Rode the blues this morning 1/13/2020 on a beautiful colder morning with little to no wind. POP was great thanks to the starter letting me tee off on the back nine first to avoid multiple groups that were on holes 1 and 2.

Conditions were similar to my last round out here about 3 weeks ago.

The greens once again were the highlight of the show. Super quick putting and chipping wise yet holding beautifully with well struck irons with spin. They had some really challenging pins this morning where you could see putts struck a little to firm rolling a good 6 feet or so by the hole. Green rating 8.5/10.

Fairways were mostly green. Would say 70 percent lush, 30 percent thin. Didn’t have a bad lie in the fairway. Rated 7/10

Tees were positioned at the back of every tee box which was cool and gave other areas a chance to heal. Most tees were level where you could find a good spot. Rated 7/10

Rough was mostly mowed down in a uniform fashion. Some of the rough is lush, some spots thinner. Rated 6.5/10

Sand bunkers have improved some. They are actually all raked and maintained beautifully, they just need more sand overall in the green=side traps. Rated 6/10.

Course is super fun to play with some nice tight tee shots, forced carries, lakes and a good portion of ESA’s to navigate. Some nice birdie holes and some challenging holes as well.

Recommended.

Golf Playing Conditions 7.18 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.18 GREAT

Had a 18 hole playing lesson this morning with a student. 3rd out in perfect weather after the early morning chill. POP 3 hr 50 riding.

The greens today reminded me some of when this course first opened. Fast, firm yet holding higher compressed irons with spin. Hard to believe that they verticut and sanded 5 days ago. These greens were awesome! Rating them a 8/10. I can see these greens getting into the 9 /10 range soon.

Fairways are still visibly green with decent coverage. They are becoming firmer as the colder weather approaches–just like this course is supposed to play–links style. Fairway rating 7/10

Tees were nice and level with good coverage. 7.5/10

Today we were able to throw some extra balls in some of the bunkers. Most of the bunkers were firm like they usually are here. Some of the bunkers were wet like they had the sprinklers on or near some of the traps before the course opened.

Green-side rough is still beautiful with the fairway rough being more unpredictable.

I saw a lot of maintenance workers this morning which I always like to see working on the course.

If you love great challenging green complexes give Rustic a try. For sure the maintenance yellow alert can be removed.

Highly would recommend this course. My student who is also a men’s club member loves playing out here.

Golf Course Playing Conditions 6.53 GOOD

Had not played here in quite a while (Over 5 years) so was excited to return. I’ve never played well at this course, and sad to admit, today was no different. Without local knowledge, it was a real struggle for our entire foursome.

Great pace of play – teed off at 8:30am and never waited once. In all fairness, our group played collectively so poorly, I’m not surprised we never caught the twosome in front of us, but then again, we were never caught by the riding twosome behind us. ( We are all walkers & seniors)

I was disappointed in the areas surrounding the greens which had been recently punched. Because of the “furrows” it created, made it nearly impossible to putt from off the greens, which is the most unique feature of this course Greens were just OK, but much too slow for my taste. I know this course is highly regarded by almost everyone, but while it certainly is a wonderful track, for me to make the 110+ mile drive, there are other courses I would choose to play. (La Purisima tomorrow being one of them)

Well after Elkins, I realized I was very close to Tierra Rejada and since I had missed the recent GK Guru play and reading the recent reviews, over I went.

Check in was easy/fast. Got right out before a 4 some and played the front 9 fast, only seeing a 3 some on # 3 and they let me through on # 4. I think John’s review says all you need to know about the conditions. I, like John said, love the par 3’s (including # 17). And I had no problem with #13.

The only issue I had today, was with the marshal. He saw me waiting on # 11 and asked how it was going? I told him that the 3 some in front was slow and their music (yes music) was annoying. And the 4 ladies in front of the 3 some, looked like any one of them might collapse at any moment? All he said was “OK have a good round.” Passed it on to the Pro shop, for what it was worth. Except for the marshal, customer service was excellent.

This is a great layout, but you really need to play the right tees for your level of play, to get the maximum enjoyment. Recommended.

Golf Playing Conditions 6.28 GOOD

I played here about 6 months ago and was thrilled with the conditions this time around.

The highlight of the course, as per usual, was the greens. They were fantastic. would rate 8.5/10 due to some inconsistencies in speed and receptiveness. They rolled true and generally held shots well.

The fairways were lush and provided a great hitting surface. There were some dry spots but mostly on the steeper slopes in the fairways. Not necessarily bad since it prevented the ball from stopping on those steep slopes.

The tee boxes were good as well.

Was in a few bunkers throughout the day. the green-side bunkers were stocked with nice sand, fairway bunkers had good sand as well but were spotted with some pebbles.

Overall a fun day with the gurus and would like to get back out to TR soon.

Rode the Blues this morning 5/29/2018 for a GK guru round teeing off at 10:05am with JohnnyGK, MrKich and Barkydog. POP was 4 hrs 40 minutes. Weather was beautiful low 70’s with maybe a 1 club breeze on the back nine. Had not played out here in 15 months. Tierra Rejada’s range is closed for a couple weeks as they are fixing the fence around the range. They have a very huge and sloped putting green and a separate nice smaller chipping green. Down below on their range they also have a nice short game chipping area with a practice bunker.

The greens were very shiny green, soft and were putting medium speed. They had some minor poa circles creeping in that could effect putts. For the most part the greens ran true. We fixed a couple ballmarks here and there. Green rating 7/10.

The fairways were more lush than thin. 75/25 lush to thin. Some divot damage in the low lying and common areas like #10 fairway. I thought they were in pretty darn good shape. It gets hot in this area and it looks like the course is trying to water where they can. Fairway rating 7/10

The tees were semi-lush with mostly level teeing grounds. There were a few tees where you had to spend time hunting for a stance but you could always almost find it. Some divot damage on the par 3 tees that I tried my best to fill in with sand. Rating 6.5/10.

The rough was low in most places just off the fairway and high in others like where my buddy was just off of #1 fairway. The further you got off the fairway the rougher and less predictable it got. Rated 6/10

Was in one greenside bunker on #7 that contained raked firmer sand.

The layout here is an interesting one on the front–very hilly elevated tee boxes with small target landing areas. I think the front is tougher and has a lot more character than the back nine. It’s 2 different golf courses. Some fun character holes on the back as well like 11 and 14. Better hit it real straight here to score.

Its only a mile from home so for sure I will be back on birthday rounds or rounds that I can land a deal on. Recommended for a fun and challenging option in the area.

Playing Conditions 6.42 GOOD

Out this afternoon 4/16/2018 walking the Blues joined by my buddy Brian paying their mid day walking rate of $29.00. Pace of Play (POP) was 3 hrs 50 minutes. Weather was laughable (thought I would chance the forecast as it called for wind around here yesterday and it was fairly calm)–we had a 30mph + hurricane swirling wind for all of the back nine and most of the front nine–it was a fun first 13 holes and the last 5 holes were crazy–hitting 4 woods into number 14 and 16 for our second shots and barely getting them to the fringe even after smoked drives–hats blowing off, etc.–LOL.

The greens were quick and firm and rolling beautiful–you need to be spinning the ball here or hitting high trajectory irons. More and more poa creeping into them but still in great shape. Rated 8/10

The tees are in very good shape. Level and lush–rated 8/10.

Fairways are 50/50 lush to thin. Rated 6/10. They are playable–you do get a ton of roll still if you hit the ball low.

Greenside rough is in very good shape–lush and thicker. Rated 8/10

The rough lining most fairways is very poor, dry and hardpan in places. Rated 5/10

Rustic is fun to play even with the crazy wind conditions today.

Out this afternoon 4/2/2018 walking the Blues with buddies Mack and Brian joined by a nice single John. POP 4 hrs. Weather was epic scoring weather–other than a strong breeze the first 3 holes the remaining 15 holes were postcard–mid 60’s with hardly any wind. Paid $22.00 walking–super deal. Nice staff in clubhouse let us go 10 minutes early at 2:20pm.

The fairways are making a comeback. The last couple times I have played here they were very dry. Today I saw a lot more green than in previous rounds. Sure they contain some different tuffs of grass and the fairways are not super lush but they are getting into their green spring state. This course historically has great fairways from April usually through August. Current rating is a 6/10.

The greens were in good shape–maybe a 10.5 on the stimp. Downhillers still need to be touched with precision. Not a ton of ball marks and rolling medium to quick speed. They hold high irons and chips with spin nicely. Rated 7.5/10.

I thought the tees were the highlight of the course. Super lush and mostly level. In very good shape–rated 8/10.

Greenside rough super green and lush and in great shape. Rated 8/10.

The poorest part of the course remains the rough just outside many of the fairways. Its very dry and hardpan in most areas. Rated 4.5/10.

With the fairways starting to grow in nicely and the current shape of the tees and greens I would recommend this course to anyone.

Great challenging layout that is a blast to play.
