Played this course on Sunday, June 2nd for $16 at 10:15 am with a booked threesome. This course does have a practice range, putting greens without a chipping green and some water/drinks prior to heading to the first tee. We checked in with ease as the cart guys offered us our carts.  When we approached the first tee we were notified a single had just booked last second with us and we were off.

The Review

The course was set up (from tips it plays 6,224, ladies at 4,774) fast and firm from tee to green. The tee boxes were trimmed well and allowed any peg in the ground and didn’t have much visible wear (yet, it’s early in the summer season). The fairways were green and bounced well with a limited amount of approach-shot divots. The rough and surrounding areas weren’t anything to hide your golf ball from but they did impact the spin into the green, which was very important taking into account the greens.

NOW, for the greens. First off, this is a retirement “resort” for snowbirds and the older crowd with cheap prices, however these greens were amazing. Fast (at least an 11 on the stimp by my reckoning) and firm.  No wedge I hit made an indentation on approach no matter how high I hit them. Every putt was true and tough.  The slope on some of the pin placements may have been illegal but playing on these greens made for a fun day.

Personal Thoughts

I’ve written a review each of the past two years for this course. Unfortunately no other Greenskeeper member other than myself has written a review for this course.  It’s a value oriented course — you get mileage for the money you spend here.  The price, the time it takes to play 18 on a Sunday with a foursome playing from 3 different tees (under 4 hours) and the ease of which an enjoyable round appears is outstanding. I’ve played my handful of Nationally recognized courses in Arizona and other states.  Most notably I’ve played in South Carolina, the mecca for great courses.  However I find myself continually smiling as I leave from this course due to its staff, quality of shape and price.

Play this course, shoot low and enjoy a day in east-ish Mesa.

Played June 2, 3, 4 all competitive rounds. My first since the 2013 renovations. In a word:  Immaculate.  All aspects of the course in top shape. Large greens with four hole locations designed for elite level tournaments will met that description.

Water (pond) on left side of hole 1. There are a few other lateral hazards on the edges. And I need to mention the area in front of 18 too. It’s muddy and long grass in there not impossible to play out of but not where you want to be.

Spinning iron shots & chips will certainly help your approach shots to the undulating greens. Running in shots without spin need precise distance control or else they are not stopping.

Bunkers are in great shape consistent white sand and many holes have waste areas of darker sand bordered by tall fescue grasses.

Customer service great friendly staff and food is good. Everything you’d expect of a top notch golf facility.

Final Thought

End Note: 3 round scores all the same and about a dozen higher than what I’d consider a good score on a less demanding track.  Recommend 5 of 5 stars

The last couple years many golfers have passed on playing Sterling Hills despite it’s great layout due to poor playing conditions (me included) … I am very happy to report not only are those days gone due to new ownership but the golf course is currently in very good shape. So much so, I’m making it my home course.

Had a blast out there Tuesday 6/11 and only see turf improvements continuing. It’s a closer drive for me than the Ventura/Oxnard courses from Thousand Oaks plus better weather. I think anyone coming over the 101 Camarillo grade to tee it up should be consider playing it. They got great deals which include cart and a quality lunch entrée for less than most standard green fees in the region. This place is a steal.

Greens are in excellent shape. Smooth, medium/fast and holding shots. Fairways provide great lies with only occasional bare spots which most bare spots have been re-sodded, rough is mostly lush, tee boxes in good shape and bunkers not great but certainly playable with mostly firm sand (they are planning on doing some greenside bunker improvements with new sand). During August/September the fairways will struggle due to some of the cool climate turf they are phasing out but in general all other aspects of the golf course should be better.

Golf Playing Conditions 8.30 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 8.30 GREAT

On a trip up through Northern California, we stopped at Links of Rolling Hills. Was checking weather.com as it had been raining but was supposed to stop around 10:30 so we got a tee time at 11:20. Well they were a bit off on the weather as we ended up teeing off in light rain and cold wind.

It finally cleared up around the 6th hole and was beautiful on the back 9. Paid the rack rate of $50 and as a two-some, we finished in just under 4.5 hours.

Really slowed down on #8 as we came to a complete halt. We waited over 15 minutes on the tee. The group behind us got very impatient and encouraged us to join the 2 some ahead of us. I said no as that wasn’t the reason why it got slow so I guess that ticked them off and they decided to call the clubhouse to complain. Hey chill out! Their complaint resonated throughout the course as many of the course staff became aware. Course staff came out to move things along and talked to us on the course. Great staff work but was unnecessary. The back 9 moved just fine and the group behind us fell way back. Great playing back there guys!! OK enough of the sarcasm.

The Review

The course is in good shape. Fairways are recovering from the winter but still great lies in the fairways. The rough was thick but playable as I don’t think they were able to cut it with the rain that has come through. You cannot be wide here with your drive. Very thick native areas border all of the fairways and balls that go in there are lost. Bunkers were in good shape. Despite the rain, they played well.

The greens were in great condition and rolled very true despite the rain.

I really like playing here. It’s a beast and easy to lose balls but is still fun to play. Not a typical course with numerous trees. To the contrary, no trees but rolling fairways. I played well on this day but only because I didn’t go in the native areas.

Parting Thoughts

FYI, they also have a nice casino and we stopped in to have a few beers and drop a few at the tables. Look forward to coming back. Definitely recommend!!

Played yesterday.

First off and done in 2.5 hours (glad of that, it was packed when we finished).  Played under cloudy skies (and no wind) which cleared up after 9, allowing one to see the beautiful Morro Bay views.

This is a course I could play many times during the week, if I lived in the area. Truly a beautiful layout and superbly maintained.

The Review

Tee boxes were spotless. Fairways were mowed, clean and provided great lies and roll, all round. Rough was not tall/penal and was playable. Greens were perfect and after reading the previous review and following the instructions, I had an enjoyable round of golf.

It is like playing 2 different courses (IMO).

The front 9 is above the clubhouse, with elevation changes and the back 9 is across the road and below the clubhouse and much flatter from tee to green.

Customer service was excellent at all levels.

They are even running a special every day (including weekends) for $13 after 3 PM. With the long days and no doubt sunny skies in the afternoon, this would be a great play. And don’t be afraid of the huge wild turkeys (the ones with 2 legs) that roam the property. And when I say huge, I mean huge.

Final Thought

Highly recommended when in the area.

Played in a tournament on 6/1. Beautiful sunny day with a Pace of Play (PoP) of 5+ hours. Very traditional course with no tricked-up holes, very little water and only slight elevation changes. Sounds a bit boring, but it’s not. The placement of trees/bunkers, the rough & smallish, undulating greens make it interesting & a very good test of golf.

Golf Playing Conditions 9.53 IMMACULATE

After the copious amounts of rain this winter/spring, the course is in great shape: Very green & lush. Being a high-end resort course, you expect stellar conditions & this course delivers. Fairways, rough, bunkers, tee boxes & greens are all in great to excellent condition. The rough was the biggest surprise. It is fairly short & seems benign, but turned out to be very penal. Super thick & snarly, it would just grab your club & send the ball in all kinds of directions & much shorter than you intended. The greens firmed up as the day progressed & were rolling medium/Fast and true.

The service was great from check-in to the end & the Cart-person was out all round.

On a side note – they have the Hot Dog Bill’s famous “BurgerDog” at the snack shack between Holes 7 & 8.

Currently, it is the only other place besides Olympic Club you can get one. Simple, yet delicious! Great course & definitely in prime shape right now.

Golf Playing Conditions 7.24 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.24 GREAT

Played in my first GK outing on 6/9/19. Great time on a great golf course and we meet some really nice guys out there. I look forward to playing more events and returning to this gem of a golf course.

Since so many others have reviewed this course and rated it recently I just wanted to add a couple of observations. Conditions were very good throughout and I agree the bunkers need more consistency. Many high lips on the traps made it difficult to get the ball close from tight/inconsistent lies. The greens rolled great with very few bumps. Repaired ball marks were prominent which shows that players were respectful of others by repairing them. I had no issues with the fairways and tees.

Played again on Monday walking and this is a great course to walk. We finished in 4 hours with no waiting after playing through a slow foursome. One thing I think need to be addressed here would be to have sand carriers on the pull carts and perhaps stations near the landing areas. I did see many unrepaired divots in the fairways which can only be attributed to walkers not having sand the fill them.
