Quail Lodge & Golf Club Carmel California Golf Course Rating

Played Quail Lodge 12/4/16 along with fellow GK Guru Krajon01 as part of the GK Review Guru outing. Quail Lodge is beautiful, 18 hole golf course nestled in the Carmel Valley, about 10 minutes from Pebble Beach and 17 Mile Drive.

The course is perfectly tucked into the canyon between the Santa Lucia Preserve to the west and, and Carmel Highlands to the east. The course wraps around an established development of homes on the front and back side along with the lodge residences, with the Carmel River snaking around sections of the course.

The course plays at 6400+ from the tips, and is a mix of challenging par 3’s, narrow par 4’s and doglegged par 5’s.

The course is on par with what you would expect when it comes to playing in the Monterey Peninsula. Fairways, greens, bunker complex’s, and overall playing surface are exquisite, and as good or close to the Pebble Beach Company Courses.

To me, the signature of of this course is the small postage stamp greens which are firm, fast, pure, and true. These greens rival championship courses frequented by the PGA Tour.

Another feature that stands out to me is the bunker complex’s which were fair, yet provided a challenge with their depth and size throughout the course.

I enjoyed the course as a whole, from check-in to finish. The starter, cart attendants, and pro shop staff are welcoming, and very informative.

While technically a resort course with private membership, guests do not need to stay at the lodge to play.

The course is affordable, fun, fair and challenging. I cant wait to go back and play it again.

Really beautiful course on the sunny side of the Carmel area. The course was in absolutely beautiful shape. Very neat contours inside of the Carmel Valley canyons with great views. The course was narrow and quite demanding off the tee. The fairways of poa annua grass were absolutely immaculate. If you hit it in the fairway you were guaranteed an outstanding lie. And the greens, as you’ll often see in the Monterey area, we’re very small and guarded by difficult and deep bunkers. But they rolled beautifully.

This was another really great experience of golf in the Monterey area. And the pace of play was so fast it allowed for some touring of that gorgeous part of the state after the round is over. If you’re going to go to Monterey and play a few rounds add this to your list.

Why Did We Expand the Regions?

It’s simple.  Greenskeeper.org has been growing.  We expanded the number of regions because golfers like you have reported about golf course conditions of the golf courses you play.  In short golfers come to us if they want informative, relevant golf course reviews and it’s all due to your, our GK Community’s, diligence.  You let us know your experiences and well if we hear about it everyone else does too.

Why so Many Regions?

Golf is an experience and every experience is unique.  Different golf courses offer different experiences.  What we look for in golf course reviews offers a little insight into every golf course we play.  Not just one point of view but many, and by providing many different points of view you get a clearer picture of what each golf course has to offer.  To that end we felt it necessary to provide regions with their own highlighted golf course.  Local players can enjoy the fact there is a great facility they can play just around their corner.  Golfers looking to experience new golf courses can play these and experience first-hand these unique golf experiences.  Put simply, we allow not just your high-end. daily fee courses to shine but the local municipal as well.  They all deserve a fair shot and they all deserve to shine.

Played today with one of my buddies, Andy, using GN, $55 at 12:10 p.m. It was kind of crowded around the first tee from about 11:30 to about 12:20, when we teed off. Maybe a lot of groups with approximately the same times, so we went out a little late. They paired another single with us at the last minute, right after we hit our tee shots. I would say it was a little disorganized around the first tee, but not a real big deal.

The course was cart path only due to a good amount of recent rains and wet turf made the course play a little longer. Most of the fairways were in great shape with only a couple of saturated areas and a good amount of turf to hit from. It’s dormant, mostly kikuyu and Bermuda grasses. Rough was cut nicely, just at about an inch and a half, with good coverage, so no issues there. Only a couple traps had standing water (12 and 13 green-side bunkers) and other than that, I would say the sand was in great shape. The greens were soft but fast enough that you had to be careful not to run putts way past. We saw the beverage cart about three times in four hours. Everybody from maintenance personnel to the pro shop and starter was very friendly and super considerate when you got over a shot.
At $55, it was a super good deal.

Tee it up GK’er Review Gurus abbacat, GDR2323 and Pedro7017 at what is becoming one of my favorite golf courses in Southern California. Ojai Valley Inn is a beautiful golf experience. The surrounds and resort grounds are scenic, secluded and tranquil. The place is deep in golf history and majestic with its large mature trees. There are so many gorgeous back drops on virtually every golf shot. The golf course itself is challenging yet fair. You really need to hit the ball straight out there off the tee and then a solid iron shot or deal with the hazards, tough bunkers or when the rough is long, difficult green-side shots.

Ojai Valley Inn is in great shape. Greens running moderately fast, mostly smooth and holding shots well. Fairways lush with some dry areas and cut tight. Rough lush with some dry areas but cut down (the rough is kikuyu so be glad its cut down). Tee boxes has some recent reseeding on some of them but in general no maintenance, level and mostly lush.

As far as service, excellent. Everyone. Bag drop, proshop, attendants assisting with parking lot pick up/drop off, on course beverage (this on a late Monday afternoon). They make you feel special.

They will be aerating the greens starting 10/24 so try to play the course in the near future. However its just small holes.

Looking forward to my next round here already!

I played in the GK Plays on Sunday, 11/13 with Ailan66, rudyclub and Joe. Great time! Conditions are nearly immaculate. I can’t think of any aspect of the course that needs work, except maybe a couple greens were slightly bumpy. It is incredibly lush everywhere. Greens are running medium fast and held full shots well. Two different greens were a little bumpy, but otherwise they ran smooth and pure. Fairways were basically perfect. Same for the rough: very lush with complete coverage. The bunkers I was in were great. Tee boxes excellent. All in all, 9+ conditions across the board.

This was my first time playing Snow Mountain and I enjoyed it slightly more than Wolf. The layout was a little more distinctive/memorable, although still not overly so. I did love the 18th hole, however. The stellar conditions and the isolated setting are the real highlights here.

Thank you Johnny and all the sponsors! I really like my new Linksoul hat! Copy and paste this url to access my Flickr photo album of 40 images: https://goo.gl/JhbUeQ

You can’t go wrong playing any of the Paiute courses. The driving ranges are immaculate, wide with a lot of targets. The course was in amazing shape. The tee boxes weren’t chewed up and there weren’t any divots to speak of in the fairways. The greens were very receptive and the ball stopped easily. The greens were a little on the slow/medium side. They said the greens were rolling at about an 11 but they seemed a little slower to me. Nonetheless, they rolled true and smoothly. The sand was nice although I was only in one green-side bunker. The two fairway bunkers I hit out of were in great shape.
The pace a play was steady, we only waited on the reachable par 4 10th and one par 3 near the end of the round. Also, there are water jugs every 3 holes or so which isn’t automatic on Vegas courses. I would definitely play the Sun course or any of the Paiute courses in a heartbeat.

Played here Tuesday, 8/16 to kick off “GK Review Gurus Visit Las Vegas Week.” I’d never played any of the Paiute courses, and seeing we have a GK Plays at Snow Mountain on tap for November, I wanted to play the other consensus favorite, Wolf. Waited out the GN Hot Deals until a day or two ahead, and got a good rate and was able to use 25% extra off GolfNow sent for my birthday. Planned to play by myself but after a 4-hour drive and checking in, the first guy I saw at the course was kg1791, which was pretty funny. We asked if we could play together and went straight out to the first tee. POP was whatever we wanted it to be, which turned out to be about 3:20. Ideal August weather with a nice breeze/sometimes gusty wind keeping the 100+ temps very tolerable.

As Kevin mentioned, conditions are excellent. You’d never guess it’s late summer in the desert with the lushness of the course. Obviously there are no water restrictions here. Greens were smooth and quick, medium-fast to fast. Putts really rolled out a long way. Full shots stopped fairly quickly and barely made any ball mark, which I couldn’t figure out why. If I had to guess, it seemed the greens were so mature and the grass so strong that the ball just didn’t penetrate the surface much, but they were still rather soft. Both fairways and rough were very lush, except for just a few rare spots here and there. Black tee (7009 yards) boxes were good, but some were so wet they were just this side of being casual water. On those, it almost felt like I was standing on a big sponge to tee off. Sand was good.

I enjoyed the layout but I’d heard so many great things about Paiute over the years, I sort of expected something more memorable. I thought lots of holes blended together somewhat. My favorite hole was the par-3 8th with a giant, deep bunker right of the elevated green.

I created a Flickr photo album with 56 photos that can be viewed by copying and pasting this URL: https://goo.gl/VrwqSs

Played 1-14-17 first out as a single walking in a little under three hours.
Tee boxes were in good shape, mostly lush and level with a few being a little thin and uneven mostly on par Threes. Fairways were in nice shape very lush with a few small bare areas. Rough was not as long as normal but still thick and tough to hit from. Didn’t go into any bunkers but most of them looked to be okay with some still holding some water from the rains. Greens were in great shape, the best that I have seen them in a while rolling smooth with medium/fast speed.
The course held up very well from all the rain. Definitely worth going out and playing.

2016 Best Playing Conditions for Santa Barbara County - La Purisima Golf Course
2016 Best Playing Conditions for Santa Barbara County – La Purisima Golf Course

Rode the Black tees today 10/3/2016 playing 36 holes with RGM2525 finishing both rounds in about 6 hours. Used the all you can play GK coupon which includes cart and range balls for $47.00–a spectacular deal for one of the toughest courses and beautiful layouts in California.

Morning round was in the low 60’s with a light breeze– we were greeted with a 20-25 mph swirling wind during our afternoon round. The staff here are very friendly. They have a cool elevated range, big chipping green and nice huge putting green that mirror’s the speed of the greens on the course. The greens were super pure putting wise and in very good shape. Little to no ballmarks, holding irons very nicely. I have seen them faster but overall I am rating the greens an 8/10. The fairways were mostly lush, green with a couple dried out brownish spots here and there that do not effect play. If you are in the fairway you have a nice lie. The tees were mostly lush and mostly level–only a couple of boxes were crowned. Seemed like they have redone the black tee box on #3. Overall rating for the tees were a 7.5/10. Was in 3 green-side bunkers over 36 holes and I loved the bunkers–very rarely am I 3/3 out of sand saves. Sand is thicker, raked and in good shape. Rated 8/10 Rough was thick 2-3 inches and lush in most places lining the fairways and greens.
I will say beware of being under trees in the rough or just in the rough at all. There are places were your ball might sink down in a hole in the rough–tough to hit a 295 yd drive down the middle of the fairway–hit a slope in the fairway–roll in the rough and then ride up to find your ball in a hole barely being able to advance it–lol–that’s what makes this course very tough. Rough rating 8/10.
Today we maybe saw 2-4 total groups on the golf course–it was like playing our own private golf course. I would HIGHLY recommend this golf course.

Golf in Indian Wells during the winter time is Fantastic.
It could not have been any better than at the Indian Wells Golf Resort – Players Course, where the Player’s Play. They overseeded the golf course in September so, it was in great shape.
On December 20, the fairways were in fantastic shape, the tee boxes were lush. The rough was fair, an extra 1 inch thick when compared to fairway. The greens were nice and rolled true. The golf guru’s could not have asked for better scoring conditions, as true Players.
I highly recommend that you check out the Indian Wells Golf Resort courses for your next golf outing. You just can’t go wrong.

Catching up on a review, had a great time Tuesday with fellow GK Review Gurus at Indian Wells Golf Resort. The Celebrity Course is one of my very favorite tracks. To me it’s like playing in a beautifully manicured desert garden. One of favorite aspects of both Indian Wells Golf Resort courses is the bunkers. Dramatic in natural, perfectly positioned, challenging to escape yet not unfair. Add to that the spectacular clubhouse, service and impressive on GPS…this is a complete high end golf experience.

As far as condition, excellent, and in few weeks, immaculate. Whenever you play a golf course coming out a rye grass overseeding the greens are going to be on the slow side yet likely exceptionally smooth. In addition fairways will be extremely green, hardly any divots yet still a tiny bit thin in spots until a few more cuts can be done. With every cut, and this goes for the greens too, the blades of rye grass get larger and hence denser the coverage. This results in faster greens and lusher fairways. Some courses do a good job overseeding, Indian Well Golf Resort does a fantastic job overseeding. That’s why the course is already lifted virtually all its cart path restrictions and in excellent condition early in the season.

Highly recommend play the Celebrity Course now and both Indian Wells Golf Resorts course this season. Can’t wait to play the Players Course on 12/12.

There are certain things in golf that are a given: Jordan Spieth will make a long putt, Augusta National will be in perfect condition for the Masters, and Titleist ProV1 will be the top played ball on tour.
So it is with Goose Creek, always a joy to play, always in great shape, wonderful staff, reasonably priced and managed the way all courses should be.
As expected the course was in great shape despite all the recent rains. Green and fairways being the best part. A few of the tee boxes had some issues, but nothing to severe. Bunkers appeared good, but I was lucky to have avoided them. Course seemed to handle the rains very well It’s just hard not to have a good time playing the Goose.

I played here on 1/16/17.
The course was in great shape as always. I feel that this course is great for all handicaps.
The pace of play was right @ 4 hours and we had a tee time @ 1130. The greens and fairways were excellent. I would say the only thing that was just OK were the tee boxes. Overall though the course is one of the best in the area and I always enjoy playing it for the conditions, scenery, the price and the service. I would say it’s the best course in the inland empire by far. I recommend it to all players.

As I had not played here for some time, thought based upon the most recent review I would give it another shot. Good decision! The course is in very nice condition, greens rolled true and just fast enough to present a challenge, but not too fast. Fairways have plenty of grass and the two bunkers I was in were both well manicured and had sufficient sand in them,.

Staff is always very good to deal and accommodating. Senior rate makes this course more affordable. Always a challenge and rarely leave here disappointed. Recommend this course to anyone looking for a fun but not too easy a round of golf.

Yep, another positive review for Black Gold.
I guess by now the only complaint I’d make about the place is that if you aren’t grooving on your swing, you may lose a lot of balls. It may get tiring for some, to have a good round spoiled because you lost your ball on a narrow fairway. Plus the layout may get tiresome as its always seems to be a narrow valley to hit through. There’s no trees to get in the way either. Great views though, you can see Catalina from several tee boxes. The course is real well kept. Very little GUR areas, or places where you wouldn’t want to hit your ball from.
I think it plays harder than the scorecard says, as this is the kinda of place where you can hit a nice shot, but only to realize you landed your ball 5 ft too far on the green and it rolls down into a gully or sand trap. If you play here with an experienced player, make sure they give you at least 4 extra strokes as experience here can be the difference between an 81 or a 91.
I think this place is the bear minimum to play in the LA area. I don’t venture too far east from here so I can’t comment about a couple Riverside courses I’ve heard about, but in my opinion, there’s only 5 courses worth playing: Black Gold, Industry Hills Ike and Babe, Oak Creek, and if you’re in the mood for slumming it, Skylinks. PM me if you want to send me somewhere else, but from I’ve observed, these are the only ones worth playing.

Played today, using the over 55 discount ($65, including cart). The course is in decent condition, with only one very saturated area just left of 17 green. As far as all the recent rains go, the course must drain rather well. The fairways and rough were mostly dormant Bermuda grass, cut low most everywhere. Great rollout on poorly hit tee shots, but tight lies as you approach most greens. Tees were mostly lush and level. Greens rolled fast and true with very subtle breaks. There was plenty of soft, white sand in the few bunkers I was in today. POP was about 4.5 hours, okay for a holiday of sorts (to paraphrase the previous reviewer). Go out and play, Monday and Tuesday are reduced rates for 55 years or older and nearby residents.

Played my free birthday round at Angeles National with a friend and two of his buddies, and really enjoyed the course immensely. It was my first time to ANGC and I simply loved the layout and the variety of long and short holes, along with the tremendous mountain scenery and really good conditions. The fairways are currently in that dormant yellow stage, but they play very nicely no matter the color. The rough is a deep, verdant green though, which makes the contrast very stunning indeed. The greens are super tough though – fast and so many tricky slopes and undulations – couldn’t catch up all day, but nothing but good things to say about their condition overall. I found the bunkers to be in fine shape – nice, fluffy sand greenside, and thinner traps to hit out of cleanly from the fairways. And the tee boxes were all in excellent shape. Loved the variety of tee boxes as well to choose from (we played the blue tees). There’s not a lot of elevation at ANGC to worry about, but there are plenty of difficult shots and carries that will eat your ball supply if wayward. The native areas are in play on pretty much every hole so you must be very clean and precise. The course is definitely fair though. Fair, but very tough. The very fast greens also make approach shots something of an adventure every single time. And some of your second shot carries will make those palms sweat! Free is a pretty great price to pay for this place – thanks for the hospitality. But I will definitely be rewarding ANGC with my actual hard-earned money in the near future – it’s very much worth it and I want a chance to redeem myself on those greens and shoot a better score. POP was great although I did feel bad for the threesome behind us as my crew, despite my hints to speed things up, were very deliberate on every shot and simply took too long to get moving. I’ll do better next time to be more vocal, but we were approached by a marshall starting the back 9 (actually the front 9 for us as we started on 10) and did pick up the pace thankfully. Not much more to add than that, but I really wonder what took me so long to get out here other than fear of a really high price and a course that would simply beat me up. Now that I know I can handle this track, the price worries me less. It’s worth it. Really nice place.
