Found myself in Santa Barbara late afternoon yesterday, 10/8, so decided to swing by Sandpiper Golf Club for a late Twilight round. Beautiful weather, clear day, played as a single. Teed it up at 3:45pm. Hardly anyone out there that late. It was a surreal experience. Fabulous views. Peaceful sounds. I can’t recommend a late Twilight round at Sandpiper enough.

The Review

Golf Playing Conditions 7.42 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.42 GREAT

Golf Course conditions are very good despite very dry Summer/Fall weather the region has had. Greens in super shape despite some tiny hole venting aeration (no sand). The tiny holes did not affect the putts whatsoever. Fast, holding approach shots, running out on pitch shots and smooth. Fairways in very good shape. Firm with a good padding to the hit the ball from. Light green with occasional light brown areas. Primary rough is cut low just above fairway height. There in no longer tall secondary fescue rough, likely to conserve water so they can focus resources on the fairways, so if want to cut the corner a little bit on hole 15 go for it. Bunkers in good shape, firm but decent sand. Light brown coloring in most traps. Tee boxes in good shape. Lush, groomed with some tee boxes (played the gold tees) needing to be more level.

Finished in 3 hours. I only had to skip one hole to play through a foursome. I also had to stop playing to take a couple phone calls which resulted in 20 minute delay. Add to that I took a ton of photos which I will post some on GK this week.

My Perspecitive

Some might feel like for a golf course that expansive, and actually if you are a tri-county resident (live in Ventura, Santa Barbara or San Louis Obispo County) it’s a significant price break, that conditions should always be fantastic. I disagree. The high green fee is 100% justified by the experience of playing a very fun layout with some of the most beautiful golf course ocean views anywhere I’ve played. In addition the peaceful unique ambiance of the place is special. The stretch of holes 10 – 14 on the cliffs of the ocean is simply spectacular. Holes 5 & 6 on the front nine are also excellent ocean golf holes. You can see the ocean from almost everywhere on the golf course if you look in its direction. Just a handful of holes that are mediocre in my opinion such as 8, 9 and 15. Some might not like that 18 is par 3 but its an fantastic par 3 IMO with one the toughest greens on the golf course. I love this golf course. It’s one of my very favorites. I highly recommend it.

Golf Playing Conditions 8.08 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 8.08 GREAT

Took the hour drive to Ojai.

Today’s conditions definitely made up for yesterday at Knollwood. Today was absolutely perfect. Yesterday we almost died from hypothermia, today high 60’s with no wind.  Pace of Play (POP) a little over 4 hours only because we caught the foursome of millennials that started 4 holes ahead of us. On a side note, if you are a beginner the blue tees aren’t for you and there are others on the planet, not just you.

Back to the review, course was fantastic. Staff is top notch, best I’ve had in awhile. Course was in great shape, tee boxes level, fairways lush, sand great and greens were perfect. I would highly recommend this course and I will definitely be back. The Ventura, Santa Barbara area is really underrated as far as golf is concerned. It really is worth a golf trip if you aren’t local. Rustic Canyon, Moorpark CC, Olivas Links, Glenn Annie and Ojai are spectacular courses that won’t break the bank.

Looked forward to playing my final round of 2018 at one of my favorite public courses. I have always enjoyed the rural feeling, the mountains in the background, and the rolling contours of the fairways.

Our foursome had the third time off at 6:45am. Not nearly as cold as expected or predicted. In fact it was quite pleasant, considering it is December 31st. Very nice pace of play, about 3 hours 40 minutes for our walking foursome. Never waited, never had anyone behind us, so played at a nice relaxed pace.

However the course is NOT in condition right now. The fairways were very thin, borderline mud in some areas. Numerous areas in the rough exhibited the same conditions and frequently around the greens, there were areas of just dirt – no grass what so ever. Pitching to these crowned greens off super thin/tight lies makes for one very difficult task. This combined with the fact that the greens were very firm (Due to the cold weather?) made for some tough short game challenge. Despite the firmness of the greens, there putted very slow? Found two bunkers and both had well maintained sand.

I’m hopeful that the warm spring/summer will return Santa Anita to better conditions. However the cost ($16.50) is such bargain, it’s difficult to be too disappointed with any kind of golf on New Years Eve. Happy New Year !!!

Golf Playing Conditions 8.42 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 8.42 GREAT

Played 12-15-18 early morning as a twosome and finished in a little under 3 hours.

Tee boxes were very nice, good coverage, cut tight, and mostly level. Fairways were very nice and lush with great lies but not much roll out. Rough was in real good shape, not to long but thick and the ball would sit down at times. Was in three green-side bunkers all of which were a little thin and firm. Greens were in great shape, smooth fast and receptive to well struck shots.

Overall course is in great shape. Costumer service was great from arrival to departure. Fun, challenging, scenic course that for me gets a little repetitive on some of the holes.

Golf Playing Conditions 7.35 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.35 GREAT

Played today 12/20. It’s been many months since we last played here due to the high green fees. However this is one of our favorite courses and thanks to management for offering specials, which allows us to economically play this course several times a year.

The course in very nice condition from the greens to the bunkers. Greens were smooth and rolled medium to fast. Bunkers had nice fluffy sand, a little wet but easy to hit out off. Today the pins were placed in difficult sections of the greens and shot placement was a must or you rolled off the greens. Challenging but always fun. This course can get punishing if you tend to slice or pull your shots, bets to hit then straight.

Round started out slow as we followed a slow foursome, but it appears that the course marshal moved them along as we noticed their pace of play improved.

Black Gold has one of the best staff around. great customer service and personable. Always enjoy playing this course when we can.

Golf Playing Conditions 8.32 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 8.32 GREAT

Got to take some work colleagues out for a nice round of golf and, since I had never played Monarch Beach, thought it would be a great option. I was not wrong.

Before we get to the price:value portion of the review, let’s talk about some of the great things that were on offer here. First of all, the property around the course is pretty spectacular. Yes, there’s the ocean hole that everyone sees rather exclusively, but there are some really beautiful other sections of the course, including the view looking up the hill on number 11, or any of the other pretty lakes and landscapes. I found the course to be so much more than the signature hole, but that was pretty awesome too (and felt good to par it).

I found the front nine layout to be somewhat more, for lack of a better word, gimmicky, than the back nine, which I ultimately preferred (despite the ocean hole). There were still some fun holes for sure, but I just preferred the back for some reason. Lots of elevations, plenty of water and OB danger. I lost a lot of balls today. You just can’t be wayward or the punishment will present itself.

The Review

Course conditions were very good overall with some slight nitpicking required. Greens were running about 11.5 according to the staff. I somehow did very well with them with only 27 putts all day so for me they seemed to hold shots great, follow their lines obediently and remain consistent in terms of speed and conditioning on all 18. That was great.

Fairways were mostly in great shape but there were a few thin or Ground Under Repair (GUR) areas to be found, most likely from recent rains perhaps, or could be over watering. But a thin or dirt area was definitely on the cards if you missed fairways with any venom, so that’s a bit of a knock. I also found the bunkers to be mostly all in great, fluffy shape, but one or two seemed to be just a level before the non-sand elements of the traps so you could see some cloth or something peeking out from the ground. Rough was perfect in some areas and deadly in others … varied by hole. And the tee boxes (we played the orange tees) were all perfect.

Pretty slow group in front of us made slower by the challenging layout and easy opportunity to lose balls. Still, we finished in around 4.5 hours I think so no complaining there. No cart service but we did have one of the staff drive by and give us apples and water. The same offerings were available at the 10th tee.

Final Thoughts

All this being said, this is a very cool, very high-end course. But it’s well over $200 and that I feel is, despite all of the amazing things this course has to offer, slightly over the line. This is easily a $150 course with no hesitation. With some course knowledge now, I would absolutely love to come back here soon and get back some of those lost shots, but I’ll certainly be looking for the teeoff.com deal to be available. However, if you have the means, go play this course and just have some fun. But don’t be fooled by the advertisements that only highlight the ocean hole because the rest of this course combined is much more memorable than that one, albeit great hole.

Golf Playing Conditions 7.36 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 7.36 GREAT

It’s not like it’s a hidden gem as it’s so often reviewed on Gk, but dang it’s hard to get over how good Goose Creek is. Was a little bit pricey at $92 for a Sat morning round on a windy day but course conditioning is as good as it gets for a public course in the Inland Empire. Make that anywhere.

Nice green fairways, well tended bunkers with soft sand and smooth greens all throughout. I always enjoy the ample fairways and subtle difficulty of this course, especially on and around the greens. Attentive Marshall ensured good pace of play (<4 hrs) and we saw the beverage cart several times during our round. Had nice cup of chili after the round.

The consistency at which Goose Creek delivers a good product every time we play there is something I wish would be replicated at other area courses. Hats off!

Golf Playing Conditions 8.32 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 8.32 GREAT

Decided to head out to Pechanga for a little golf and gambling. We bought the Underpar deal which includes 2 people for $200 and a bounce back certificate. I kinda knew in the back of my head that there would be a frost delay due to the very cold overnight temperatures. Right when we walked in at 7:30 there was a sign stating that there was indeed a frost delay. The clubhouse staff let us know that we had about an hour or so before they could open the range. We decided to eat at the restaurant and the breakfast was spectacular. About thirty minutes after arriving the staff came around and let everyone know that they were going to start teeing off in 10 minuets. The only issue we had was instead of a shotgun they just teed off in order so we still ended up teeing off 1 hour after our tee time.

The Review

Course is in fantastic shape right with the exception of some Ground Under Repair (GUR) on 2,7,16,18 which are Cart Path Only (CPO) they looked to have suffered some storm damage and they had laid new Sod down already. Other than those minor issues all fairways were near perfect with consistent roll and fluffy lies. The Rough was very nasty which makes for 3 rounds in a row where balls were easily lost in the 3-5 inch rough, I will have nightmares about this for weeks. Greens were running about a 12 on the scale and were mostly firm. The par three’s seemed to be little softer than others which was a good thing. Tee’s need to be moved but they all were well spaced and provided a level hitting surface. I did notice that each hole had 2-3 Super Lush tee boxes that maybe they are using for a tournament. These boxes were twice as nice as what they were using so it was a little confusing. I was not in any sand but per my playing partners it was fantastic.

Overall this place is a lot of fun and usually has fantastic conditions. Staff is super friendly even with the craziness of a frost delay and 5hr Pace of Play (POP.) I will gladly come back anytime. Even if you pay rack rate I think its still worth it.
