on 6 tee-box was awful. Oh well, what do you expect for a municipal on a beautiful Saturday. Other than the wait on 6 and 10, it wasn’t too bad. We literally waited on 6 for 30mins, waited on 10 for 15mins and waited on 17 for 15mins. So other than that, it was smooth.

Teeboxes were just fine. Some divot damage, but always level and able to find a good place to tee it up. Fairways were in pretty good shape. The landing areas were in better shape than the short/long/inbetween areas. I never had any problem in the fairway. Rough was pretty brutal, long and lush. stay out of the rough. I was in one bunker and it was just fine. Greens were great, held shots well and putted very true and quick.

Go ahead and get on out there. I think this track is awesome. Great layout and pretty darn challenging. so many killer holes, 10, 14,16 are just killer

Played a couple of times this past week. Overall course is ok and certainly good enough for my golf itch. Teed off in the morning both times and there was quite a bit of frost on the course. After it melted it seemed a little damp but I’m sure towards the afternoon you couldn’t tell.

Greens were ok. Faster in the beginning of the round. I couldn’t figure that out maybe the frost made the greens slick and the water after it melted slowed it down? Still a lot of ball marks out there.

Fairways were good. A lot of divots out there that need to be filled but it was good to hit from. A few bad areas in a couple of fairways.

Rough is not bad. A few areas the ball can settle down in but generally the rough won’t alter your shot selection.

Bunkers were nice. Probably the most sand I’ve seen in them and nice to hit from. They just need to be raked from the previous day.

Conditions will not wow you but the course has it challenging holes and pretty affordable that I’ll continue to keep it in my rotation.
