Playing Conditions 9.18 IMMACULATE
Playing Conditions 9.18 IMMACULATE

Played 12-9-19 with Nick, Gary, and Pedro teeing off just after noon and finishing in a little over four hours.

Tee boxes were level and lush and in great condition. Fairways were very green and lush with great lies and decent roll out. Rough was very lush and thick, 3-4 inches and a club grabber. Bunkers had good quality sand in them and were well groomed. Greens were in great shape rolling true at medium/fast pace and semi-soft.

Very fun semi-challenging course with a great risk/reward finishing hole heading back into the clubhouse. Definitely one of the better conditioned courses in the valley right now.

Golf Playing Conditions 8.55 GREAT

Early morning 4.5 hour round on a well conditioned course. Staff is top notch as well as the facilities and carts.

The tee boxes were all very level with great coverage. The fairways were in excellent shape with fantastic coverage. The rough was a few inches in length and was frustrating to hit shots from (I hit many from it). The bunkers were the best I’ve had to play from that I can ever remember. The greens were a little dry and the holes were dried out pretty badly and not fair to the golfers. There was very few ball marks on them but somebody in front of our group was dragging their feet on every green.

The course is in great shape and I definitely recommend a round or two. Great day at Desert Willow.

Golf Course Conditions 8.38 GREAT
Golf Course Conditions 8.38 GREAT

Played 12/28/19 11AM on sunny mild winter day great weather. Earlier frost delay put us out a few minutes behind on the 10th tee 9’s usually reversed in frost conditions since the back 9 thaws first. Course plays better this way in my opinion. Pace of play was the bummer at 5:20 total for 18. Course conditions were near perfect with the exception of damp conditions due to winter rains. Cart path only and fairways offered a bit more roll than the week before. Arrived early enough to use all the practice areas. The chipping and sand trap area very similar to the course. The larger practice green near the 10th hole is more like what the course greens are like than the smaller warm-up green near the number one tee on top of a hill. The view from #1 tee is stunning. All greens rolling smooth and well kept.

The pace of play is not usually an issue here but with a frost delay it seems to back things up as our experience was similar to Guru rudyclub’s review from the day before. The quality of the course withstanding the slow play. 5+ hours is just too long for my liking.

Great weather, great course, great company, bluetooth speaker and the beverage cart made slow pace tolerable.
Always a recommend.

Golf Playing Conditions 7.61 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.61 GREAT

Reading Sal’s review and reflecting on my experience with Garth’s group it’s pretty humbling. Joined up with Garth for the round, previously played with him and the Gold Coast Golf Association in March, was really impressed with how friendly, organized and fun the outings are. Sandpiper is one of my favorite courses in SoCal so this was a no brainer. Didn’t expect Garth to make a special announcement about me joining them to play. Appreciated it but man, I’m just an avid golfer that loves this game.

The Review

As far as conditions, those greens were running around a 12, super smooth, holding shots and in tough locations. Even the hot dog putter was tormented at times. But they are fun. The rest of the golf course is exactly what I expected for this time of year. Firm with tight lies.

It’s a different course compared to April and December. In April (last time I played it) you have a more lush course, more eye pleasing and in overall better shape. In December following a dry summer and fall (remember SoCal didn’t get a bunch of rain until just 30 days ago) there are going to be thin spots and occasional bare spots up there. They are doing some small tine fairway aeration in trouble spots. But what you always get with Sandpiper is simply stunning ocean views and some spectacular golf holes. The ambiance of the place is one of my absolute favorites. It’s the main reason, IMO, to play the golf course.

Final Thoughts

I don’t think I have or will ever play an immaculate conditioned Sandpiper but it’s always in very good to great shape which is good enough for me given the amazing location. Always Recommended.

Golf Playing Conditions 9.65 IMMACULATE
Golf Playing Conditions 9.65 IMMACULATE

I had a couple of minor issues with the GK App at Spanish Bay and Johnny told me there is a new update. So I used that as an excuse to go play today so I could test out the app some more. I chose Quail Lodge because they do a ton of awareness and fundraisers during October for Breast Cancer Awareness month. As a side note they are doing a $50 special on Friday with half the money going to a local Cancer foundation. As of this morning there were only a couple of spots open on the tee sheet. At a third of the price, I’m surprised there were any still left.

Quail is always known for its excellent staff friendliness, great course conditions and they are also dog friendly. I arrived early, dropped off my bag with the attendant/starter and hit the all grass range (balls included) The range does have a 200 yard max so no driver or 3 wood.

Thanks to a nice tip to the attendant, he got me out about 30 minutes early. I made my way through a couple groups zipping through the front nine in an hour. The back nine was a completely different story, but I still finished in 3 hours.

The Review

The greens were a perfect 10. Extremely smooth, pitch mark free and gorgeous dark green in color. Greens were rolling very fast. Definitely the fastest I’ve seen them here.

They are in the middle of verti-cutting some of the fairways. Fairways are always top notch at Quail Lodge and once all of the maintenance work is done on them, I’m sure they will all be at a 9-10 rating.

No issues with the tee boxes. Divots had been smoothly filled in to keep the box level. All tee boxes had plenty of lush grass to hit off of.

Sand traps were absolutely spectacular. A definite 9.5 rating. I was in 5-6 green-side bunkers and all were top notch.

Final Thoughts

Even though 16 of the holes at Quail are completely flat, it doesn’t feel that way. Maybe it’s the mountains that boarder up against both sides of the course or just the great routing of the holes. The track is anything but boring. A definite must play and the hotel is an excellent place to stay at as well.

Golf Playing Conditions 8.57 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 8.57 GREAT

Played last Saturday. My first time playing here, and wow! The place is great! I loved everything about it! Now I was lucky enough to have an inside hookup that got me out for $125, I’m not sure how I’d feel if I paid the regular rate, but when I was thinking about it later, I felt that this may be in the top 3 courses I’ve played in the LA/Desert area.

Pelican was better than the Riviera, primarily in layout, they compared with course conditions. LACC was better in both layout and conditions. Yeah, I’d say Pelican may be the 2nd best place to play in LA/Desert area. The south course is lower and cuts closer to the beach. One hold has you right up over the shoreline in fact. The layout was quite varied I thought, with a meandering path throughout the resort, with few holes lined up together. The service was outstanding, I even had my car washed. I ate lunch too, that was also great, and a bunch of my friends loved the pool. I’d love to play golf here again, if I can get a deal, or feel like splurging.

Golf Playing Conditions 7.93 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.93 GREAT

Played mid-morning here today.  It’s the second time I’ve played Journey.  I really like the layout of this course.  There’s plenty of elevated tee shots with gorgeous views everywhere. Scenic creeks run through holes and there is plenty of water.

Definitely target golf.  So if your game is not on, expect to lose a few balls. customer service is generally good here which is expected, from the bag drop to the starter. Range balls and a chipping area is included with your round.

As mentioned in the previous review, tee boxes are a bit shaggy but you could always find a place to play from. Fairways are lush and in good shape, not dry don’t expect too much roll. Rough is that thick, nice stuff, enough to grab your club or make you duff your chip. Bunkers were thick full of nice, white sand.  Unfortunately I was in 3 or 4 of them.  Greens were running quick with a lot of crazy undulation on these, 10 and 18 come to mind.

Leave yourself underneath the hole. Expect a workout and a challenge.  This isn’t your typical resort course, but I always enjoy when i can get out here.

The course is in great shape and I definitely recommend a round or two. Great day at Desert Willow.
