My first round in 9 weeks and my first experience with golf COVID-19. Teeing off at 12:30pm Monday 5/10 joined by GDR23, Kviser and RGM2525 we had a super time.

Pulling in I’ve never seen so many cars in the Sterling Hills Golf Club parking lot on a Monday non-holiday weekday. Upon walking up to the clubhouse I noticed it was closed off the public entrance with open doors and check-in taking place at the cart staging area. We chose to walk but had someone in our group had a physical issue they could have opted for a cart.

Range balls were available for players with mats and spacing on the range.

At the first tee was a staff member with mask and gloves on giving us guidance. Out on the golf course mask was not required and pins had the foam pool noodle insert about halfway down the cups to allow the ball to drop. No rakes in the bunkers nor ball washers as expected. Personally I hardly felt COVID-19 disrupted all day as a walker plus I got great exercise on a golf course I almost always ride.

Felt amazing to be playing with friends on a beautiful day on a fun track.

Conditions were overall very good.

Greens mostly soft, rolling smooth at about medium speed.

Fairways mostly lush with some minor dry areas and good coverage all around. The fairways were a blend of warm and cool temp turf so I would expect a minor transition period moving into the summer months.

The rough is mostly kikuyu with mixtures of other grasses and mostly lush. There are many elevated greens and tight pin placements so be glad you spent all that time in COVID-19 backyard quarantine with your lob wedge!

Bunkers had quality sand with some containing non-raked footprints (no rakes makes that understandable).

Tee boxes (played the blues) had good coverage. Little inconsistent from box to box as far as levelness and turf height but overall in good shape.

The Bottom-Line

4 ½ hour pace a play with a little bit of waiting.

I took a bunch of photos of the golf course I encourage you to check out here on GK.

Looking forward to my next round at Sterling Hills already.

Played in the GK Cup final here on Sunday with mnielson, JohnnyGK and Nickesquire. First time here and really enjoyed the course.

Conditions are what you’d expect in winter except for the excellent greens, which were definitely the high point. They were smooth, fast and accepted full shots well, but shorter shots tended to run out quite a bit. Really fun to putt and I feel like I was just getting a good feel for them toward the very end of the round. Fairways were thin but with decent coverage. Rough was a little spottier; my ball ended up on bare spots once or twice. The bunkers I was in – one fairway and one green-side – were both good, especially the green-side one, which was excellent. Blue tee boxes were a little beat up but not a big deal.

I really enjoyed the layout, which snakes through housing but also has some spots where several holes converge and provide less of a “housing tract” course. Friendly staff and seems like they have great rates, too. Definitely recommended, and I’d like to play it again sometime with lusher conditions. Thanks to Johnny and Nick for setting it up and thanks to the course to having us out!

Finally, big congrats to Mike for capturing the Cup! Fun day!

Rode the Blacks this morning 6/17/2019 around 10:40am with John, Ron and Wendy(great people to play with if you ever get the chance to). We had a super time on a beautiful day for golf with just a little bit of wind on the back nine and mid 70 temps. POP was 4 hours 45 minutes with no waiting on the front and some waiting on the back nine.

Had not been out here in 14 months. This course is in good shape and in much better shape today than my previous rounds out here. Lee Harlow and his staff are doing a great job with this course and I would recommend that you go play Sterling Hills now.

The greens were in very good shape, hardly any ball-marks rolling medium to fast pace with a nice smooth roll. Some of the green complexes have some potato chip swales and undulations which I love and makes putting here fun and challenging. They can tuck some of the back pins in challenging places on some of these bigger green surfaces. Rating the greens an 8/10.

The fairways were really nice and pretty much the most improved area on this course. Just awesome great coverage with your ball sitting up nicely. Did not see any bare spots. Fairway rating 8/10.

Tees were very lush, some of the teeing grounds were uneven but were big enough that you could always find a level spot. Rating 7/10.

Was in green-side bunker on #18 that was well raked and easy to hit out of.

Rough looked to be uniform, semi-lush and in good shape with few problem areas.

Would love to see one more par 5 out here. I love courses with 5 par 5’s and Sterling Hills only has 3 of them with two of them being the last 2 holes. They have some scoring holes out here like 4, 7, 9, 16 and 18 and some hang on tougher holes like 3, 14 and 17.

Staff here was super friendly, they have a range, huge putting green and with the cooler temps in Camarillo, current nice shape of the course and the new GK coupon I can see this course getting a lot of play.
