Played Friday, 5/10, with a 10:30ish tee time. Joined Famed02 and 2 of his buddies on a fantastic Vegas day, slight breeze, temps barely hitting 80*. Teed off on time and finished at exactly 4 hours.

After my last experience at Chimera a few years ago, I’ve intentionally avoided going back. A late invite and no other tee times planned (overnight and early morning rain), I decided to give Chimera a chance to redeem herself and I’m pretty glad I did.

The Review

Golf Playing Conditions 7.70 GREAT

Conditions were outstanding. Tee boxes need some leveling, but mostly divot free. Fairways were lush but a bit wet, and green from tee to green. Rough was about a few inches and the ball would settle down, making it difficult to advance it. Bunkers were wet but it did rain overnight. Greens were smooth, medium fast, with a light dressing on them.

Service is saved by the outstanding F&B staff. Drink cart with specials and a bar/grill that specializes in excellent tasting pizza, staffed by friendly staff. Outside staff was non-existent, I saw them but never encountered them. Carts are upgraded above basic, with overhead bids, USB ports, and a great GPS system with distance to hazards, hole, and other carts on the hole (very underrated especially on a course with some blind shots).

The only sore point for me was the price, $60 for residents. The course is nice, but nothing really stands out about it outside of the approach shot to the 9th green (over water with a waterfall to the left). It’s a Ted Robinson Jr design that feels like other Robinson Family designs, like Rhodes Ranch with more elevated changes and less dramatic par 3s. I’m a huge fan of making the par 3s different, but all 3 of the 4 here felt identical and #17 was a close cousin with only water to the right added to change it up. I used the same club on all 4 holes.

Parting Shot

Would I play here again? Yes, but maybe only twice a year, due to the rates and the drive across town for me.

5/11/19 mid afternoon Saturday round in perfect weather. This is a older military course turned city or county muni and holds on to it’s AF roots with tees named Bomber Navigator Mustang and water stations “hydration hangers” the tee makers shaped like bombs.

Older design good shape overall and a decent $35 rate with cart. Greens good to very good rolling medium slow a few unrepaired ball marks. Consistent and full no bare spots. Fairways good tight lies rough not overly penal, tee boxes a bit shaggy but playable.

Bunkers ok seems like a lot of courses are not maintaining bunkers as well as they have in years past. Played three days in a row and the public course bunkers seem average to less at best. Don’t find many prepped with a machine drag or raking for consistency.

Good day beer cold service great. Course seemed busy but starter said it was a bit slow for the perfect weather and course conditions. We played as a twosome following many groups and were at that pace all day to the 4 1/2+ hr POP too slow for me but had to get a match in. You can score here with a decent game of which I didn’t have this day.

Recommend and a follow-up review coming a 5/25 return planned.

I got out Friday, 5/10 as part of a threesome with single joining us. I hadn’t been out to SA since last June according to my score tracker. I think this was mainly because it had gotten bit dried out last summer and then seemed to be suffering a bit through the winter — at least according to reviews. In fact, the latest review from a little less than a month ago was pretty negative.

The Review

For whatever reason, I had stayed away more than usual, so I was curious and game to take a look after all the course-improving weather we’ve had. Basically, I was not disappointed instead I was pleasantly surprised. If I was to focus on the weak point first, I would say there are some scattered thin / scruffy patches to be found on many fairways. I mention it but it factored little into my round. They are scattered and not a dominant feature. The great majority of fairway is filled in with green and good lies to be had. I missed the bunkers but they looked OK. Otherwise, good stuff.

Playing from the whites, tees here are pretty level with good coverage and I don’t recall any distracting issues about any aspect of teeing it up. Of particular note were the greens, which have been slagged in reviews for their condition and speed. I found them as good as I’ve seen them in a while, clean with a medium quick speed that was very nice and probably about as speedy as they get there. There were a lot of pin locations conspicuously near the edges of the greens and I don’t know why. That did not particularly bother me but I found it interesting. You have to put them somewhere, and sometimes that made it more challenging, but other times not so much.

Parting Thoughts

As someone who comes here regularly if not overly frequently, I thought it was about as good as can be expected and really enjoyed getting back to it. One of our threesome had never played SA and came a away enthusiastic to return to it again soon. On top of everything, I got out walking (1:50-ish tee time) for $22 which was excellent value for this course right now. Recommended.

5/12/19 early out on a sunny cool morning start. Golf Moose special rate for two plus the early weekend start time extra fee. Worth the rate. My kind of golf, set the brisk pace let a couple singles through. 3.5 or less POP
Course condition is in good to better than good right now. I read the older reviews here and didn’t know what to expect as I have not been here for a couple years. Happy to report that course is playable and fun. “new” management in third year doing good job.

Greens good to better than that rolling med to slow holding lines not to undulating medium sized mostly. The cart paths are a little confusing at times (front going to 4th tee and to 7th) and the back (12th to 13th and sight line for tee shot on this par 5) Your eye sees the 14th green straight out but the hole doglegs over the right sand trap. Green keeper helped get us reacquainted. Good mix of shorter longer holes. Fairways good rough maintained and the bunkers OK with material but need TLC to fluff up in my opinion for more consistency.

Friendly staff well stocked 19th Hole.

Out of the way course unless you live in the area. River levee, and surrounding walnut farms borders course nearby rice patties are seen driving in from east.

A fun easier track went here to build confidence to elevate my game for the more golf challenges to come this spring summer. Did that; Recommend.

Had a 10:45 tee time on 5/7. Teed off right on time with another single and a twosome. They spaced the tee times decently, so it took us a couple holes to catch the group ahead. We had one very deliberate player in our group and I think the group ahead of us left after nine (or stopped for a long break at the turn) because by the back nine it was pretty wide open. Did my best to push my group along. Ultimately, it was just an OK 4:10 pace. $44 rate with cart.

The course was in good overall condition. Every time I’ve ever driven by here on the freeway, it always looks so lush and pure. It wasn’t quite that nice up close and personal, but it was still in well above average “muni” shape. Some weak spots here and there, but mostly quite good from tee to green. Bunkers solid and greens pretty nice. Soft and rolling well at medium speeds.

This is a decent layout. Mostly what you see is what you get on the front nine, though there are quite a few water hazards in play. The back nine gets more interesting with some tighter angles and doglegs. Pretty traditional design to satisfy the masses. Prices can run a little high here because it is in the East Bay and I’m sure they draw a lot of after-work traffic when the 580 is backed up (which is always). A good walking course without many hills to contend with.

Played the Babe on 05-10-19 at 6:10 am. I thought the course was in great shape.

Tee boxes had good coverage and level. Fairways very good with nice grass. Bunkers in good shape.

The greens were excellent. Held shots very well and putted smoothly with good speed.

Pace of play was 3.5hrs. Pro shop was great also.

If I could change one thing, it would be opening up the range earlier. If your going to let players out before the sun comes up, open your beautiful lighted range for them. Have fun.

I played Wolf Creek on 4-28-19. This was the highlight of my golf weekend with Bill, Kathy and Dixie. I had wanted to play here ever since I first saw a magazine photo of it over 10 years ago.

Playing Conditions 8.48 GREAT
Playing Conditions 8.48 GREAT

We were greeted in the parking lot and given our cart. After checking in and exploring the pro shop we had a quick breakfast and putted a few balls. The grass driving range was close by but there wasn’t time to warm up before heading out. The starter gave us a few hints and instructions and off we went.

The view from the first tee was just a small taste of the spectacular scenery that we would see throughout the day. So many times reality doesn’t meet the perfection of media photos, but in this case it exceeded it by a mile. The green turf and white sand contrasted against the red canyons was breathtaking. There was a lot of colorful desert flowers in bloom. From every direction, it was just gorgeous.

The Review

The conditions were just amazing. The fairways were lush with no flaws that I could see. The bunkers were a little thin but clean and groomed. The rough was consistent around the course and easy to hit from. The greens were firm and fast. There were a few unrepaired marks here and there but not enough to give a second thought to at the time. The tee boxes were all level with few divots.

I often marvel at how much work it must take to keep any golf course in good shape, but never as much as I did here. With the overall amount of space, all the elevation changes and areas of grass just tucked into little hidden curves, it’s just amazing. Huge kudos to the maintenance crew.

The course is tough, even from the very short red tees. Hole #4 with its bunker minefield was certainly interesting (I got caught in 3 of them). Although the forward tees often take out some of the challenge of forced carries, hole #7 still had all the thrill. I had a great drive right down to the creek and then made the very high uphill second shot over the canyon to the green. That hole was fun! Prior to playing I had seen a very intimidating photo of #14. Seeing it in person just got me so excited and determined to get it right!

Parting Thoughts

The only thing I didn’t like was the carts. It was very hard to control the speed when going down the extremely steep hills. And there was no GPS. If there is ever a course where one would be helpful it’s Wolf Creek. There is no beverage cart on the course but the comfort station by holes 6 & 15 has a drive-thru window. I’d never seen that before.

Playing Wolf Creek was everything I’d hope it would be. Playing it was probably one of the most satisfying rounds I’ve had. It was totally worth the price and shooting 97 (!) was just the icing on the cake. I’m ready to play it again!

I rarely play Riverside, mainly because it gets super crowded and two because you get punished for being in the fairway. Several of the fairways are a cross between a downhill mogul ski slope and a super-cross track! Not sure what the thought process is behind punishing a player for being in the fairway, but it’s not my cup of tea. Having said that, the course is in very nice shape for the most part. Holes 1-12 are in great shape tee to green. Greens were rolling on the slow side but were very smooth. Fairways and tee boxes are very lush throughout.

The Review

Golf Playing Conditions 7.13 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.13 GREAT

Only one tee box was divot ridden. All others were good to go. There were a few areas on holes 13-15 that were thin and brown on the fairways and the green on #14 was riddled with pitch marks. Not sure what happened there but all others were excellent. A couple of the greens on the back nine are tiny. As in living room throw rug tiny. Seriously, they were about half the size of my backyard putting green.

Customer service: Check in at the pro shop was average. I walked on as a single and he wasn’t all that accommodating. just said he’ll get me out in about 15 minutes or so. Never said anything else until I heard my name called out with another group for next up on the tee box.

However, the marshal was absolutely excellent. I dropped my phone on one of the fairways and the marshal was very friendly and super accommodating in giving me a ride back to look for it. He then offered to give me a ride back to catch up with my group or let me settle in behind a twosome to continue where I left off.

Additional Thoughts

Prices are very reasonable at Riverside ($26 to walk prime time) and with the nice conditions right now, I can see why the place gets so packed. Layout of the track is average. One lake that comes into play on 2 holes (3 if you muff a drive real bad on #17). Most of the course is flat with only a couple of holes having elevation changes. There is a train track that runs directly next to a few of the holes so you do have to deal with a number of trains going by as you play.

Given the price and conditions at Riverside it’s a solid option when in the valley or traveling through on Highway 99.
