Having not played here in many years, stopped by on my way home from Morro Bay.

The two previous reviews are spot on (especially GDR23’s). Even his tips from 2006 are still helpful.

The Review

I had forgotten much of the course since my last visit.  But reading previous, recent reviews prepared me for a great experience.

Course is in wonderful condition (in my honest opinion) and had a wonderful time playing a great layout.

I have always been a fan favorite of Robert Muir Graves designed courses. My personal opinion, I do not think he gets or has received as much acclaim as he deserves? I always say I am going to stop and play here, when returning from Northern California or Monterey and so glad I did this time.

Final Thought

A must play (in my honest opinion) for the golf purist. I don’t think this course will disappoint any golfer?

Played today 5/28/2019 at the Inn. I can see why this used to be a former Senior PGA tour stop. When you drive in the grounds you feel special. Hallowed grounds knowing that Trevino, Palmer, etc hit tee shots here. This is a shot makers course that is both scenic, fun and challenging.

The conditions were just terrific.

The greens were rolling medium paced, pure and held all shots that were high or had spin coming in on them. I rarely find greens where I am not fixing an extra ball mark or two. Green complexes range from a couple small ones to some big complexes with some swales and undulation. Love the greens here. Rated 8.5/10

The fairways and rough are just in fantastic shape. Fairways had perfect green lies and rough was semi-penal but still easy to hit out of. Green-side rough looked to be mowed down. I remember playing here years ago where you did not want to be in the green-side rough. Rating for fairways and rough was close to a 9/10.

Tees were level for the most part, I saw some divot damage on the par 3’s–tee rating 8/10,

Was not in any bunkers but they looked firmer.

Don’t let the shorter front nine fool you–once you get to number 14 you really start playing some golf on 16, 17 and 18.

My only gripe today was they did not have the back tee box open on number 18 which I think is one of the tougher tee shots on the course. I also think its the best shot on the course.

The staff here treated me like gold, awesome place to take the wife for lunch as well.

Can’t recommend this place enough. Great course!

Returning from Santa Barbara on Saturday, 5/25, I decided to take advantage of the Memorial weekend $22-to-walk rate RR was offering.

Playing Conditions 7.05 GREAT
Playing Conditions 7.05 GREAT

I lived in Ventura for a while back in the early ’80s and had not been back to play RR until relatively recently — a few years back and long after the completion of the Lakes course. I took this opportunity to play the reconfigured Vineyard course for the first time, getting out early afternoon as a single with no one in front of me.

I’d say the overall conditions were pretty good, and actually comparable to the conditions at Sandpiper a couple of days before. Good teeing grounds, playable rough, similar fairways, green, leaning towards tight with good roll-out. Bunkers were good, clean and playable while the greens were firm and pretty quick. I noticed the first green had a bit of a cauliflower looking texture to it but it didn’t seem to affect the roll. I don’t recall seeing it on the other greens.

The holes that had not been reconfigured since the old days elicited a bit of nostalgia in me and I appreciated the familiarity. But while I enjoyed it in general, now that I can compare it to the Lakes course, I definitely prefer the Lakes. I think one reason is that the Lake course is at least as challenging but more out in front of you as to what you need to do while Vineyard has more blind shots. That’s all personal opinion and not a comment on the conditions, which were fine. Based on conditions, I’d definitely recommend it.

Played Oak Quarry (OQ) on 5/28. I’ll echo what the last review said (Editor’s Note:  Click HERE for Past Reviews at Oak Quarry) – this course is in outstanding condition. Much better than anything else I’ve seen in Los Angeles/Orange/Riverside Counties in quite a long time. I hear Goose Creek is nice right now, and was hoping to get in a 2nd round there this day, but the schedule didn’t work out.

Golf Playing Conditions 7.25 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.25 GREAT

The only less than stellar thing I can say about OQ is that the greens are recovering from a verticut, so you’ll see small grooves, but the greens roll well and are just a bit slower than usual – which means you might actually have a chance to make a putt. Once they start shaving them close, forget it. Still, the greens are better than anything I have played in the area recently. Also, bunkers are thin in a couple of spots, although even those spots seem to play well. I was lucky enough to find numerous bunkers today, felt like a beach holiday.

Rough is plush, but ball sits up pretty well. Tee boxes are great.

Highest possible recommendation.

Golf Playing Conditions 4.37 FAIR
Golf Playing Conditions 4.37 FAIR

Played Wilson early on Memorial Day. Waited about one half hour after getting on the waiting list before I was on the tee. Pretty empty considering it was a holiday, went out as a threesome followed by another and saw some threes and even a pair playing behind us. Maybe the rain the day before or because it was cool in the morning (48 degrees when I got there), but it turned into a spectacular day and was crowded when I finished. A tick under 4 hours for POP.

The course is in good shape. Overall good coverage on the fairways. The rough was cut pretty low but still a factor to hit out of. It was pretty lush Kikuyu in places. Was in one sand trap and had good sand but a playing partner in the same trap had almost no sand under his ball. The greens were soft and I had seen them faster. That said, they were pretty good at medium speed that picked up a little as the course dried out. Some bumps but not too bad. There were some long (as opposed to round) punches on some areas of a few greens but nothing that affected a putt.

Good customer service by the starter. Saw him come out of the shop to show a person the group the guy was playing with. Seemed to very competently handle both courses. Only complaint was the coffee shop did not open until 6:30 am. No coffee! Otherwise no complaints on a great morning on the course. And traffic was light on the way home. Can not ask for more from Wilson.

Golf Playing Conditions 5.83 GOOD
Golf Playing Conditions 5.83 GOOD

Played on Monday, Memorial Day, to what was a perfect weather day. Tee’d off at 2:00 to what seemed like a uncrowded course, but the round still too 5 hours because of a very slow group two groups in front of us. The course was moving until hole 8 where the was three groups waiting to tee off. I haven’t played “Big Rec” in years and I very much enjoyed myself. The conditions were decent.

Tees – The tees have been punched recently, but that did not effect anything.

Fairways – good lies the entire day, not in great shape but they are very playable.

Rough – rough is a mixed bag, from very thick and nasty to thin.

Bunkers – this sand with a hard bottom. Had a difficult time getting the ball to stop on the greens when hitting from the bunkers. The greens were fast and you need to be able to spin the ball out of the bunkers to have a good chance.

Greens – Rolled medium fast leaning towards the faster side. It is a heavily played course and not may people fix ball marks. It took me a few holes to get used to the speed. the rolled good most of the day and became bumpy towards the end of the day.

Overall I enjoyed my round as this course has a good variety of holes and some are just downright fun to play. Course is not overly difficult and good scores can be had here. I will be back soon.

This course is in much better shape than nearby Heron Lakes. It appears at first to be a relatively easy course. But watch out. There are many water hazards in play.

The wind and hard ground turns this flat course into a 5 or 6 shot harder golf course. The greens were aerified last week but are healing nicely.

This place has an excellent practice facility and driving range. The mats are a little hard, however. The course reminds me a bit of Mile Square.

Played May 20; using Underpar $66 two-some on a pleasant somewhat breezy am. Had 10:00 tee time but Don the jovial starter gave us the option of an early start so off at 9:20 joined by Linda an very enjoyable playing partner who even though she purported only playing for 2 1/2 years exhibited good athletic ability and a high golf IQ being very familiar with etiquette and overall awareness.

The Review

Golf Playing Conditions 5.97 GOOD
Golf Playing Conditions 5.97 GOOD

The course itself was in overall good condition, fairways quite lush, more on the soft side so limited roll but excellent lies. #9 has some mixed grasses so the potential exists for clumps to be a factor. A few unfilled divots here and there but not bad.

Rough mostly on the shorter side but with some areas very penal. Tees pretty much level with some a little thin but playable. Bunkers varied from full with nice compacted sand to thin coverage.

Greens are very healthy, on the soft side, smooth but having some grain to factor in rolling at medium speed. Topography has a great deal of influence on this course. Greens are most often fronted by swales of various sizes and with the kikouyu shots hit short stay short.

My Thoughts

The layout is “interesting” with many doglegs and some blind landing areas and multiple elevation changes.
POP about 415 with some waiting. Staff is friendly and easy going.
