Had a playing lesson this morning 2/19/2019. Cooler morning with beautiful skies. Crowded course this morning for a Tuesday morning. I am impressed with the new management. Since I have played here last they continue to make improvements to areas just in front of tees, around trees, etc.

The Review

Golf Playing Conditions 7.67 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.67 GREAT

The greens were in great shape. They look quicker than they putted. They putted very smoothly. Would say maybe a 10 on the stimp. Very few ball-marks but some foot traffic around some of the holes. Gil Hanse architect of this beauty created huge putting surfaces here with some undulation. Staff can put the pins in 6-7 different locations to challenge lag putting here. Greens held shots like darts and were in very good shape. Highlight of the course. Rated 8/10.

All bunker complexes have newer white sand put in within the last year. My student was in bunkers on 12 and 16 and I was in the bunker on 17–they are all in great shape. Soft sand that you need to thump. Rated 8/10.

The fairway grass is slowly coming back into shape. I saw more green grass. There is still some underlying mud and wet spots from the recent rains. In the coming weeks I can see the grass really growing in and getting better. Current fairway rating 6/10.

Tees for the most part were OK. They should look at leveling the par 5 5th hole tee box.

Rough was muddy and spotty but in not too bad of shape. Mowers were out cutting the grass this morning.

My student and I really enjoyed the day here. Great staff, great prices, nice greens and sand conditions. Fairway conditions will be improving each day with all the rains we received.

Recommended.

Walked the Oak Tees this morning 11/12/2018 teeing off at 10am joined by a very nice couple. Our POP was 4 hrs 50 minutes on a holiday which wasn’t too bad. Weather was perfect around 70-75 degrees with hardly any wind. Fantastic staff here, great prices(paid $25.00) to walk and a very fun layout created by the Olympic Course architect Gil Hanse. Always a very peaceful vibe up here in Ojai with beautiful mountain backdrops.

The greens were very quick and in great shape. They were supposed to receive maintenance last week but they did not and other than 1/2 of number 1 green on the right side being punched all the greens were fast, smooth and holding irons beautifully. Staff should be commended. Fairways are still nice and full and lush, mostly all green, no problem areas and for this late in the golf season that’s awesome. The tees were mostly all lush, some need leveling, but for the most part great shape. The rough was in decent shape, some lush parts and some semi-lush spots. I was in 2 green-side bunkers and they had super soft beach sand that you really need to thump the ball to get out. All bunkers looked well maintained and raked.

Parting Thought

You can really tell that the new management is really putting a lot of effort into the course. On number 12 just right of the green under the trees they have re-sodded a big area that used to be dirt, looks fantastic. Would highly recommend Soule Park.

Playing Conditions 8.03 GREAT

Walked the Oak Tees this morning 10/8/2018 with a 7:12am tee time with my buddy RGM2525. What a great and fun round! Weather was nice at tee off low 50’s with no wind today and warming up on the back nine. We paid $28.00 walking and our POP was 3 hours 35 minutes following a nice three-some.

This is the nicest I have seen Soule Park ever. I have not played here since February and am just so impressed. They have new ownership and if you have not checked this place out you should. Right now its wall to wall green and lush with new sand in all the bunkers.

The greens are firm and mostly putting quick and smooth with just a few old ball marks present that really did not effect putting. Would say rolling close to a 10 on the stimp and in great shape. I believe they can have up to 7 different hole locations on these huge undulating Gil Hanse surfaces.

The fairways were so lush they were Palm Springs quality. Thick, lush and green with great lies.

The tees were super lush, green and mostly all level.

The only bunker I was in was fairway bunker on 9 that had perfect raked sand. All bunkers contain new sand.

Rough was mostly all lush, very few dry spots. They were mowing some of the rough down.

I heard they just had a senior qualifier tournament up here and I can see why.

Highly recommended in great shape! Wish I lived a tad closer. I will return for sure.

Golf Playing Conditions 6.98 GOOD
Golf Playing Conditions 6.98 GOOD

Walked the Orange Tees this morning 2/20/2018 at 8:40am with RGM2525, his dad Gordon and also joined by a nice single Dan from Colorado–what a enjoyable day! We had colder but beautiful weather in the high 40’s when we teed off warming up some on the back nine with maybe a club of wind on the back nine–very nice playing conditions . POP was 4 hours never really waiting that long and not really being pushed by the 3some of walkers behind us. Paid $28.00 to walk which is their standard morning rate.

The greens were rolling fairly smooth and nice with medium pace. Maybe a 9 to 9.5 on the stimp with just a few ballmarks present. I thought they were in good shape and were holding irons with spin and higher trajectory. The pin locations here on these big Gil Hanse greens make putting and chipping fun and challenging. Rated 7.5/10

The fairways for hardly any rain in the area were semi-lush providing decent lies and decent run out. Rated 7/10

The tees were mostly lush and some needed leveling. In better than average shape. Rated 7/10

The rough is dry, thin in most places with some bare spots and hardpan here and there. Rated 6/10.

Was in fairway bunker on #9 that contained just the right amount of sand for bunker shots.

FYI –this might be a permanent thing so check with the pro-shop they are now starting players on #17, then playing #18 then on to #10-16 and then #1-9 to finish up. So my tips on this site will have to be updated–Johnny might want to update the scorecard too after speaking with the pro-shop to see if this is going to be a permanent change as they had scorecards made for players with this new routing system.

Out this afternoon 12/4/2018 walking the orange tees joined by my buddy Mack and his buddy Brian and a nice single. We teed off at 11:50am 10 minutes early and finished at 4:20pm for a POP of 4 hrs 30 minutes–we played the front in 2 hrs and then had a 3 group back-up on #10 tee. Weather was beautiful maybe 1 club wind and around 70 degrees at tee off. Paid the walking twilight rate of $19.00 which considering how nice and lush the course is might be one of the best deals in Ventura County.

Golf Playing Conditions 7.29 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.29 GREAT

Soule Park should be commended on current conditions–very lush and green fairways with very little problem areas. Rated 8/10.

Greens looking and rolling beautiful. Very little to no ball marks, holding very softly on approaches and actually rolling medium to fast. In great shape. Rated 8/10.

Tees mostly level and lush–rated 7.5/10

Was not in any bunkers but they looked to be raked and in good shape.

Rough generally lush and green and in good shape. Rated 8/10.

I just love this course–especially for the rates they charge. New management is really keeping it up nicely for the start of December. Recommended.
