Played here yesterday (4/27) for the first time ever with some of my girlfriend’s family on a very cool and overcast day with the first available twilight tee-time (2pm). I had only ever passed by the property, but was lucky enough to get invited to play on this iconic and historic course on a very fair $89 rate. I didn’t stay here but from the looks of it, this place is first-class all the way. The course itself was very interesting in the types of holes it has to offer, the layout and how it is worked into the natural Ojai landscape, as well as the staff and condition.

The Review

Golf Playing Conditions 8.22 GREAT

Tee-boxes: Nothing wrong with the tee-boxes other than they were a bit chewed up by the time we teed off. Most everyone was playing blues as even from the tips, this course is very short (with serious teeth). Ground was fairly level all day.

Fairways. Good to great condition. Visually pleasing to the eye, offered a fair amount of roll even with some mist all day, and the lies for shots were never bad.

Rough: The stickiest of the icky. Grabbed your club, swallowed up balls, and overall kept everyone humble all day long. Various type of natural long grass made for a difficult day for those not in the fairway today.

Bunkers: Was in more than a few today and conditions were good, not great. This sand is more the brown dirt style than the August pearl white stuff you’d like to have. I wish the bunkers had more sand in them, but most of the bad shots today were all on me.

Greens: Very good condition. Started off slow and finished closer to the medium-fast level. They were running smooth, even as visually they left something to be desired aesthetically. The breaks were wicked at times and these greens for the most part are tiny (especially in the front). Didn’t hold shots well at all but putted true.

Parting Thoughts

Wonderful carts with Shark Experience integrated and good color GPS. Pace today was just under 4.5 hours but felt very slow at times with a single we had to let pass after hole 3 (even as we waited for him between us and the group ahead who refused to let him pass) and other groups on the back 9 that popped out of nowhere. Routing can get a bit confusing but the property is so beautiful, you almost don’t mind.

Carts equipped with coolers, ice, and water. Fruit and ice stations at least 2 that I saw. Cart attendant came around at least 3 times; food was very good. Parts of the course felt completely isolated and the front plays very different than the back. Highly recommended!

This is my first time here and first I need to say the staff was far from welcoming. Maybe I caught them on a bad morning, but they were not talkative or friendly. Whatever I can write that off. Also, the maintenance people on the mowers were of the mindset that you need to get out of their way vs them treating you like a customer. One guy on a mower came within a foot of my ball in the fairway while I was standing next to it. None of them pulled over to let golfers play through, they just continued on with their work as if you were in the way.

The course it’self is flat and it reminds me of an executive course except longer. It did not have any ball washers anywhere on the course. Nothing very challenging to speak of. Not a lot of trees either, but some. It is well maintained with the exception of the rough off the fairway. I lost 6 balls within 20′ of the fairway because the grass was so long. The play was slowed considerably because every foursome was out looking for balls that missed the fairway by just a few feet. It’s actually hard to believe you can lose a ball knowing where it hit but that was the case. I asked a player in the parking lot if that was normal and he said it was exceptionally long for some reason so I guess I’ll give it a pass but I felt the need to report it.

I’ll play it again and hopefully, it will be in better shape as far as the rough is concerned. The tee boxes and greens were in very good shape.

Played Riverwalk today using the greenskeeper.org coupon. $35 for this course is a good deal.

Tee boxes in good shape, blue and white were combined on most holes. Most were level and easy to play from. Fairways are a mixed bag. Most are good in the center but the more you go to the edges the worse they get. They need to do a better job of marking ground under repair. Sand was good, a little wet due to the rain but still playable. Greens were in good shape and most rolled well with just a few bumps here and there.

If you can get a deal it is still worth playing but I would not pay the regular rate.

Was invited by leef2020 to play with his regular group on Monday 4/29 with a 2:16 tee time paying $42. Great rate for this course. A lot of people out there but can see why. This course is great shape right now. Breezed through the front 9 in about 2 hours, never waiting but it slowed down on the back. Sill finished in about 4. 5 hours.

Fairways are great. Didn’t have a bad fairway lie out there at all. The rough was thick and penal. Hit the ball a little heavy and the rough would easily turn the club face. Tee boxes were excellent. Full coverage and freshly cut. Bunkers were excellent also. Good firm sand.

The greens are excellent. A bit hard, not holding and not real fast but they rolled great.

This course is a challenge. Potential for birdies on some holes but can see double bogeys on others. Particularly on the back 9 where some fairways are tight. Only played here twice and the back 9 has kicked my butt each time. Still a beautiful track with some great views. Look for a good price online and go for it! Highly recommend.

Played on 4/14/19.

Beautiful mountain course, weaves in and out of the trees nicely. Lots of elevation changes on nearly every hole.

The course had only recently opened for the season, but was in very good condition. Greens were about average speed, in good shape as well.

There are some very nice signature holes, 8, 10 and 18 come to mind.

A little bit off the beaten path, but with a hotel and casino on property, who can go wrong (paid for my greens fees at the craps table).

Round two on Easter Sunday as we ended our weekend of bowling and golf by teeing up at 1:30 with rain drops starting on the first tee box. Facility and Staff were very friendly and helpful in giving us the layout to expect. Great practice facility with nice music playing from rock speakers in and around the driving range and putting green.

The Review

Onto golf, Tee boxes were perfect, no issues on any holes. fairways were in perfect condition with rough surrounding the fairways at 1 to 3 inches. Greens were firm and fast rolling true on some tough pin positions, bunkers were full and sand seemed heavy to hit from. The rain really came down on us on the par 4 4th hole but when we got our bag covers out and protected what we could of our exposed golf gear, it stopped raining and the sun began to peak at us from time to time.

A lot of unfilled divots in the fairway, “C’mon Man,” grab the bottle and shake some sand out ! Little to no wind made the day simply wonderful and it was a great way to close out round 3 for the weekend.

I would play this course every week if I could.

Rode the Blues (6313/70.6/129) in slightly less than 4 hours early morning. Paired up with Jeff, Richard and Gary. The weather was clear, windy and in the 90’s.

Golf Playing Conditions 7.68 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.68 GREAT

SilverRock offers many tee shots that are nicely camouflaged with a large amount of both fairway and green side traps. Numerous driving areas appear tight. However, this is not a tight course overall with generous fairway landing areas for the most part once you get around bends and look back at the tee.

The Review

The tees were lush and well maintained. Only the par 3’s needed divot repair.

The fairways were lush, with a few brownish spots from the heat here and there. Nicely maintained and good to play from.

Same for the rough, mowed low and nicely maintained.

The sand traps were in excellent condition. Good quality sand that was thick and plentiful. Tough to play from with large lips and long carries if you short sided yourself.

The greens are hard, not firm in the heat and the wind. Smooth, medium fast and even well struck irons would release a good amount.

Final Thoughts

The customer service was outstanding as always here. From the complimentary range balls all the way to the cart guy cleaning your clubs after the round. Cart gal out making the rounds. One of my favorite layouts in the Palm Springs area. It is away from any houses with a decent amount of lakes, canals and native areas to keep things interesting. Definitely recommended.

Played 4-26-19 early morning as a single walking for $32 and finishing in about 2 hours and 15 minutes.

A lot of the tee boxes have been re-sodded and they were all open except the back tee on 9. The boxes were in good shape and level with good coverage and minimal divot damage on par threes.

Fairways were in real nice shape, lush with good lies and descent roll out.

Rough was in good shape and not to long with some minor bare spots the farther you got from the fairway.

Was not in in bunkers but all all looked to be in good shape with white sand and nicely groomed. Greens were playing semi soft with medium speed and mostly smooth.

New management is doing a great job, every time I come out here I see new improvements on the course.
