FREE Birthday GOLF Ideas
Just a shout out to the Crossings, for the very generous birthday gift. Took advantage of their free round on my birthday today. Played with a father older son pair, teeing off at 6:45am for a 4.5 hour round. Don and Gordon were great to play with, and made me feel comfortable joining their every Sunday morning round.
The amazing thing is the round was completely free, didn’t have to pay for anything. Included GPS equipped cart. The feeling from the bag drop, locker room, starter to marshals was private club like. Rack rate for my round was $110. . . .
Happy birthday to me… going to experience first hand exactly what benefits different courses provide on B-Day rounds.
Have cleared my schedule and am playing every day this week M-F, taking advantage of numerous B-Day rounds this week and next. So anyone who would like to hook up this week, here is the schedule….
Tuesday AM Mile Square Players walking on early. Tuesday PM Mile Square Classic, 207pm with Stickboy & Dconnally.
Wed AM Legends 720am with Rat-Patrol. Wed PM Dos Lagos walking on, currently wide open after 2.
Thur AM Shorecliffs probably walking on early. Thur PM Crossings @ Carlsbad probably walking on late. Both courses currently wide open but will only pair me up with less than a 4some after they book, no single bookings.
Staying overnight in S.D., then Fri AM 657a @ Riverwalk. Fri PM 145p @ Riverview.
This week, I am playing a bunch of courses I have either never played or have not played in decades, so should be fun experiences…

Found a great $60+fee deal on GolfNow, with a 1:52 tee time on Sat., 10/27. Free range balls at your leisure. Teed off 15 minutes late, behind a group of 4 juniors (8-12 yrs) with their parents driving/coaching. Dreadfully slow for two holes, they then picked up the pace after some encouragement no doubt from the marshals. The youngsters were pretty good, just too much coaching! Wasn’t expecting we’d get all 18 in, but we did, just under last light, with POP at 4hrs 10mins.
The Review
Cart-path only on the entire course, as they are still keeping the course fairly damp post punching and over-seeding. Course was closed for a month, and was evidently just opened a week ago.
Tees were very green, lush and level, but a bit soft. Fairways were lush, green and few divots to contend with. Good lies throughout. Rough was long and a nightmare – a mix of large areas of kikuyu and something else. Penal and tough to hit from, but even harder to find balls, unless you were within 5-10 feet, as they would sit down. The three guys I played with were 300-yard bombers, and probably lost over 15 balls total, with most of them just being lost in the rough somewhere!
Sand quality was great, but players ahead seemed to think a sand-butler would come by and rake their tracks, as at least 10 bunkers were un-raked. Pretty sad, really.
Greens were pretty good, but not fantastic. Several were lightly sanded, but all showed no signs of the punching. Receptive and held shots well. Rolled smooth and medium-fast. Way too many freshly unrepaired ball marks, however.
The 3 guys I played with all were riding the Phat Cycles. They loved them and looked like a lot of fun. Too bad it was CPO. Only downside of those things is that there is no GPS on them, which for first-timers on the course, you don’t get to see water hazards, etc.
Parting Thought
Great, friendly service all around. From free valet-parking to start, check-in and final club-drop off. Nice bar/lounge with super-huge TV to watch the Dodgers blow a ‘sure-fire’ win in game 4 in the World Series. 😉

Meet & Play was originally conceived as a way to get golfers together playing golf in a less structured and more informal manner. Just like playing as a single at a golf course, Meet & Play pairs you with other golfers with tee times.
Have a tee time where your buddies backed out? Still want to play? No worries. Post it here on Meet & Plays and find players interested in play a little golf with you.
Since it is informal there are no sponsored GK contests or prizes; only the opportunity to play with other golfers who have a tee time.
Join with other golfers playing golf in your area. Meet & Play outlines available tee times that members in our community have space available. Think of it as ride-sharing without the transportation and more playing golf.
Communicate with other golfers through the internal GK Messaging system.
