Golf Playing Conditions 8.45 GREAT

Was 2nd off yesterday and we finished a hair less than 4 hours. I looked as we finished 17 and the group behind us was finishing on 15 so they finished about 2 holes behind. With as much rain as we had during the week I thought it would be soggy out there. Other than a few areas it wasn’t as bad as I expected. The new irrigation that was installed seems to be doing the trick.

I thought the greens were pretty smooth but a tad slow. Maybe with the rain during the week and expected for the weekend and next week they weren’t able to mow them as much. They actually didn’t look like they needed mowing but we kept coming up short on many putts.

Fairways were pretty good. You can tell some of the crew had put down some mix in the divots in popular collection areas (e.g. bottom of the hill on 13). Still a few unrepaired divots but generally good to hit from.

Rough is down and I even dared to hit a 3 wood out of there. There are some thicker areas however. The morning dew did make hitting some shorter shots around the green a challenge but got better as the day went along.

Sand is still very soft. One guy in our group had 2 very very buried lies. I got lucky since one popped out of its mark. Whew.

Overall decent conditions for the time being with maintenance less than a month a way.

Teed off at 9:20 in the men’s club outing today. Overall conditions are still pretty solid, maybe a tick less than my last review but still nice. As expected the pace was a little slow but not as bad as I expected. Forgot to look at the time but it was less than 5 hours but probably not that much less.

Greens still rolling pretty well, maybe not as quick as previously but still at a nice pace. A few unrepaired ball marks and a few that were repaired improperly.

Fairways are great to hit from. The divots out there are starting to mount up so it would be nice if golfers would replace it or fill it with the bottle mixture.

Rough is still down but make no mistake there are places that are not great to hit from. I let my ego get the better of me on one hole. I thought I could get a hybrid on it and we’ll I’ll leave it at that.

Bunkers still soft. One guy in our group had a lie on the 3rd hole that looks like someone threw it in there. You could barely see the ball it was so buried.

Overall, I thought just average conditions. Aside from some great vistas along the coastline, felt at times like we were playing any other city course in OC / LA.

Tee boxes were average to good, no real serious issues. Maintained and mostly very level.

Fairways: First, the width of fairway cut grass was very narrow, and conditions were a coin flip. Good in spots, very thin or clumpy in others. Rough was not overly penal, but was still difficult to play from, and with very narrow fairways, I played most of the round from the rough. When I did find fairway, was usually a thin lie. A little disappointing.

Greens were VERY hard, firm and mostly fast. Our group, did not fix many ball marks, as they were tough to find with the firmness, and good shots seemed to run off green consistently. Also a little disappointing.

Found a couple of green-side bunkers and all were very full of sand, in some cases almost too deep. Needed a perfect strike to fly ball far enough.

Layout is interesting enough, 14-16 were amazing, otherwise unspectacular and flat. Very enjoyable, but not the experience I expected.

$45 booking fee added to $110 green fee for non resident. POP was 4:25, (10:50 start) but seemed slower. Guess our group just played a little faster then groups in front, as we waited on several holes.

Service on course (beverage cart and at the turn) was excellent, however, kind of short and not super friendly at check in.

Poor driving range (mats, narrow, and below average targets), decent chipping green adjacent, and (2) putting greens near #1 North.

Lot of low flying jets from nearby Miramar base, which was cool for a while, but not when trying to pull the trigger on a shot.

I’d play again, but would need a deal of some kind on green fees.

Played a couple of times over the past couple of weeks. Now that the South is under renovation this will be the go to course now. With the renovations to make it easier on the starter they have us going off on 10. So it’s kind of like the Old North. I’m not sure if they will continue this but I would expect this while hole 1 and 2 on the South are shut down. The starter is having to drive out to 3.

Greens are pretty good. I was surprised with how much rain the amount of roll I was still getting on some relatively short chips I hit. The par 3s show more improperly fixed ball marks but still roll really good. Rolled quite a few by and left myself some come-backer knee-knockers.

Fairways are good too but some divot damage with golfers not filling them in. Maintenance guys have filled in thief fair share.

Rough isn’t that long but man can that ball settle down in some spots making it difficult to even get wedges on them.

Bunkers were a little damp but OK.

Pace was great and on another note several trees have fallen with the rain.

Played here today (12/19) with a 1pm twilight tee time and got about 15 solid holes in before the darkness gave way. South is well on its way to being ready for the Farmers in every way possible, from grandstand setup to course conditions. Today was by far the thickest I have seen the rough in the 25+ times I’ve played and it was every bit as tough as you can imagine.

The Review

Tee boxes: Excellent shape. As anyone who plays here knows, guys love to try the tips and today was no different, so the green and taupe boxes were clean. Didn’t have any issues driving the tee into the turf and the ground was solid, mowed level and tight.

Fairways: A joy to hit from and visually stunning. It’s clear when the City steps up the maintenance work before the pros come in January. They didn’t offer tremendous roll as they were a bit damp, but not a bad lie all day!

Rough: Hell. As mentioned before, I’ve never personally seen it this thick and with this many grass clippings blanketing the course. I’m surprised pace wasn’t any slower as everyone was having a hard time locating balls that I with 20/15 vision couldn’t see feet away from me. Bullish and thick-headed players got hilariously humbled and that was a treat in itself.

Bunkers: Perhaps the weakest part of the course today and they were still good. Some had damp areas but even the three I was in had enough sand to get out of. With a new batch of sand, these will be perfect.

Greens: Near perfect. The tourists in my group couldn’t believe how green they were considering we don’t get much rain. They were rolling extremely fast, with smooth and tricky breaks. The pros will be in for a treat!

Final Thought

ETC: Starter was friendly. Cart attendant came around three times and was also friendly, even as the prices for everything were usual Torrey. Pace of play was excellent today and was set to be just under 4.5 hours, which for here is mindbogglingly quick. Course currently is Cart Path Only (CPO) sadly but if you can get out, do so!!

Course is in very good to excellent condition.

Tee boxes good. Fairways are green and lush, and they have the grass a bit longer so not a lot of roll. Rough is starting to be punishing again – it’s very lush and they’re growing it a bit longer, and our group had a number of lost balls even though we had a good idea where the ball went into the deep stuff. Greens are very good, and were soft enough to hold longer shots in but rolled quite true and quickly.

Only issue was the green side bunkers, where they’re over-watering everything around the greens and as a result all the bunkers we were in were very hard sand that was packed together. Fairway bunkers were soft and fluffy but the green side bunkers were hard and firm, just the opposite of what one would like.

If they get the grounds crew in work the sand better, the course would be in the best shape I’ve seen it outside of what the PGA players get to enjoy.

Went off a little before 7 and finished in 4:15. Check in was smooth and the fence is fixed in the range so that is now open. The practice green by the range is still not open yet.

Greens are in fantastic shape and they are rolling very quick. I raced several putts well by the hole. A few too many fresh and old ball marks that were not repaired properly but with the amount of play it gets I expect this.

Fairway are nice. Mowed nice and great to hit from. There are probably a few areas that need to be addressed but I don’t remember any one in our group having an issue from a bad break.

Rough is not the place you want to be. It is thick and I was told it was thicker last week. I almost lost my first shot. One guy in our group lost 2 on the first 9 and I swear I saw both of them but never could find it when we got there. This is probably why rounds will take longer due to searching for errant shots.

I was in a couple of bunkers. The green side bunkers are great, nice sand and freshly raked. The 2 fairway bunkers were quite the opposite. There were weeds growing in it. Didn’t look like it had been raked in quite a while which resulted in golfers giving up on raking their footprints (yes I found one).

Tees are pretty good. I noticed some of the forward tees seemed like the grass was still growing in.

Overall a pleasant experience and well worth the resident fee.

Golf Playing Conditions 8.40 GREAT

Punished myself in the wind on Sunday. Walked on as a single and got right out, showed up at 8:55 and got paired up with 3 great guys (all brothers) at 9:10. POP was phenomenal!! finished at 1pm, incredible, never waited on the group in front and never pushed from behind. Perhaps the chilly windy day kept some people away and maybe the ever increasing higher green fees ($78 for resident to walk). Course is in overall good condition.

Teeboxes were just fine. Great coverage and level, never an issue.

Fairways were darn near perfect, had great lies all day.

Bunkers were nice, not perfect, but never had an issue getting out, found a few of them, one was plugged about a foot below the lip on 14 right hand side of the green, was able to get it out, though.

Rough was surprisingly cut down and wasn’t too much of an issue, easiest I’ve seen it in a long time.

Greens were pretty good. They held shots if they were struck perfectly, but they seemed a little more firm than usual, most had some roll out. They were their normal fast speed, but they were tough to read, none of us could seem to get a handle on them. None of us holed many putts beyond 5FT, crazy. Quite a few greens had many unfixed ball marks, kind of upsetting. Number 4 is temporary about 50yds short of the normal green, It’s not really a green at all, it’s the same as the fairway and it’s not marked very well. Oh well, I finally made a par at 4, lol. I’d be pretty pissed if I paid $200 and had a temp green, though.

Saw the bev cart a couple of times. The pins were in super difficult positions. It dawned on me late in the round that they seemed to be placed in similar Sunday positions to the Farmers/PGA spots. Very tough with long irons to go for the pins. Overall, had a great day and I need to get out there more often.
