Golf Playing Conditions 6.58 GOOD

Greens have healed from whatever punching was done, were fairly firm and fast. Only green I could tell was punched recently was #14 on the back and it was minimal, still very nice. Greens were definitely the highlight of the course.

Fairways are a little dried out and brown, allowing for excellent roll off the tee and some tight lies on wedges. Rough is fluffy and hit or miss and inconsistent around the course. Was in two bunkers and caught some good lies but the sand out here is definitely inconsistent.

Course is hosting a US open qualifier on Wednesday May 8th, so conditions, particularly the greens should be very nice around that time and quick. I saw a regular rate at the time we were playing was about 180 bucks, tough to spend that much on golf myself, if I had to pay I’d probably head to inland empire for 50 bucks or somewhere like goosecreek for better conditions.

Golf Playing Conditions 7.36 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.36 GREAT

Played 4-1-19 early morning for 36 holes finishing in about 4 1/2 hours.

Tee boxes were in good shape, mostly level with descent coverage. Fairways were in really nice shape, some had a few bare spots but mostly great lies and good coverage. Number 1 fairway had a small area that was under repair, looked like a pipe broke. Rough was 2-3 inches and thick, ball would sit down a little making for some tough shots. Was in a few green-side bunkers all of which had heavy brown sand that was a little on the thin side. Greens were in really good shape, medium/fast pace and smooth and semi-soft.

The course is in the greenest shape I have seen it in a long time, just in really good shape and well worth a trip to play.

Played an early morning round at Raven. Good friendly service, and quick. I was able to play quickly and pace of play was just over 3 and a half hours.

Course condition was good, greens rolled good. Looks like they have cut down some pines and other trees to clean up areas. Bunkers were primarily good with some that had some inconsistency in them (too much or too little sand). Lots of bunkers on this course so difficult to maintain.

Good quality round and conditions were good.

Golf Playing Conditions 6.36 GOOD

Sunday, March 31, twilight $25, first time here. Apparently, there is only one rate for both visitors and locals. I was delighted when I heard that on this nice day of 82 degrees, light breezed sunny day. To top it off, everyone I spoke to at the pro shop were all kind and helpful… well almost.. the starter feels he needs to be difficult for some reason and I’ll just leave it at that- everyone is having their own battle so his may be tougher than most.

Anyway, because of the nice staffs and the course being next to the water in a nice warm weather, I can’t help but think I’m in the islands- and that’s a treat on its own.

The Review

I found the course to be very flat with elevated greens and teeing grounds. It was really nice for walking but although it was moving well on the fairways, our round took four and a half hours. We suspect it was the greens where the group in front struggled and were a bit slow.

We knew the greens were being punched as scheduled yesterday and today April 1&2 so this review may not help anyone. But just to go through the process, the greens were hard enough not to hold any approaches making it tough even if you run it up because of the kikuyu grass around the greens.

The bunkers were fine and the fairways were in good shape. The rough were not tall at all, it just looks like an uneven/un-mowed area. It wasn’t bad. The teeing grounds were okay, some of them were uneven but not that chewed up- it was okay.

Final Thoughts

There were about 4 fairways that had out of bound markers on either left or right and one I’m sure it was both on left and right sides. I’m not too crazy about that, but it looks like they had to do it and they have a sign they do not want you to play from an OB fairway as it can slow play or worse yet dangerous.

There was a bev cart that came by a few times. ($4 gatoraide!)

If I get another chance to play here, I will surely take that chance.

Played Crossings for the first time in six months today at 1:39pm, with a friendly couple from Canada. Friendly greetings by the cart/bag attendees, pro shop staff and starter. POP was pretty good, finishing in 4hrs 20mins.

Course is still in mostly winter conditions. Tees and fairways are good, and fairways provided good lies and roll. Rough was highly inconsistent due to some grasses growing well, and others still dormant, creating tufts of grass behind my ball a few times.

Bunkers seem to have received some new sand, as the sand was very light/slippery, a few inches of fluff before you get to any base, particularly on up-slopes/faces. Easy to ‘whiff’ under the ball.

Greens are mostly, but not 100% recovered from their punching 6 weeks ago. Still, they were a highlight of the course – very lush and deep green, held shots well and rolled nicely at medium pace.

Course is good now. Will likely be great in a month!

Played 04/01 for my birthday. Overall experience was amazing.

The limo ride to the course where they meet and greet you and escort you to the locker room makes you feel special.

The course is spectacular. To see a tree lined golf course in the middle of the desert is quite unique. The course is in exceptional condition. The only drawback was that the greens had a very thin top dressing on them.

My caddie Chris was very friendly and probably saved me 10 strokes on the green with all the subtle breaks

Played a twilight round today. Thought the price was a little to high @ 105. $80 to walk.

As had not played here in many years I was OK with the price.

Found the course to be in great shape. Tee boxes were perfect. Fairways were good ( though a few had been mowed to close) and had good roll and lies. The rough was a beast. Traps were playable. Greens were in nice shape but putted slow all round.

Very nice course. Service was excellent. Food was good also. Great patio area overlooking the course and the ocean.

Agree with John about 10 to 14 having great views and great stretch of holes. If you like different courses then this is a one and done to play and put it on your list.

Just posted a bunch of high resolution pics here on GK. Check them out.

For years every time it rained in Santa Barbara I thought, good, means Rancho San Marcos will be more green. I know sounds silly but this is one of my favorite golf courses and it was painful seeing it struggle through the drought. In 2017 is was back to being green and now it’s in the best shape I’ve seen in over 10 years.

The ambiance of Rancho San Marcos tucked in a beautiful valley next to Lake Cachuma inside the Los Padres National Forest is tough to beat. Add it the ranch décor theme of the facility and you’ve got quite a stage for your round of golf.

As far as conditions, excellent. The whole course is very lush, green with full coverage. The greens are smooth, medium/fast and holding shots. The fairways are like carpet (amazing when you think back to the way they were during the drought). Rough, lush, with primary cut low yet secondary rough almost knee high and dense. Miss a fairway badly off the tee and don’t bother looking for your ball. And if you do be careful of snakes as it’s that time of year when they come out from hibernation. The bunkers all contain high quality sand which in some cases could use some raking. The tee boxes are lush and level. The course is a total pleasure to play.

Before your round you want to give yourself time to practice as they have an exceptional all grass driving range, pitching/sand area and putting green. You also might want to give yourself time to grab a bite to eat. Quality food priced right. I had a breakfast sandwich in the morning and delicious tri-tip soft tacos for lunch.

Service is in the clubhouse is great. I did not however see an on course food/beverage service all day. Guessing because it was a Tuesday round.

Something to note, they do not have GPS on the carts but do have 150 and 200 yards plates in the fairways. Advise to bring your own yardage devices.

Final Thought

I’m already planning to get back up there for another round in May!
