Best Playing Conditions Award 2019 by GreensKeeper.org
Best Playing Conditions Award 2019 by GreensKeeper.org

This year GreensKeeper.org awards Cascata Best Playing Conditions 2019 for the Southern Nevada.

Not to be confused with “Worth the Green Fee,” “Best Playing Conditions” is awarded to golf courses open to the public listed on Greenskeeper.org that stand out above the rest with our site users at providing consistently the best greens, fairways, rough, tee boxes and bunkers around.

The job of the superintendent is the life blood of the golf course and most important contributing factor to enjoying a golf experience.  A golf course is a living, breathing organism whose health is constantly in flux.  It takes enormous dedication, resources and expertise by a superintendent and their staff to provide excellent turf conditions.

The rating system used on Greenskeeper.org is in part created by superintendents.  GreensKeeper.org’s trademark and creed, “Know Before You Go”®, centers on communicating these current playing conditions.

How Awards Winners Are Determined

Golf Course reviews and ratings submitted by our 78,000+ Greenskeeper.org community are tabulated over 12 months. Winners are determined for each area.

We divide awards into 11 sections —  Inland Empire, Los Angeles County, Orange County, Palm Springs Area, San Diego County, Santa Barbara County, Ventura County, Southern California, Central California, Northern California and Southern Nevada.

Golf Course Conditions 8.38 GREAT
Golf Course Conditions 8.38 GREAT

Played 12/28/19 11AM on sunny mild winter day great weather. Earlier frost delay put us out a few minutes behind on the 10th tee 9’s usually reversed in frost conditions since the back 9 thaws first. Course plays better this way in my opinion. Pace of play was the bummer at 5:20 total for 18. Course conditions were near perfect with the exception of damp conditions due to winter rains. Cart path only and fairways offered a bit more roll than the week before. Arrived early enough to use all the practice areas. The chipping and sand trap area very similar to the course. The larger practice green near the 10th hole is more like what the course greens are like than the smaller warm-up green near the number one tee on top of a hill. The view from #1 tee is stunning. All greens rolling smooth and well kept.

The pace of play is not usually an issue here but with a frost delay it seems to back things up as our experience was similar to Guru rudyclub’s review from the day before. The quality of the course withstanding the slow play. 5+ hours is just too long for my liking.

Great weather, great course, great company, bluetooth speaker and the beverage cart made slow pace tolerable.
Always a recommend.

Alex326 review of the course this day hit all the highlights as we played a GK individual match 7/16/19

I can offer these details. The greens rolled about perfect had just the lightest dressing of fertilizer or sand and were maybe a touch longer therefore a tad slower. Considering the summer heat now and until September they should remain in tip top condition kept this way.

We teed off on the 10th instead of 1st. The starter asked us to use the shoe cleaner before we stepped up to the tee box to remove any possible seeds or debris stuck to our shoes from other courses. Yes Yocha is this nice. Hardly a weed to be found anywhere inside the cart paths. The rough was sticky as an errant strike held quickly in the plush 3″ stuff. Hit it in the vineyard once (free drop) and the water hazard twice (penalty’s) The fairways are pretty generous so most holes you can give it a go.

Nice touch at the end are the rolled & cooled face cloths they serve you with tongs off of a silver tray to wipe your face. In the winter it’s a warm towel. Troon pays attention to detail!

First time here this year and want to be back soon. Always in good shape it is a notch above that right now.

Golf Playing Conditions 8.37 GREAT

Lead off group 12/15 under cloudy skies with a threat of showers that didn’t fall. POP not an issue we were told to not go too fast to avoid maintenance crews but didn’t see them. They were blowing leaves on a couple holes but that only helped conditions and the operators gave plenty of room to play through.

Third round in a row here and it’s a bit over an hour drive for us. It’s great conditions at value pricing for the season. With the excellent service the Troon facility is a 4/5 star golf anytime of year. Every time this year it’s consistently been good to great in every rating area.

Golf Playing Conditions 8.39 GREAT
Golf Playing Conditions 8.39 GREAT

Played here 10/2 with GK member molebio (Nat) as our first stop on a quick Nor Cal visit. I had read plenty about Yocha on Keith’s blog and various other sites but I was still blown away. The moment you know it’s a Troon property, you expect something nice and just like Classic Club or Maderas, I was not disappointed. This place just screams class and the course was spectacular. I won’t gush too much now, however it quickly became a personal favorite. A note on the review…It rained a fair amount before our tee time and we got quick a soaking from a cell overhead that eventually passed, so fair thee warned that this was taken into consideration.

The Review

Tee boxes: Good shape overall. A really great mix of tee options for skill levels of all types. A fair amount of turf to place the tees and although the rain made the ground soft, it was very playable.

Fairways: Wonderful condition. If they drain and play this well in pouring rain, I can only imagine how amazing they must be in high season. Cut perfectly and the cut patterns were visually stunning. Consistency of the grass was also excellent. Can’t fault the course for rain, but you can praise their staff for doing a great job of avoiding standing water and performing preventative maintenance to make sure the course was playable in that kind of weather.

Rough: No joke, this grass was Torrey tough. It was thick and sticky, with the height enough to hide a white golf ball easily and quickly. It was penal and brutal.

Sand: Unfortunately you can prepare everything else on the course to drain a bit except for the bunkers, so the rain made the sand into oatmeal and shot shaping was nearly impossible. I get the feeling these bunkers are normally pearly white sand that’s the perfect consistency.

Greens: Excellent condition. Again, given the rain, they ran very quick and even on roll. They were a beautiful green color and the undulation was challenging.

Parting Thoughts

ETC: Everything about this property was amazing. The staff is what you would expect from Troon; attentive, courteous, and friendly. From bag drop to club cleanup, the staff at Yocha we’re the cherry on a delicious sundae. The carts were great with good GPS. Water in coolers as well as fridges everywhere on the course. What more can be said about the layout; one of my favorites. Highly recommend anyone who can make the trip and play here, you will not be disappointed.

Golf Playing Conditions 8.92 GREAT

Played 2/16/2018 12:30pm a sunny but blustery gusty wind day most of the round (20mph +) First tee being 100+ft above the fairway the winds was most notable there. Course is well manicured and the wow factor is there from check-in to the 19th hole. A casino (Cache Creek) resort course in great condition I can really no faults here. Better than what I expected this time of year. Green fees are $95 and worth it if you like great conditions. The attention to detail is evident and I’d say one of the best in the area for public play.

Not much roll but great. greens receptive, ran medium fast to fast and true. Was in a lot of traps and they were all great. If you are anywhere near here you have to play this course!

They now have a phone app that has a overhead view& yardage. The carts have GPS and seem to be accurate. The app has a nice feature to see the layout for first time players. The golf carts also have USB charging ports.

This is a spectacular golf track. It may seem like a bit of a drive from the bay area at first but you will see its not that far (just about 30 miles north of Highway 80 near Davis) and it is well worth it.
It is one of the most visually beautiful and best maintained courses in all of Northern California. I’ve had the good fortune to play the most iconic venues in the area including Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill, Pasatiempo, and others. And I can say this course stands up to all of those in terms of the layout, the conditions and the enjoyability of playing it. And the staff and hospitality are tremendous.
This course is flat out one of my favorites and all of Northern California and I highly recommend it.

Why Did We Expand the Regions?

It’s simple.  Greenskeeper.org has been growing.  We expanded the number of regions because golfers like you have reported about golf course conditions of the golf courses you play.  In short golfers come to us if they want informative, relevant golf course reviews and it’s all due to your, our GK Community’s, diligence.  You let us know your experiences and well if we hear about it everyone else does too.

Why so Many Regions?

Golf is an experience and every experience is unique.  Different golf courses offer different experiences.  What we look for in golf course reviews offers a little insight into every golf course we play.  Not just one point of view but many, and by providing many different points of view you get a clearer picture of what each golf course has to offer.  To that end we felt it necessary to provide regions with their own highlighted golf course.  Local players can enjoy the fact there is a great facility they can play just around their corner.  Golfers looking to experience new golf courses can play these and experience first-hand these unique golf experiences.  Put simply, we allow not just your high-end. daily fee courses to shine but the local municipal as well.  They all deserve a fair shot and they all deserve to shine.

Attention Golf Course Operators

Not happy your golf course isn’t listed on our “Worth the Green Fee” List?  Do not fret.  Think of Greenskeeper.org as your way to improve the flow of golfers through your door.  Our core group of avid golfers are “Influencers.”  This means other golfers use their opinion to shape their decision where to play their next round of golf.  Take advantage of this.

Consider hosting a GK Plays Outing or GK Review Guru Visit which bring our golfers en mass to your golf course for an event, apply for our GK Coupon program (It’s free to try for the first 30 days), or GK Certificate Program or all of these things.  You’ll attract our core group.  They write responsible, informative and very relevant reviews.  And these reviews attract other golfers.  Mileage may vary but our programs are very popular and provide pretty stellar results.  And we have the numbers to prove it.
