Playing Conditions 6.90 GOOD
Playing Conditions 6.90 GOOD

Played on Friday, 9/7, with John_T. We were looking for a round while most courses are closed for re-seeding and found plenty open times at Sunrise.

Conditions were excellent tee to green. Relatively flat and damage free tee boxes. Rough was varied from about 1 inch to over 3 in some areas. Bunkers had some of the best sand in the valley and easy to hit out. Fairways were lush, with some wet, soggy areas. The greens! Oh my gawd, the greens. Simply phenomenal. Absolutely no sign of aerating 2 weeks ago. Smooth as glass, very little amount of ball marks, and running medium speed but sped up as the day warmed. Just incredible conditions for the end of summer in Vegas.

Only complaint: they started us on 10, behind a Men’s group scramble when the front 9 looked empty. We caught them in a few holes and slowed to a 2:15ish time. Men’s group only played 9 and we played the front in a casual 1:30.

Here’s the incredible part: we paid $29 local rate, which included $10 credit in the Winterwood Grille. I only wish it wasn’t such a difficult drive for me from the far Northwest. Sunrise is being added to the rotation.

Golf Playing Conditions 7.63 GREAT

Conditions remain steady at Ridge Creek. Fairways are starting to show some weathering from the summer heat in that they are 50/50 green/brown. However, even the brown areas still offer a great platform to hit from. Greens were rolling medium/fast with a bit more pitch marks than the last time but not nearly as many as from a few months ago.

Tee boxes are a solid 8, nice level and lush with very few divots. Rough is always nasty at Ridge Creek. Anything outside the first cut is game over. Same goes for the long grass around the lips of the bunkers. I lost two balls in bunkers today.

POP was ok. Given it was a weekend, I suppose it wasn’t too bad. Ridge Creek is all about keeping it in the fairway and out of the bunkers. Do that and you can set a PR. Start going wide even to the point of hitting the fairway and rolling into rough and your score balloons like crazy.

Customer service is great and I always enjoy when I have the time to eat at the restaurant afterwards.

Played La Purisima 9/11/18 second off on a foggy morning. The first four holes were virtually blind due to the fog, which really adds to the abundant challenge!

Course was in excellent condition overall. Greens rolled well, though not especially fast. Fairways were well covered, rough was lush and relatively thick, but not especially long. Tees were generally well covered but several lacked areas where they were very level.

As the second group off, POP was not an issue and the fog eventually lifted and gave way to a beautiful day. This is a gorgeous course but a difficult one.

Walked the Oak Tees this morning 11/12/2018 teeing off at 10am joined by a very nice couple. Our POP was 4 hrs 50 minutes on a holiday which wasn’t too bad. Weather was perfect around 70-75 degrees with hardly any wind. Fantastic staff here, great prices(paid $25.00) to walk and a very fun layout created by the Olympic Course architect Gil Hanse. Always a very peaceful vibe up here in Ojai with beautiful mountain backdrops.

The Review

Golf Playing Conditions 8.23 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 8.23 GREAT

The greens were very quick and in great shape. They were supposed to receive maintenance last week but they did not and other than 1/2 of number 1 green on the right side being punched all the greens were fast, smooth and holding irons beautifully. Staff should be commended. Fairways are still nice and full and lush, mostly all green, no problem areas and for this late in the golf season that’s awesome. The tees were mostly all lush, some need leveling, but for the most part great shape. The rough was in decent shape, some lush parts and some semi-lush spots. I was in 2 green-side bunkers and they had super soft beach sand that you really need to thump the ball to get out. All bunkers looked well maintained and raked.

Parting Thought

You can really tell that the new management is really putting a lot of effort into the course. On number 12 just right of the green under the trees they have re-sodded a big area that used to be dirt, looks fantastic. Would highly recommend Soule Park.

Looked forward to playing my final round of 2018 at one of my favorite public courses. I have always enjoyed the rural feeling, the mountains in the background, and the rolling contours of the fairways.

Our foursome had the third time off at 6:45am. Not nearly as cold as expected or predicted. In fact it was quite pleasant, considering it is December 31st. Very nice pace of play, about 3 hours 40 minutes for our walking foursome. Never waited, never had anyone behind us, so played at a nice relaxed pace.

However the course is NOT in condition right now. The fairways were very thin, borderline mud in some areas. Numerous areas in the rough exhibited the same conditions and frequently around the greens, there were areas of just dirt – no grass what so ever. Pitching to these crowned greens off super thin/tight lies makes for one very difficult task. This combined with the fact that the greens were very firm (Due to the cold weather?) made for some tough short game challenge. Despite the firmness of the greens, there putted very slow? Found two bunkers and both had well maintained sand.

I’m hopeful that the warm spring/summer will return Santa Anita to better conditions. However the cost ($16.50) is such bargain, it’s difficult to be too disappointed with any kind of golf on New Years Eve. Happy New Year !!!

Golf Playing Conditions 7.35 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.35 GREAT

Played today 12/20. It’s been many months since we last played here due to the high green fees. However this is one of our favorite courses and thanks to management for offering specials, which allows us to economically play this course several times a year.

The course in very nice condition from the greens to the bunkers. Greens were smooth and rolled medium to fast. Bunkers had nice fluffy sand, a little wet but easy to hit out off. Today the pins were placed in difficult sections of the greens and shot placement was a must or you rolled off the greens. Challenging but always fun. This course can get punishing if you tend to slice or pull your shots, bets to hit then straight.

Round started out slow as we followed a slow foursome, but it appears that the course marshal moved them along as we noticed their pace of play improved.

Black Gold has one of the best staff around. great customer service and personable. Always enjoy playing this course when we can.

It’s not like it’s a hidden gem as it’s so often reviewed on Gk, but dang it’s hard to get over how good Goose Creek is. Was a little bit pricey at $92 for a Sat morning round on a windy day but course conditioning is as good as it gets for a public course in the Inland Empire. Make that anywhere.

Nice green fairways, well tended bunkers with soft sand and smooth greens all throughout. I always enjoy the ample fairways and subtle difficulty of this course, especially on and around the greens. Attentive Marshall ensured good pace of play (<4 hrs) and we saw the beverage cart several times during our round. Had nice cup of chili after the round.

The consistency at which Goose Creek delivers a good product every time we play there is something I wish would be replicated at other area courses. Hats off!

Golf Playing Conditions 9.00 IMMACULATE
Golf Playing Conditions 9.00 IMMACULATE

Played on 12/26. This was my first time playing Eagle Falls after years of wanting to get out here. With all the great reviews I have read and the 9.03 rating, the course had a lot to live up to and it did.

Check in was fast and easy. Not much here as far as club house or snack bar or bar, but it’s not why I wanted to come here anyways. They paired us with a very nice couple from Canada and we teed off right on our 11:16 tee time. POP 4 hrs 15 min. We did not use the range, but it looked very nice.

The Review

Tee boxes – In very nice lush shape. All were level and had normal divot damage.

Fairways – Wow, were they ever perfect. No brown could be found. Ball always sat up nice. Fairways undulate, but not to severely. Some of the best I have ever played on.

Rough – Long, thick and sticky (Golf version of a Montrose song). The rough was always on hills and if you though you might get a lucky bounce out of it, forget it, not happening. The rough was dark green everywhere and would grab your club and ball. Framed the fairways nicely.

Bunkers – Was only in one and had nice sand, could use a little bit more, but i am not complaining. Saw one green side bunker with lots of new sand just waiting for a crew to spread it out. The bunkers are deep and

Greens – A little slow for my taste, but in great shape. they were medium speed but downhill putts and chips could get away from you. If you only read your putts from behind the ball, you will have trouble here. You need to look at them from a side angle also or it’s going to be a long 3 putt day.

Final Thoughts

Overall I loved the course and can’t wait to get back out, maybe for a springtime round. If the wind kicks up it is going to be a very tough course. There are some forced carries, like 150 yards over water, but with the breeze we had in our face that day it made the drive a little more nerve racking.
