Played here yesterday on a 12:50pm (twilight) tee-time with GK members Jon (jpeairs85) and Nat (molebio). It was a day of highs and lows, highlighted unfortunately by a round that we had to call after 15 holes at nearly 5 hours of play. I’ll rant at the end about that, but course conditions today were great with greens that were some of the finest I have seen outside of Rams Hill.

A more detailed description of those conditions

Golf Playing Conditions 8.07 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 8.07 GREAT

Tee-boxes: Nearly perfect. Lush, with deep forest green blades of grass immaculately cut. A varied mix of tee box options ensured that 95% of golfers wouldn’t destroy the same set of tees. Level ground that allowed for exact positioning of tee length.

Fairways: Amazing. They weren’t as green as one would hope after a rainy last month, but short of that they were perfect. A good seed/sod mix in every cart and conscientious golfers ensured a minimal amount of divots. The fairways offered a fair amount of roll and every shot seemed to have a great lie.

Rough: Almost not applicable. Anyone who has played this course knows the rough here isn’t what kills your game, its all the barrancas and Environmentally Sensitive Areas (ESA’s). The rough that does exist isn’t so penal you can’t scramble for bogey.

Bunkers: Was only in one bunker today, but the conditions were excellent. The sand consistency is what you would hope, especially after rain in the last week. Enough sand on the course to keep anyone humble. A good amount of rakes!

Greens: Like I mentioned, this was my first ever 10 on bunkers. They were glowing like emeralds and played with the speed of glass at times. The putting surface was smooth and outside of a few marks that went without fixing, they were perfect. I would come back just for another chance to make putts on them.

Parting Thoughts

This is a Troon facility that sadly felt a bit short of the expectations other courses like Classic Club and Yocha Dehe have established. Employees were helpful and nice, but a lack of marshals and all-around shortage of staff was noticeable. Carts were excellent with comfortable seats, great GPS, and a cooler with plenty of ice and water. Up to this point, all was good.

The real shame here today was the insanely slow pace of play. Frost delay or not (we couldn’t even get a straight answer about this), there is no excuse for a 3 hour front. There was perfect storm of first weekend without rain, slow players, people waiting unnecessarily, and stupidly walking to their balls even as carts were allowed everywhere but on the green! A real shame that some of the best holes we couldn’t ever get to on this day. If you can find a good deal, the course is only going to get better.

Day one of a two-day work trip out to the Phoenix area so we played Whirlwind first just an hour or so after getting off the plane. We were supposed to play the other 18 at this 36 hole facility, but it was even more crowded after a frost delay in the morning so we had the opportunity to get out on the Cattail 18 right away and took it.

It was a very cold and somewhat windy day so I’m not sure how much that factored into the day’s performance, but it was certainly something one doesn’t expect when playing out in Arizona. But it wasn’t raining so that was a nice change from LA of late. As for the course, really nice. I’m not sure if it’s quite the rack rate price nice (over $150), but it’s very close to that for sure.

It’s also a fun design with plenty of water in play, lots of risk-reward holes, some hilly areas but no major elevations, and lots of strategic placement off the tee that will require some assistance of the in-cart GPS. Conditions are pretty great all around, from the dark green fairways with great lies all day, to the super nice and glassy greens that were fast, true and held shots pretty well all day. Rough was a nice length to hit from and the bunkers and tee boxes were in very good shape as well. Really zero to complain about at all.

Practice range is grass with Callaway balls provided, plus there’s a large chipping and sand area right behind it to test your skills. No actual ‘turn’ on the Cattail course, so make sure you either have enough food and drink from the start, or good chance you’ll get cart service if it was around numerous times on a cold and windy Tuesday afternoon.

Overall, a really nice facility and a great day of golf, even if I did have to trade the hat for the beanie on the back nine and put on a third layer to fight the cold. I would love to come back here on a perfect AZ spring day.

Played Tuesday, 2/19, teeing off about 12:20pm as a foursome. POP 4:45, waiting on the two groups in front at times.

Friendly staff, as always. We had some issue with two threesomes in front when they would ‘join up’ as a Six-some at times (8th/9th holes, 11th hole). Marshall came by as we were approaching the green on 11, and though he said they shouldn’t do that (he was very familiar with them, telling me they play Black Gold all the time), he wasn’t too bothered by this news when I told him. Sensing we were going to be dealing with that the rest of the way, I took the liberty to suggest that it was his job to stop them from doing that, and keep POP up. 😀 Guess he took it to heart, as he did circle back and likely said something to them. Starting on the 14th hole, they stopped that nonsense.

Despite the recent rains, the course remains in pretty darn good condition, not much different from my visit at the end of Jan. Biggest differences were the tee boxes are washed out a bit, thinner and grayer, and bunkers were certainly damp.

Fairways were nicely cut, lush, and still provided decent roll. Slight water damage around the edges here and there, and a few extra parts of fairways were roped off, including all of #12 and #15, which tends to be CPO often. Rough wasn’t onerous, but long in a few areas where I guess they hadn’t cut in a few days.

Greens were lovely and rolled very smooth, at a medium-fast pace.

Cart girl came by often and added cheer on a lovely, sunny Taco Tuesday.

With the Yorba Linda City Championship coming up in March, I’d expect the course to continue to be in very good/great condition in the coming weeks.

Had a playing lesson this morning 2/19/2019. Cooler morning with beautiful skies. Crowded course this morning for a Tuesday morning. I am impressed with the new management. Since I have played here last they continue to make improvements to areas just in front of tees, around trees, etc.

The Review

The greens were in great shape. They look quicker than they putted. They putted very smoothly. Would say maybe a 10 on the stimp. Very few ball-marks but some foot traffic around some of the holes. Gil Hanse architect of this beauty created huge putting surfaces here with some undulation. Staff can put the pins in 6-7 different locations to challenge lag putting here. Greens held shots like darts and were in very good shape. Highlight of the course. Rated 8/10.

All bunker complexes have newer white sand put in within the last year. My student was in bunkers on 12 and 16 and I was in the bunker on 17–they are all in great shape. Soft sand that you need to thump. Rated 8/10.

The fairway grass is slowly coming back into shape. I saw more green grass. There is still some underlying mud and wet spots from the recent rains. In the coming weeks I can see the grass really growing in and getting better. Current fairway rating 6/10.

Tees for the most part were OK. They should look at leveling the par 5 5th hole tee box.

Rough was muddy and spotty but in not too bad of shape. Mowers were out cutting the grass this morning.

My student and I really enjoyed the day here. Great staff, great prices, nice greens and sand conditions. Fairway conditions will be improving each day with all the rains we received.

Recommended.

Day two of our Phoenix swing landed us at the Coore-Crenshaw designed We-Ko-Pa Saguaro course. There was another crazy frost delay that pushed back our start time, but once we got rolling, it turned into a gorgeous, somewhat brisk winter day in the northeast of Phoenix.

All the tough hallmarks of the CC-design team are on full display here. Almost every single hole has hidden dangers and requires precision off the tee. There are plenty of blind tee shots over large desert waste areas, and fairways can be very tight with plenty of tall cacti near the tee boxes showing ball damage from those that failed to find the target. If you’re not confident off the tee, you’re going to struggle here.

But of course they also throw in a fair number of shorter par 4s to give you hope, while most of the par 3s are very manageable with the exception of the very tough long and downhill 15th. And if you want to see one of the toughest closers around, 18 on Saguaro will most certainly do the trick.

The Review

Great conditions from tee to green as well. Greens were super fast, glassy and rolled very true. Certainly plenty of tough angles to manage, but nothing too gimmicky or crazy in terms of slopes. Green-side bunkers are brutal though so avoid at all costs. But the sand is good, as are the very green and inviting fairways. Rough is a pleasure to hit from, but there’s just not a lot of it to go around. Rough tends to be somewhat dormant where it exists, but if you’re off the fairway here, you’re basically in the desert. Tee boxes are great.

Cart service was phenomenal and frequent throughout the day as well, and POP was pretty well managed despite the frost delay chaos earlier in the day. We waited on a few of the holes on the back nine, but generally moved pretty well all day, even passing the group in front of us on the back nine when they stopped to eat. We were all business.

Final Word

Great practice facility as well to help you warm up. Top-notch course in every facet. Make it happen if you get the chance.

Walked 2/16/19 as big rains this week had the course soggy and cart path only restrictions. Tournament play with lift clean and place through the green. Rain/hail on one hole otherwise partly cloudy breezy.

Overall course is in the usual great shape and will improve as it dries out. All tee boxes immaculate and greens good rolling medium speed due to wetness. Bunkers real nice no issues maintained nicely.

Always enjoy playing here and was helped by the lift clean and place in the thicker rough many times. Embedded balls were also a factor. The new drop rule for OB instead of provisional ball helped too.

Was great seeing mpisarski01, kviser, larryq2001, dsal_13 and Mattias. Put this round together on late notice and really appreciate those that could join me. I want to find a way to get together with GK’ers on just about every weekend. For me, as brutal as the high winds, cold temps, wet conditions, excruciating slow pace (due to a tournament) and very poor play on my part was … awesome time as always with GK’ers! Afterwards kviser, Mattias and I went over to the Ventura Harbor for some clam chowder and beers. Golf is best with friends no matter. Thank You.

The Review

The course, greens in very nice condition, running mostly smooth, fast (can only imagine how fast they will be when they dry out more) and holding shots. I found many bunkers and they were all in good shape. Was impressed how well they had drained. No standing water and not that moist. Fairways are Bermuda turf with sprinkles of Poa dotted only because of the wet winter season, come late spring, summer and fall when they are in season, they should be beautiful. Rough is a mixture of many grasses and varying in length, had many experiences due to being wild off the tee, it’s pretty easy to escape from. Tee boxes thin, level with some divot damage (we played the blue tees).

With the high winds coming off the ocean from the NW holes 1, 2, 6, 8, 13, 15 are super tough into the wind. Holes 7 and 12 have large water hazards on the right so that wind can grab your ball and easily deposit it into the drink. Holes 17 and 18 play straight downwind so that’s a nice almost too little too late breather. I love this layout. It destroys me just about every time. I’ve played it well over 20 times and have only had a couple great performances. I’ll be back for sure to take it on again.

Played Spyglass this morning while Mickelson and Casey finished up their little match around the corner. Traffic was a zoo inside Pebble but that was my only complaint for the entire day. Weather was absolutely gorgeous with sunny skies and virtually no wind. This is the first time I’ve played The Glass when it hasn’t been cool, damp and foggy.

As mentioned before, Spyglass is all about the golf. Make that about great golf! No fancy hotel or clubhouse. Just great course conditions mixed in with a picturesque setting. Yes the first 5 holes are right on the ocean, but there are plenty of views of the pacific from other holes. Who knew? With the sun out the views of the pacific through the Del Monte Forest are numerous. It was a bit of an offshore breeze so the sound of the waves crashing down below were absent, but still no complaints.

As far as course conditions go. It’s exactly what you would expect from a world class and PGA tour worthy course. Greens were excellent rolling at a medium fast pace. With all the rain, they were super soft easily holding shots. Fairways were lush and surprisingly dry for the most part. They too were soft offering little roll out.

Rough was rough!! very wet, muddy, dense and tall. A two club difference in some cases and a minimum of one extra club in all situations.

Tee boxes and sand traps were also of top notch.

Spyglass has all the ingredients for the making of a top course. Ocean front holes, pristine conditions, elevations changes throughout, 4 water hazards to negotiate on the course and good solid customer service throughout.

A very enjoyable walk and obviously highly recommended.
