Oak creek has amazing personnel working for them. Everyone is very accommodating and helpful. Their cart GPS system is the best I have ever seen; akin to the touch screen on a Tesla since it is huge and in the middle of the cart. The driving range here has been grass every time I have played the course but it is super expensive! Pro-tip: make sure to let them know you are playing that day and you get the “member” price for range balls.

Greens:

Rolled super true but slower than I would have hoped. Their practice green near the starter was at a totally different speed than the front 9 greens.

Fairways:

The fairways were firm but soft enough to get really nice crisp iron shots with nice shallow divots. Nothing too tricky on any of the tee shots into the fairways, however there are a few speed slots that exist (#10 up the right) that I am still trying to figure out. Great coverage on the fairways with no real divot issues.

Bunkers:

Bunkers were definitely penal today. The fairway bunkers were wet on the front 9 and fluffy on the back 9 (temperate swing from 65 at tee off to about 85 by hole 10). A lot of the green-side bunkers were labelled as ground-under-repair and roped off so I do not have any information on those other than they looked to be in excellent shape so I am not sure what their intention was with the Ground Under Repair (GUR.)

Tee Boxes:

Flat with good grass coverage. Some areas were a bit torn up on the par 3s but that is to be expected when their par 3s are long or have a lot of trouble so people hit multiple shots (as we witnessed by watching the group in front of us hit almost every tee shot on each hole.)

Rough:

About 1.5-2″ long. Depending on how it was sitting, the rough was deep/thick enough to produce dead shots or snap a club face closed.

Overall:

Great course and a fun layout. Definitely a great course to try but make sure to keep an eye out for deals!

Golf Playing Conditions 7.07 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.07 GREAT

Going to reiterate most of my review from last week when I played here with exception that it was in even better shape. Conditions simply are vastly improved from the previous ownership. This golf course is now in great shape. Especially the greens and fairways (you heard right, the fairways). Only blemish is the bunkers sand yet not terrible and certainly playable.

Played with GK’ers GDR23, rgm2525 and abbacat on Monday 6/17 teeing off at 10:40am. Wendy played the forward tees while Gary, Ron and I played the tips. This is a very challenging Par 71, measuring over 6800 yards from the black tees.

I enjoyed stepping back for a change but next time out going to play the blues tees there. I posted photos from my rounds 6/11 and 6/17 so you can see the layout. It’s got it all with a great variety of holes.

Greens are tricky, undulating and shaped so the pins can be tucked away. They are all well-guarded green complexes.

Tee shots are very demanding requiring shaping the ball around big trees at times and avoiding some hazards. Approach shots are mostly to elevated greens making this layout even longer. However there is nothing unfair about it and it’s a blast to play.

After the round Gary had to take off to get back to the Golf Development Complex for lesson but Ron, Wendy and I had a bite to eat that comes with your round. Nice selection on the lunch menu which come with chips. Good grub.

Highly recommended especially with the GK Coupon deal.

Golf Playing Conditions 8.53 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 8.53 GREAT

Played 6/4, walked as a single 7:30, not too many people on the course before 8.

Really liked this course, and could see this as my home course if I lived here.

Course is in great shape. Interesting course that meanders back and forth across a valley.  Essentially sweeping elevation changes and the course goes up and down the valley. It has some great views of the Sisters and Broken Top peaks.

Greens stimped about a 10. I played the 6500 yd layout (second from the back), and if I could do it again, I’d play the Blue/white combo of about 6300.  There are some really really long holes on the 6500 yd layout.  A 616 par 5, some 200 yd par 3s.

Bottom-line, if you are looking for a reprieve from resort triple digit green fees, Juniper will give you a good time.

Played Sat 6/1, 7am, first off: 3:30 round walking. Missed the GK plays, but was able to get here a few weeks later.

I really enjoyed the layout. It has a lot of links style routing.

The greens were running fast… and newer greens are near impossible to hold… so you do have to play some roll-out.

I feel that if you replaced the Oakland Airport with the Pacific Ocean, you’d have a legit $200+ course. That stretch of back 9 that abuts against the airport are some quality holes.

There are some elevation changes, quite a few uneven lies… I think it’s #12… a beast of a par 4 hole uphill. Easy walk.

Will try to play this one again.

Golf Playing Conditions 8.09 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 8.09 GREAT

Played on Friday, 6/7, for the start of Matt’s birthday bash. Everything is what you would expect for a course charging $230 a round. Tee boxes were better than most courses’ fairways. Most fairways were lush and carpet like (except for a handful that had been aeration). Rough was up around 2 inches and not very penal. Greens were smooth and medium-fast.

The employees were great. Awesome bartender, fantastic starter, and the staff at the halfway house was great. Carts are high end with GPS to the hole and multiple USB plugs. There’s a phone and full menu on the 9th tee to call in orders to the halfway house on the 10th tee box (pro tip: breakfast burrito is not on the menu but they’ll make a very tasty one). Cool trick: the 9th straddles the state-line, so you tee in California and putt out in Nevada.

It’s a great, fun course to play. Not a big fan of trees in the fairways (approach into 11, tee shot on 16), and there’s a few around the greens that make you alter your shot. Definitely a splurge course, and not an every trip to Tahoe course.

**It rated out to 7.8, should be closer to 8.3

Played Rustic Canyon for the 1st time on Monday 6/3 after work ($24 to ride). Teed off around 5:15 with another single and was hoping to fly through the course. That wasn’t the case on the front 9. For a Monday afternoon it was crowded!

The Review

Golf Playing Conditions 7.62 GREAT

Besides that, it is an absolutely amazing course. The tee boxes were in good shape (a lot of divots as it was late in the day, but full grass coverage and it was easy to find a good place to tee up). The fairways were mowed short but fully covered and never had a bad or bare lie in the fairway. They were firm! Ball rolled out quite a bit.
Greens were in great shape. Firm, fast, rolled true. They are VERY contoured and challenging. The negative on the greens is that there are a LOT of unfixed ball marks. (editorial – come on guys and gals! Fix your ball marks! It’s a badge of honor to have to pull that tool out of your pocket. even if you miss the green pull it out and fix a couple!!!).

The course is absolutely gorgeous. It’s set back in the hills and leaves a lot of the local terrain untouched. The holes are creative and enjoyable. It is BY FAR the best value I have ever seen in golf. If you dropped this into Orange County or farther south in LA county it would be $75+ to play it.

Bottom-line

TLDR – Course is amazing and in great shape! Get out and play before it gets too hot!

Editor’s Note:  TLDR = “Too Long, Didn’t Read” for long posts….

Walked the Golds (6337/70.9/130) with RGM2525 in 4H early morning. The front 9 was “hit it and hope” because of thick fog. Visibility was maybe 50 yards when we started and was up to a hazy 175 yards by the end of the front 9. It ended up being a nice day, fairly calm, around 75 and partly cloudy. However, $69 to walk on a Wednesday morning was sticker shock!

The Review

Golf Playing Conditions 7.18 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.18 GREAT

The tees were okay, mostly level with many needing some divot love.

The fairways were good to play from. Semi lush with a good cushion.

The rough was hit and miss. Close to the fairway was not very high, but there is plenty of thick/deep native rough to avoid here.

The sand traps were wet but played okay. I sampled more than my share during the period we were hitting in the “general direction” of the green due to the lack of visibility.

The large Poa greens putted medium fast & were firm. Very nice! Very undulating greens even when they appeared to be fairly flat, difficult to read subtle breaks.

Bottom-line

It had been almost 8 years since I last played here. They have reversed the 9’s. Overall, excellent course and layout. Good customer service from all encountered. Recommended.
