Greenskeeper.org proudly presents it’s Best Playing Conditions Awards for 2017.

Not to be confused with “Worth the Green Fee,” “Best Playing Conditions” is awarded to golf courses open to the public listed on Greenskeeper.org that stand out above the rest with our site users at providing consistently the best greens, fairways, rough, tee boxes and bunkers around.

The job of the superintendent is the life blood of the golf course industry and most important contributing factor to enjoying a golf experience.  It takes enormous dedication, resources and expertise by a superintendent and their staff to provide excellent turf conditions.  A golf course is a living, breathing organism whose health is constantly in flux. Greenskeeper.org’s trademark and creed, “Know Before You Go”®, centers on communicating these current playing conditions. The rating system used on Greenskeeper.org is in part created by superintendents.

How Awards Winners Are Determined

Golf Course reviews and ratings submitted by our 70,000+ Greenskeeper.org community are tabulated over 12 months. Winners are determined for each area.

We divide awards into 11 sections —  Inland Empire, Los Angeles County, Orange County, Palm Springs Area, San Diego County, Santa Barbara County, Ventura County, Southern California, Central California, Northern California and Southern Nevada.

We provide the list below in no particular order.  This is done on purpose.  Any golf course that provides outstanding conditions in their region should not overshadow other golf courses simply because of their location.  For most avid golfers, the playing experience is what matters.  Knowing where to play in your area is important.

Editor’s Note:  Johnny GK and Greenskeeper.Org has been recognized by the California Golf Course Owners Association as Good for the Game of Golf in 2017.  Shows you that both golfers and golf course operators understand the benefit of working with Greenskeeper.Org.  We are the RESOURCE where avid and casual golfers come to make their decision where to play their next round.  “Know Before You Go”® with Greenskeeper.Org.  You’ll be glad you did.

Journey at Pechanga

Temecula, CA
Reviewed by:  sbarajasjr, San Diego

Played here 2/12/2017 with fellow GK members Nat P., Jon P., and all the way from Michigan Bill A.   We were using an UnderPar deal for $90 each with a free replay round. Unfortunately today was a tale of highs and lows with Journey. The course was nearly immaculate; every aspect was dripping in lush green conditions and visually stunning, however the entire course was Cart Path Only (CPO) and made for a round that was a few minutes short of 6 hours. It was by far the longest round of golf I have ever played and had it not been for the perfect conditions and amazing company, this would have been a complete waste of a trip. The entire property is under construction so getting to the course was a bit tricky too. The actual course condition review:

Tee-boxes: The “worst” aspect of the course but they were still in good condition. There wasn’t much in the way of chewed up boxes and because the course offers several tee options, I think the turf sees far less damage than the courses that only have Red/White/Blue.

Fairways: Absolutely stunning. The recent rains really left them in great shape. Not muddy and not soggy, granted there wasn’t a heck of a lot of roll but the lies were all great.

Rough: Wonderful condition but tough to hit out of. The biggest test at this course is always the areas just outside the rough, but the rough itself was still penal.

Bunkers: I was only in two but both had good sand coverage that allowed for good shots. There are ample rakes in each bunker and they looked to be maintained well.

Greens: Wonderful roll and pretty quick in my opinion. A shame to see so many groups leave marks on them though without the slightest desire to fix. Visually not as great as the rest of the course but they really rolled true.

ETC: Staff was extremely friendly. Carts here are top-class with wonderful GPS. Waters, towels, and coolers all provided. Cart girls were ever present. Didn’t see a single marshal though I am not sure that would have prevented slow play today. 6 hour round made it hard to enjoy to its fullest and CPO all day led to serious fatigue on a course that couldn’t offer walking as an option even if they wanted to. Food options at the turn and in the restaurant were tasty. On a great deal, this is one of the best in So. Cal.
