Played GK cup 15 match here with t8fish. My first time here, holy cow! Now I know why he recommended this track! Will definitely treat myself to more Oak Quarry in the future.

There were limited carts today, averaging 20-30min delays to the midday slots. The carts have really good GPS, a must need for better shot planning here. Winter in SoCal is still here, but Oak Quarry is fairing well overall. Tee boxes are healthy. Fairways are consistent and run out is incredible on some holes, downright dangerous on others if you don’t keep this in mind.

Thank goodness the rough is well maintained and thriving right now. It is kept short enough to not be penal itself, but just long enough to be your friend…a good friend!
AARG(areas around greens) are also well maintained, making good lies and confidence with your weapons(wedges).

Bunkers are just like what my buddy t8fish stated earlier, I found two fairway bunkers that day and they were on the thinner side.

Greens were mostly matching the overall speed and break of the two practice greens(lower more than the upper), so spend some quality pre-round time here and your lag putting will thrive. They are winter firm but still able to hold most of what you will rain down on them.

A visually stunning layout, but even better, it is stimulating to the real golf tactician in you. High value.

You have a golf trek planned through SoCal? Seriously consider this on your agenda…better than Disnyland. Recommended.

Teed off at 9:20 in the men’s club outing today. Overall conditions are still pretty solid, maybe a tick less than my last review but still nice. As expected the pace was a little slow but not as bad as I expected. Forgot to look at the time but it was less than 5 hours but probably not that much less.

Greens still rolling pretty well, maybe not as quick as previously but still at a nice pace. A few unrepaired ball marks and a few that were repaired improperly.

Fairways are great to hit from. The divots out there are starting to mount up so it would be nice if golfers would replace it or fill it with the bottle mixture.

Rough is still down but make no mistake there are places that are not great to hit from. I let my ego get the better of me on one hole. I thought I could get a hybrid on it and we’ll I’ll leave it at that.

Bunkers still soft. One guy in our group had a lie on the 3rd hole that looks like someone threw it in there. You could barely see the ball it was so buried.

Golf Playing Conditions 6.75 GOOD
Golf Playing Conditions 6.75 GOOD

I played this past Friday afternoon, teeing off about 1 PM on an absolutely PERFECT day.

First thing to note, Goat Hill Park just finished a complete renovation of the 12th green so there’s a temporary green right at the aiming pole (215-ish yards?). When you drive/walk from the temp green up the hill to 13 you get a look at the new complex. This is my home course and I absolutely LOVE the change. I hated that green and in my opinion, the new design knocked it out of the park. I asked and it’s probably going to open around early April.

As for the rest of the course, the main thing I can say is the greens are awesome. I know that a local high end private course donated a green roller and other equipment and it absolutely shows. Greens are the best I’ve ever seen them out there. They are quick and pure and still hold. There was a good breeze going and at the end of the day they were almost too good. Being in the wrong spot was deadly.

There are 4-5 new tee boxes and the turf is fantastic and level, but like most new turf installations, it’s a bit firm to get a tee in the ground.

I never had a bad lie in the fairway but it’s a bit dry as we haven’t had much rain. I hit some wayward drives and found areas where the addition of turf about a year ago saved my tail. Really a good add to the design.

The Goat is what it is. A funky layout (absolutely fantastic for Match Play which I was playing) but it does what i feel ALL muni’s should focus on….have exceptional greens and playable conditions otherwise.

The POP at the Goat is always off the charts. We went through as a four ball in about 3 hours and then hung out with some music playing, the firepit going and a bunch of people laughing and telling stories.

My wife and I played in a SLO County Tournament. It was a team game, best net on 1, two best nets on 2, three on three, then go back to 1 best net on 4. Doris, with her 34 handicap, carried all of us.

Course was in good condition despite being newly purchased earlier this week. They had all new people working there, and several workmen around maintaining the course. Hopefully the rates won’t increase.

It is one of the best courses on the Central Coast and an OK value, $50.00 including cart and range balls for our tournaments. I was in just one bunker, and the sand was quite deep. But the ball came out as expected.

My rating came out lower than I anticipated more fairly 6.2. 1/29 using GK coupon $22 real friendly welcome and easy check in with directions to go when ready so started about 40 min ahead of 9 am time since it was quite open. Comfortable 340 POP with some delays hunting down a few errant shots in the sand and brush. Started out with about a 1/2 club wind that was up to 2 clubs by the back and finished the last 6 in 3 clubs. Most wind was cross with only a couple of holes where it was dead straight. As I heard quoted purportedly from some Scotsman “if its na windy its na golf” appropriate for the links design.

The Review

Fairways are patchy with some very thin areas a few bare spots and then some ok grass and some areas that were sodded seem to have taken hold. Still pretty dry and dormant this time of year. No rough except for some areas near the greens but fairly dry and whispy. Fairways are bordered by bare sandy/dirt which is adjacent to the brush or gorse.

Tees mostly level some thin some with good cover and some major divot damage on the 3s where it appeared the markers had not been moved on a daily basis.

Bunkers were in various conditions with some good some thin.

Greens played better than they looked with some having multi shades of green and some looking to be rather thin like having been mowed too closely and not recovering quickly. Speed medium fast mostly smooth. Some pins took advantage of the slope or were near change in level so a shot that was off by a foot left you 20 feet away.

Grass range, basic GPS but helpful info about distances to trouble.

Word from the pro shop is that more improvements are in the works.

Golf Playing Conditions 9.65 IMMACULATE
Golf Playing Conditions 9.65 IMMACULATE

I had a couple of minor issues with the GK App at Spanish Bay and Johnny told me there is a new update. So I used that as an excuse to go play today so I could test out the app some more. I chose Quail Lodge because they do a ton of awareness and fundraisers during October for Breast Cancer Awareness month. As a side note they are doing a $50 special on Friday with half the money going to a local Cancer foundation. As of this morning there were only a couple of spots open on the tee sheet. At a third of the price, I’m surprised there were any still left.

Quail is always known for its excellent staff friendliness, great course conditions and they are also dog friendly. I arrived early, dropped off my bag with the attendant/starter and hit the all grass range (balls included) The range does have a 200 yard max so no driver or 3 wood.

Thanks to a nice tip to the attendant, he got me out about 30 minutes early. I made my way through a couple groups zipping through the front nine in an hour. The back nine was a completely different story, but I still finished in 3 hours.

The Review

The greens were a perfect 10. Extremely smooth, pitch mark free and gorgeous dark green in color. Greens were rolling very fast. Definitely the fastest I’ve seen them here.

They are in the middle of verti-cutting some of the fairways. Fairways are always top notch at Quail Lodge and once all of the maintenance work is done on them, I’m sure they will all be at a 9-10 rating.

No issues with the tee boxes. Divots had been smoothly filled in to keep the box level. All tee boxes had plenty of lush grass to hit off of.

Sand traps were absolutely spectacular. A definite 9.5 rating. I was in 5-6 green-side bunkers and all were top notch.

Final Thoughts

Even though 16 of the holes at Quail are completely flat, it doesn’t feel that way. Maybe it’s the mountains that boarder up against both sides of the course or just the great routing of the holes. The track is anything but boring. A definite must play and the hotel is an excellent place to stay at as well.

Played today (1/23) on a beautiful day. The course is in very good winter condition.

Greens: excellent condition, starter said the greens are at a 13. I believe him.

Fairways: good winter condition, some bare spots.

Rough: 1-3″ high, very playable.

Traps: My only complaint; many traps were hard with no sand. Might be prepping them for new sand in the spring, I hope.

POP: under 4 hours.

Good customer service. Recommend.

The Review

Golf Playing Conditions 6.70 GOOD
Golf Playing Conditions 6.70 GOOD

The course conditions were pleasantly surprising. Apparently this course is managed by OB Sports for the city of Tucson, and OB has been doing a great job with some of the Phoenix municipal courses I usually play during the past 2 years. Fairways had a great over-seed, played firm, greens were fairly smooth and fast, sand was fine. Typical dormant Bermuda rough. Really nothing to complain about with conditions for a municipal , though the fairways near the ponds were completely covered in goose turds.

After a glance at the scorecard, I had decided on playing the yellow tees (5,843 yards) due to it being cold, and the whites (6391) having 4 par 4 holes at 420+ which usually isn’t enjoyable for me. The yellows gave me some good variety, except the 3 of the par 3 holes played about the same (155-160ish). There is some elevation change throughout the course.

I originally had a tee time around 8:15. Staff member said the area the course is in usually gets much colder overnight than the rest of the city. Accordingly, there was a 45 minute frost delay. Due to cancellations, the starter was able to move me ahead, joining two other walkers as the second group off. The first group left us in the dust after few holes, and we finished 18 in about 3:10 as a walking threesome. Very easy course to walk.

Final Thought

Overall, nothing particularly memorable here, just decent affordable walking golf. The course has a small snack bar-type restaurant, and a beverage cart was out on the course.
