Played the Ike today in a club tourney, C-note entry. Course extremely green and a bit soggy in some areas, but tee-to-green very full and what we would expect of IH. Greens were in great shape, bunkers were perfect sand although thin in some spots. Rough deep and a challenge to play out of, so stay in the short stuff or else. Played CPO so PoP was over 5 hrs. Qualifier tomorrow for the Genesis so it should be a good challenge for the guys trying to get in.

Time to get out and play this course, it’s back to where it should be as a high-end public venue.

Played our Men’s club tourney on Sat 2/14. Big tournout due to the rains many of us had not played and were suffering cabin fever. Slight drizzle at my place, hard showers in the Fontana area, looked like maybe we would be canceled.

During our breakfast which was decent, the rain/drizzles stopped.  We had an 8:30 shotgun start which got under way on time, hit our 1st drive about 10 minutes later on our assigned hole.

The Course – conditions were in much better shape than what I was expecting due to all the rain the last couple days, and the intermittent showers that morning. The entire course was nice and green, the rain has helped.
Tee boxes wee semi-lush a bit uneven but playable, not too many divots. The fairways were running decent with no plugged shots, the rough was at about 2-3 inches and not punishing. The bunkers were damp, fortunately I was not in one, but 2 of my guys were and had a couple bad shots with the damp sand killing the club momentum.

The greens were medium-fast to slow.  They were running around 9.5 to 10 as the round progressed. Pin placement on some holes were punishing, they were set right on the crown of some tricky slopes. One or two ball marks from the teams in front of us, but most were repaired, especially the ones closer to the hole.

All in all a very nice day, a bit on the cool side at first but the sun peeked out after about our 10th hole, and warmed up as we were finishing. Customer service was good, people running around the parking lot helping take clubs to the carts, food/beverage staff was friendly, and welcoming. 19th hole was restricted to the bar area due to prep for a wedding party, and no food service except at the snack bar.

Just posted some photos of the course from last week’s GK Review Guru round. We had 8 players. I played with leef2020, larryq2001 and sr129. Great fun and good timing on a rare perfect weather day in February. Course was in good shape. And considering the large amount of rain only days before, as well as this season, I was very impressed how well it handled it. Very few soggy areas. The only area of the course that showed saturation were the greens. Thus, the green speed was fine but a bit bumpy from footprints and very soft accepting shots. Fairways were green, provided decent lies but still winter thin due since most the turf is bermunda which thrives in the summer. Rough was spotty with some lush and thin areas but again due to it too being predominately summer turf. Tee boxes in very good shape. Mostly level and lush. The highlight was the conditions of the bunkers. Looked like all of them had new fluffy sand. I found quite a few and they played beautifully (with exception to my fried egg lie in a fairway bunker – lol).

I love this layout, played the blues, just over 6500 yards, lots of elevation changes, nice views, dog legs, mixes of long and short holes, well protected greens, risk/reward opportunities, no parallel holes and fair undulating greens. I think hole number 8, called appropriately cyclops due to a bunker being in the middle of the green is my favorite (see photo).

The service was excellent but would have enjoyed seeing a beverage cart on the course. Was getting pretty thirsty out there. A cold one would have been nice.

This is a simi-private golf course that was once totally private. Fancy clubhouse and amenities. I’m looking very forward to returning.

Late to the review party – I played the white tees with the GK Gurus at 1140 on Thursday, 2/9/17. Thanks to GKers jerry64, zgolfinman, and 140ver for a fun round. I like the setting and layout of this course, and I wish it was closer to me so I could play it more often. I found the staff very accommodating, the course in good shape, and the day very enjoyable. Overall the course was fairly damp and soft after all the recent rain, although the temperatures in the late morning were quite warm, and I found myself overdressed as locals showed up in shorts!

Greens had good coverage, with some occasional thin areas around the edges – they were medium fast and got slower as temperatures dropped and day went on – generally held shots but some areas of some greens were firmer than others. I didn’t see too many old ballmarks.

Fairways had good coverage but lies were tight. Rough was cut very short and playable, but could be clumpy. Sand traps around the greens had plentiful and fluffy material; however, there were many unraked areas in the traps (see: jerry64!). Tees were just fine.

Friendly starter. Pin sheet for that day on the cart – nice. First few holes started with a ‘gate’ entry/exit system for the carts, which in my opinion helps reduce casual/random wear and tear on course conditions along the margins of cart paths. The starter made a point of telling us about it – but the system was abandoned by the course for whatever reason after the 4th hole, and we never saw the gates again!

Drainage areas between the holes are pretty torn up after all the recent rain/runoff – many of these areas look like they could use some thinning, both for aesthetics and for more effective flood control and drainage conveyance. The driving range grass was fuzzy but fairly level – it’s a nice separated range area that also has a chipping green/sand practice area. However, the sand is not like that next to the greens around the course – the practice bunker is very damp and hard packed with only a thin playing layer.

No cart girl -there’s a grill at turn but it’s far from the travel line from #9 to #10. The course needs more water stations. I didn’t see a bathroom on the front nine.

An unfortunate cap to the round was running into a total loser 20-something single on #18 tee – he was scruffy in cutoffs, hat backward, unshaved and mouthy and rude when we called him out for cutting in front of us (“I came off the 9th green and the 10th tee was crowded, so I drove over to #18”!!!). Left a bad taste in the mouth, but definitely not enough to spoil the great day I had playing with other GK Gurus.

I had to head for home right after the round, so I missed out on staying afterward to get to better know GKers in the second group that I had barely met before – sorry Larry and Lee. Definitely recommended.

Joined Johnny, Steve/SR129, Larry/larryq2001 on Thursday for a sunny day of golf, teeing off in the 2nd group, about 11:50am.

Was impressed with the course layout overall, several very interesting, and a variety of holes and scenery. Certainly a good challenge – even from the whites for a short-hitter, required some shot strategy, particularly navigating (mostly dry) ravines on approach shots to a handful of greens, but holes were fair, except on one par 3, where Johnny and Larry, playing the blues, actually had shorter yardage than Steve and I had from the whites!?!

I thought the tees were mostly very smooth, nice and green. I do remember 3 tee boxes where it was challenging to get an even lie within the ropes, including the par 3 18th. So, I cheated.

Fairways were pretty firm, getting a decent amount of roll. Mostly lush and green, divots were fairly well filled in with sand from golfers. The fairway grasses and rough were a bit spotty here and there, but nothing too much to complain about. Not up to the standard right now of Goose Creek and Black Gold, but pretty decent.

I found the greens looked great from the fairways. They were green and had good cover, but were not cut as crisply as I’d hope for, and the grain was not always consistent. Maybe a rolling is in order? A bit bumpy-putting from foot traffic and shaggy cups. With a few (faster) exceptions, I thought they were medium-speed to start, ending a bit medium-slow later in the day, as Johnny had predicted the grass was likely to grow quite a bit by the end of the day – he knows his stuff! I did enjoy the variety of undulations that made for some interesting putts.

Was disappointed that we never saw a cart lady/person on the course, no ball washers on the course to be found, and only 1 jug of iced water on the 7th and a drinking fountain along with the loos, about the 13th hole. Really impairs the on-course player experience on this point. Would be brutal in the summer. There is a snack bar at the turn, but it is very much out of the way inside the clubhouse – not good when you’re trying to maintain contact with the group in front. The lady marshal came around on the 3rd hole and urged us to pick up the pace, as we were probably 4-5 mins slower the the first GKer group at that point. Like that I finally saw a marshal do their job. We finished in 4:35 mins, so she should’ve kept watching us. 😉

Mia serving drinks in the 19th hole is a gem, great personality, and took good care of Larry and myself. Look forward to giving this course another go, bringing a stash of my own refreshments next time. Really had a very enjoyable afternoon with this group, and look forward to a chance to tee it up again with them! Cheers. Lee

$65. I was joined with a very nice twosome and a single. Pace of play was fine at 4 hours 15 minutes, with very little waiting on any hole. Overall the course is in good winter condition. Except for a couple of the par 3 holes, the tee boxes were lush and level. Greens were quite fast and rolled smooth. They were mostly firm but did hold well hit shots nicely. It was a difficult day of putting as many of the pin locations were on or near slopes. The two traps I visited had very nice soft sand. The fairways and areas near the greens are very tight. The fairway grass is not very green (typical winter grass) and is thin. Although if you were in the fairway you would nearly always have a good lie. This is a fun track and quite playable right now.

Played Spanish Bay on Monday January 30th as part of the Northern California Golf Association (NCGA) Winter special.
It was me and my best friend, just the two of us and we walked it with our push carts. While carts were included you should know that Pebble, Spyglass and Spanish Bay are cart path only. We figured you do just as much walking with a cart so why not just walk. Spanish bay allows pull/push carts Pebble does not and I’m not sure about Spyglass.  Please call ahead.  One other thing you should know is they don’t have a range. Plan to visit Spyglass or Pebble to hit balls first.  It’s not far and it is included with our package. At Spanish Bay they do have a nice putting green and a small chipping area right behind the Pro-shop and next to the first tee.
The first hole takes your breathe away. Par 5 that runs right along the coastline and your approach to the green is looking right out to the pacific. Many of the holes are along the ocean. Some run towards it some run away while others and like the first some are parallel. The back nine has a few more holes the are back in the forest but in my honest opinion they are all wonderful.
Be careful on #11 the top hat hole. You can put up a big number around that green. Number 14 is a great par 5 downhill with nothing but ocean behind. I’ll spare you the hole by hole description but I absolutely loved the course. Some people complain about blind tee shots, but I had a yardage guide and it gave me enough information to get around in 75 — Just saying.  Do get a yardage guide for$10 or have a good Skycaddie.
The greens were immaculate and not overly fast. They rolled very true and the ocean didn’t influence the putts as I thought it would. Glad I asked the starter. Read them right and you’ll be fine. Two groups behind us was LT. Didn’t meet him but it added a little excitement. The NCGA special was $175 and they give you a gift card for $75 to spend at the resort. In my opinion well worth it and I’ll be back next year. In fact with the special you can play Spyglass and Spanish bay for the price of Pebble — Again, just saying.

2/8 last of the birthday rounds $12 after the rains CPO with Pace of Play (POP) 4:20 hours.
Over the last 6 rounds we played courses that have the common factor of large contoured greens that provide a stellar defense against lackadaisical putting making every approach putt and the 3-4 footers a challenge to our sanity. Greens here fit right in and even being slightly slower from residual dampness–only for the 1st 2 hours–putting was not easy. Greens fairly smooth overall and mostly firm but receptive for short and medium shots with chips still running out sometimes more than expected.
Traps need about 2 weeks to dry out. Fairways were less wet than we expected but still played Lift, Clean, Place (LCP) and we were able to find OK lies.
Really good customer service making us welcome.  Thank you for the birthday hospitality.
Due to the rain factor I will not be rating this course this time.  All and all a good tract and an outing worth the 1hr 15min drive.

Fairways – A few brown spots here and there and some ground under repair (GURs) clearly marked. Otherwise, the fairways were lush and green. There were few small muddy areas.
Rough – The first cut had good coverage. The rough in general had good grass coverage but many areas were muddy from the recent rains.
Greens – Greens were excellent. I didn’t find many ball marks and putts were rolling nice and smooth.Unfortunately, I can only play weekend mornings so I can’t get out to Black Gold as often as I’d like to but thanks to the GK Coupon, I hope to play there few times before the coupon expires. The location is convenient and probably one of the best courses in northern part of Orange County.

I played on 01/25/17 afternoon. Eagle Creek is one of my go-to places to play when visiting Orlando. Its not the fanciest place but its always consistent and playable with some great, hidden challenges.
The day I played, course was packed with all the golf personnel flying in from every where for the PGA Merchandise show. This course is adjacent to famous Lake Nona so some of us call Eagle Creek, poor man’s Nona. We got to play at 2PM for less than $40 each as out-of-towners. Customer service is usually great, just attentive enough but not hounding you for post round tips if you don’t want the clubs cleaned. Tee boxes were slightly beat up and not cut down to usual lower manicured settings. Fairways and Greens were very firm and most shots rolled or bounced through due to lot of roll.  Most approach shots were short irons so firmness didn’t effect it as much as it could have been.
During our mid-round, we could see water being applied to greens and greens became more receptive as round wore on. Greens looked shaggy but it rolled faster than it looked and one of the hole, if you didn’t make the putt, it rolled completely off the green and you couldn’t get it within 10 feet of the hole. Our foursome all tried to putt is about 4 times and gave up and called it automatic 2 putts and moved on citing illegal pin placement.
Signature hole at this course is #18 par 5. You must land your ball on an island green that is reachable in 2 but even if you laid up, your short wedge shot is no guarantee of easy par.
Great part about this course is that its fairly close to Orlando International Airport so if you need to catch a flight post golf, this is perfect place to finish up your Orlando golf trip. Enjoy this course while rates are still cheap because its as good as the Disney Courses.
