Was great seeing mpisarski01, kviser, larryq2001, dsal_13 and Mattias. Put this round together on late notice and really appreciate those that could join me. I want to find a way to get together with GK’ers on just about every weekend. For me, as brutal as the high winds, cold temps, wet conditions, excruciating slow pace (due to a tournament) and very poor play on my part was … awesome time as always with GK’ers! Afterwards kviser, Mattias and I went over to the Ventura Harbor for some clam chowder and beers. Golf is best with friends no matter. Thank You.

The Review

The course, greens in very nice condition, running mostly smooth, fast (can only imagine how fast they will be when they dry out more) and holding shots. I found many bunkers and they were all in good shape. Was impressed how well they had drained. No standing water and not that moist. Fairways are Bermuda turf with sprinkles of Poa dotted only because of the wet winter season, come late spring, summer and fall when they are in season, they should be beautiful. Rough is a mixture of many grasses and varying in length, had many experiences due to being wild off the tee, it’s pretty easy to escape from. Tee boxes thin, level with some divot damage (we played the blue tees).

With the high winds coming off the ocean from the NW holes 1, 2, 6, 8, 13, 15 are super tough into the wind. Holes 7 and 12 have large water hazards on the right so that wind can grab your ball and easily deposit it into the drink. Holes 17 and 18 play straight downwind so that’s a nice almost too little too late breather. I love this layout. It destroys me just about every time. I’ve played it well over 20 times and have only had a couple great performances. I’ll be back for sure to take it on again.

Went out walking Sunday morning, 9/9, with an 11:07 tee time combined with three other players into a foursome. RGM 2525 wrote a review after playing here a few days earlier and there is little I can add to it, so I will point you there since he describes pretty much the exact conditions I experienced.

The differences that come to mind are that it took us 4.5 hrs. to play with no one in front slowing us down (ouch), and the one fairway bunker I was in was perfect for executing a recovery. I also used the Greenskeeper coupon, so it was a great deal for a nice course. My dog also had a good time, although he got around with fewer strokes.

Played Primm Valley (Lakes) for the second time this past Friday when driving home from a work trip in Las Vegas. Got out a bit early as the guy in the pro shop gave me the twilight rate with cart of $55, which is totally worth it for this fun course, even with re-seeding just a week or so away so they’re letting it dry out a bit.

Just an FYI, but the Desert course (which I wanted to play since I hadn’t before) is currently closed during re-seeding. Should be open in a few weeks when they close down the Lakes course.

As for the course itself, well you can imagine that just a week or so before major maintenance that they’ve let it go a good bit, but it’s still remarkably playable. There are a lot of dried out areas in the fairways and they’re certainly not a dark, lush green, but most lies were more than okay and not a problem to hit from at any time. The rough is a little thicker and greener right now and not penal. Bunkers were okay at this point and the tee boxes are a little bit beat up but nothing too terrible.

Greens were actually still in good shape for the most part, but there were many with large sections cut out of them ahead of the maintenance. They ran a bit slower than usual according to my local playing partner that I paired up with at the first tee, but I still found that they rolled quite true and held shots predominantly well. Good enough for the circumstances for sure.

Additional Thoughts

Layout is a super cool one with many interesting holes, lots of risk-reward opportunities and no two holes exactly alike. I like the variety of the par 3s and the par 5s are quite fun to play as well. You can score well here for sure, but you can also get in a lot of trouble. Oh hey, that sounds like golf.

I would definitely call ahead though to make sure that this or the other course are in play right now as aeration season begins. But if you do make it out, it’s still a fun day under the sun. And one last thing if Johnny is reading this review – Primm is in California, not Nevada!

Played on Saturday morning with an 8am tee time. POP was a very relaxed 3 hours. Check in was pleasant and quick and they brought a cart out to my car when I pulled in. After check in they told me to see the starter outside, but she was no where to be found. So I went to the first tee and took off by myself.

The fairways have a slightly brownish tint to them but was very lush and nice to play from. Noticed many unfilled divots and I used two bottles of sand during my round. Never affected any shots. Some soggy area’s, but not sure if it was from sprinklers or maybe an over night rain.

Rough was in decent shape and could be a factor in club selection. Most of the rough has hills and would be thick enough to stop the ball from rolling down to the fairways.

Tee boxes were a mixed bag, some thin, some needed mowing (especially the par three 12th which was like teeing up a ball in the rough).
Bunkers looked decent. Was in one fairway bunker and was nice to play out of. Very course sand with a few rocks.

Greens were medium fast and putted OK. Greens were difficult to read as the putts didn’t break as much as they looked. They are in a fight on the greens with another grass or fungus trying to take over. You can see where they have pulled up the patches of the grass or fungus.

I enjoyed the round and will return again soon….I hope.

The course was a little wet in most areas and the right side of hole 1 approach was saturated enough to have standing water despite being on a hill. Green speed displayed on the starters shed read 10’-10”, but I would say it was slower than that. No severe ball marks or damage of any kind on the greens or anywhere else. Many bunkers had to be drained and raked. I saw at least one Greenskeeper working on it; I was in several bunkers and mostly they were all drained and raked except maybe one left of hole 11. Tees were nice and level. Overall the course is in good winter condition with a mix of dormant warm season grasses and some greener poa and rye.

One of the best value courses around. Recommend you play it before aerification.
