This was my first time playing Mt. Woodson and what a great course. Layout is fantastic with numerous elevation changes throughout the course to go along with some water hazards.

There are HUGE boulders that range in the size of a car to a small house that line the course which really defines this track as it’s own identity. Being that we have much much smaller versions of rocks lining the backyard putting green the boulders around the course really hit the appeal button for me.

Greens were a very nice dark green color indicating they were super healthy. Greens were soft easily holding approach shots. In fact I might say they were even a bit too soft as there were a couple of tire track indentations from the mower on a couple of greens.

Fairways were a joy to hit from. I’d rate the fairways at a 7.5-8. I can’t comment on the rough. I was either in the fairway or waaaaay off and into the bushes. Sand traps were average in that a couple were a bit thin and others had nice quality soft sand.

We set our own POP with the group in front being long gone and the group behind us never really pushing us.

Final Thought

A definite recommended course and I can see this track being a new staple in my San Diego rotation.

Joined Rob, John and my Father on 6/28 for a fun round out at Bali Hai. Having played here a few times before I knew what I was getting into when we got to the course. The staff is super friendly from the moment you arrive. Check-in was simple and our bags were on carts by the time we left the pro shop. Every thing about this course has a laid back vibe, from the Tiki decor and the country and island music playing by the snack shake to the crush shell mounds separating the holes.

Review

As for course conditions I thought it was better than expected for end of June. The tee’s were goods and had great coverage with the exception of two or three that needed to be moved. Fairways lush and mostly green providing great roll and fluffy enough lies to hit your approach shots. Rough was good and wasn’t overly penal. Greens were medium/fast and held most well well hit shots. The one thing to note is the greens here are tough and the pin locations were tough all day. It is always best to shoot for middle of the green here as there are many false edges.

Final Word

Overall this course is a blast to play even with the planes constantly flying over it is still worth it IMO. I recommend you go out and play.

Played Bayonet Black (Bayonet 7/1/19).  Had some time to play while on vacation in Monterey and found a great deal online for Bayonet.

They are holding multiple tournaments around this time so the course is dialed in. Greens were very fast and the rough was long, which makes an already difficult course, very difficult. While the course is in excellent condition and the views are great, you won’t have fun if you expect to post a low score.

Worth a play if you are up for a challenge.

Played Mt. Woodson for the first time with other Guru’s and was lucky to be paired with fellow GK’ers Tim and Brady. Fun guys to play with and a big thank you to these two guys for helping me through the layout, advising me on where to hit it. Would have been hurting without em as course knowledge is really a must here.

But the course is as nice as they come. Interesting, hilly and fun layout that meanders through the hills and although just over 5700 yards, it’s not easy. Target golf meaning you can keep the driver in the bag on quite a few holes. Fairways were in great condition. In fact one hole, #13 the fairway seemed near perfect all the way through the green. Lies were all great. The rough was a bit thick but that was expected. Tee boxes could use some work but nothing really bad. Was not in any bunkers but they looked like they were in good shape.

The greens were really nice as well. Rolled very nice at about medium pace but held all shots.

Cute little grill with good food and I guess that would be my only complaint. The grill is right next to the #10 tee box and I noticed many groups stop to load up with food when they make the turn. Understandable to get a bite to eat but I can see that really slowing down play. I had a lot of fun out there and am looking forward to the next time I am out there. I have already talked this place up with a couple of friends and giving it some nice props.

Played the Champions course today as part of a tournament. This was my first time playing the champions course which is supposedly the premier track of the two. Course was in very nice condition but I have to say that it’s about the same as the legends course. Both are in nice shape.

The champions course has a number of water features which make the track fun, challenging and appealing to the eyes on what otherwise would be a boring layout. Condition wise the course was in very nice shape tee to green. Greens rolled smooth at a medium-slow pace. Greens were very receptive to holding approach shots and getting pitch shots to check up.

Fairways were rated at an 8. Not super lush like Maderas but certainly enjoyable to hit off of.
Tee boxes were level and lush. No issues. Sand in the bunkers in the morning was damp but other than that bunkers were fine.

La Costa Champions track is another quality San Diego course worth playing.

Golf Playing Conditions 5.96 GOOD
Golf Playing Conditions 5.96 GOOD

Great time out at Eagle Glen Golf Club with fellow GK’ers Thursday. Teed up early morning, 6:10am start (finished in under 4 hours), was June gloom most of the day but cleared up for the last few holes.

I love the layout and get excited to play it in Spring/Summer especially when the fairways turn green. They have a type of Bermuda turf in the fairways that craves warm weather to flourish.

It’s been an oddly cold Spring/Early Summer so it took much longer than normal for the fairways to pop green. I know they have been doing extra work with the fairways over the last few years such as aerating them and giving them more water.

From reading reviews there is an improvement. They are green now and they will be improving as the Summer goes on. However at this time the fairways are mostly firm and thin. Eagle Glen Golf Club does have very good greens (firm, mostly smooth, medium speed) and good all other conditions, combined with an excellent clubhouse, service and food. It’s a great golf experience I highly recommend. If you play Monday – Wednesday check out the rocking GK Coupon deal posted.

I’m going to post some updated photos next week.

Played with my usual threesome on Sunday the 23rd of June for a hot deal of $10 per player off GolfNow. Pulling up as I stated in my review of this course last year, you’re presented with a course that seems below average. However once you’re on the grounds, the club house (recently renovated last year or so), the bar and grille, the ample putting greens, private instruction area near the 10th hole and the medium sized practice tee, you realize that’s not the case. The service was great. We walked up and were offered to tee off whenever we were ready. So, we did.

The Review

Golf Playing Conditions 7.25 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.25 GREAT

The tee boxes were manicured well, with the mow patterns visible in the fairways and greens from the tee boxes. The boxes were all lush with no severe damage nor visible need of leveling. The fairways were firm but not rock hard and often presented your fairway finding drive sitting up in the grass. The rough was noticeably different in the way it was mowed height wise, but did not present any difficulty in finding the ball nor with your club selection to accurately hit the green. It was kinda just, different than the fairway. Not bad though. The greens were very pristine, no severe pitchmark damage and the roll on putts was fair and true. What I was most impressed with, was the definition of the mowing pattern on the fairways and greens. You usually don’t see that at a cheap, retirement community golf course.

Parting Thoughts

This course is fun, and worth the summer rates. I know, from what I’ve heard , that this course is impossible to get on when the snowbirds are in town and it’s always packed when the weather is below that certain temperature that I can’t quite figure out, probably 75. My preferred golfing temperature is 100 plus, so it’s always empty and a great day out here. It’s a good test for all your clubs, a chance to shoot a low score and fun to have a course to yourself during the summer. Worth the green fee for sure.
