Played our GK Cup match on Sunday at Mile Square and were treated to a course that is in nice shape thanks to all the recent rains and a fun, yet fairly straightforward layout. Blue tees play to 6700 yards so it’s definitely got a lot of long par 4s to challenge you. Fairways are mostly pretty wide open, but there are healthy trees lining most every hole and a few water features on the back nine to contend with on the day.

FYI, if you’re one of those players that likes to rent a push cart, well, they have very old-timey pull carts here with the minimalist of frills that you can get for $10 and they reimburse you $5 after you bring back the handle after your round.

The Review

Right now the fairways and rough are in nice shape with good to lush coverage in most all areas. A few thin spots here and there but mostly good times ahead. Bunkers had nice sand in them but it was made tough by the moist conditions following the morning dew that never seemed to burn off until the end. Tee boxes were flat but a little beat up and in need of some minor attention.

The greens were a spotty mix of colors but actually held shots nicely and rolled pretty true all day. They were medium to medium-fast speed all throughout the round, but are not so tricked out that it creates any major problems. Some ball marks to deal with for sure, but no major complaints.

No cart service all day which was a bit strange for a busy Sunday, but the POP was great as we found a sweet spot with the 7:07 tee time and never really waited throughout the entire round, nor were we dutifully pushed hard by any of the groups behind us. Really worked out great in that respect, probably finishing in right around 4-4.5 hours. Ideal pace.

Final Thought

Shame to hear that they’ll be closing one of the two 18s at Mile Square some time this or next year, but I understand that it’ll be the Players closing its doors, so we’ll still have access to this very nice Classic 18 for many years to come.

Excellently run GK Event once again. Teed off right on time at about 1:20 pm, with the weather cooperating. Hot but not too hot with enough breeze to feel nice while less than a club at most. POP was good also at 4:20. The facilities were first rate. Nice clubhouse, helpful staff, good restaurant. The range area was small and the targets were few, but it was grass.

Apparently, there was a NCGA Amateur net qualifier that morning. The pin positions reflected that. Some tough blue positions, such as 15 and 18. Tough greens for that matter. I agree the course should be rated higher, at least as to slope. Some unforgiving greens and rough. The ball tended to roll and many times thought might have stopped short of a hazard to find that the ball had rolled much farther than I had expected. The fairways were nice though. Tight lies but nothing bare. The primary rough was not that much of a factor. Outside the grass was generally brutal. Had a couple of unexpected good lies but losing the ball was more usual.

I liked greens even though they were tough to read and double breaking putts were regular. Tough to get the speed right too. They were definitely interesting. Also, usually rolling up, links style, was an option (note Rob’s 60-yard putt for an epic up and down) but getting the ball to stop in the correct level was very difficult. The bunkers were not so great. The fairway bunkers were rock hard with some dirt clods. The green-side ones had sand but the hitting surface was hit and miss. Had one lousy lie in a depression. No footprints though, which was nice to see. Respect the game.

Final Thoughts

It was a course where local knowledge was a premium. We were lucky to have Darren to let us know where to aim on the more confusing holes. Some very intimidating views from the tees but generally there were generous landing areas. I had fun and it seemed the others did also no matter what the course threw at us. Overall, a well designed course and a fun day.

Customer service was outstanding from the check in at the pro shop, to the starter and cart return person.

Course was in perfect shape. Tee boxes and fairways were like carpets. Rough was lush and the greens were very smooth. I highly recommend this course. It is in fantastic shape right now. The ocean views are so spectacular on every hole.

Enjoy!

A freak cold spell and summer prices are recipe for a good time. Snagged the 4:50 tee time for $25 and only saw 1 other group the whole round. I had tried to play here last summer. Due to excessive heat and terribly slow play I bailed after nine wand left with a sour taste in my mouth.

This course is a tale of two nines. The front nine is average and too short and congested in my opinion. It is solid but nothing memorable. But wow, the back nine ranks easily the best in the valley. The view from the 10th tee is spectacular. Holes 12, 14, and 16 are awesome holes. Top notch desert golf behind the rugged backdrop of the nearby mountain. 14 is a top hole in Phoenix in my opinion. After being eased to the finish with easier straight forward holes 18 is a great finisher.

The greens were near perfect. Firm and quick but not too fast. Very few ball marks. Sand was great. A little coarse and scare in some but mostly consistent. Holes were fun because you get great member bounces off the raised edges and the grass was mown thin so the balls collected down in the fairways. Some of the fairways have some small arears under repair. Looks like some minor resoding is nearing completed in some small areas. Fairways had many brown spots, but to be expected leading into summer.

Great conditions at an awesome value. Eagle Mountain back is spectacular I want to be back. I would rank it as a tamer more player friendly SunRidge Canyon with more extreme desert style golf holes.

With a schedule change I was able to play one more time in Texas. This place is a golfers paradise if you like secluded courses. I loved it.

The greens were almost fully recovered from being punched. The fairways and rough were Goose Creek like…superb condition. The course is very fair but lethal if you spray (like I did) it too far off line. On some holes there can be really tricky pin placements. Some of the greens have a lot of undulation. The carts where brand new. The staff was friendly. The golfers quickly let me play through. The range was nice. The chipping and putting greens were elaborate.

The tiny log cabin pro shop was unique. I have got to come out and play here again before our move is final. Oh and I over-clubbed a lot early on. The 95 degree heat made the ball really fly.

Played today. Weather was comfortably warm. Conditions pretty darn consistently good. For those that know me, this course is one of my favorite because it’s fairly straightforward with great bones. Add some great conditions and this is the makings of a great golf experience locally.

Greens were firm. Held their line well. The pin placements were difficult but fair. I had a blast trying to figure out the breaks. The practice greens reflect what to expect on the course. Fairways had great coverage with a nice cushion underneath. Rough cut to the approximately the same height as the fairways. Bunkers were well stocked with sand.

Course was busy but moving. Consistent conditions was a nice surprise. Dare I say it rivals its neighbor down the street.

All told, I was pleased with the round. Throw in that GK has two GK Coupons I think it’s a good deal. Download your GK Coupon for free and enjoy some really good golf.

Played BG on Tuesday after Memorial Day. Was a slow afternoon, was sent to the tee early, and went off on my own at 2:12pm. Eventually, invited two friendly guys to join me on the 14th tee, one of whom is a GKer I played a few holes with here, ironically, near exactly a year ago…see you next year, jjrauen! POP overall was just 3.5hrs.

Fairways and greens were lush and green and the best part of the course. Never had a bad lie in the fairways and got decent roll for the most part. Greens were firm, very, very smooth putting and looked fantastic. Pace was good, just about medium speed, but not slow.

Tees were very good, plenty of coverage and mostly level, but did not appear to be cut in the morning. Visited 4 traps, each had good sand and decent lies, but each had evidence of multiple un-raked prior visits, marring their sanctity.

Course continues to be in very playable condition – highly recommend right now. Which, by the way, they have proudly displayed a GK award that says just that… in the lobby near the pro shop!

Enjoyed a nice sunny day at Eagle Springs before my afternoon bike ride. This is a fun course set in the hills just outside of Fresno. Track has lot’s of elevation changes and a few water hazards to complement the fun and challenge. There are also a lot very strategically placed trees that make hitting the correct side of the fairway for proper approach angle key. Greens are medium sized with some having moderate slope and undulations and others with severe. Greens roll at a medium-slow pace but are soft and hold shots well.

Fairways have some brown areas but they are lush throughout regardless of color. The rough was brutal. Not very tall but definitely thick and penal. No issues with the tee boxes. Level and lush though they seemed to have more brown spots than the fairways.
Sand traps were ok to need improvement. One had numerous rocks and pebbles in it.

I’m started to think the POP is SLOW here. Course doesn’t see much play but those who are out there TAKE THEIR TIME. 4 1/2+ hour rounds when there is less than 20 total players out on the course is brutal. But it did cut my bike ride down to 3 hours… but that’s a story for a different day.

Cart gal was out and about all day and staff in the pro shop and restaurant were very friendly. As stated before, Eagle Springs is a solid choice when in the Fresno area. Just don’t expect it to be a quick round.
