Finally got out to play this highly regarded and suggested course. WOW! Easily in my personal top 3 public course I have ever played. from a course condition, it probably is in the top 2.
We have seen the Golfweek note saying Rams Hill is the 3rd best public course in California behind only Pebble and Spyglass, well we have played both of those within the last year, and course condition-wise, it is FAR superior to Pebble.  Put things into perspective, there are so many reviews already, I can only say as a first timer I was blown away.
Tee to green there is simply nothing out of place. This course is a MUST play.  Suck it up and make the drive.  For me from Lake Forest it took us 2 hours and 35 mins. to get there and it is a really nice drive to just chill out and enjoy. I would rate this in the 9.8 to 9.9 area….only reason not to give a 10 was “lack of GPS” and “no mayo on the club sandwich.”
Hey Golf Digest – this course absolutely deserves to be in the Top 100 US public courses list for 2017 and TOP course list in California.

Okay call me crazy, I have heard all the great things said about Rams Hill so I thought I would decide for myself. I made the 3 hour drive with 2 others yesterday in pouring rain to play here.
The weather reported that the rain would be light and would stop at 9:45 am so I made a 10:20 tee time. We arrived at 9:45 and the rain stopped at 10:10.
This place is golf heaven in the desert! Conditions were near perfect other than the winds that picked up on the back nine. Greens were 10-11 speed, tee boxes immaculate, fairways perfect, sand was great, and the course is a real gem. We bought the $150 twosome special and they charged our 3rd only $80 which was great. The round came with $15 credit vouchers for food so we stayed for lunch before driving home. It was a long day but was a real joy for us all.
Thanks to all the GK’ers for the spot on reviews.  We will be back soon!

Why Did We Expand the Regions?

It’s simple.  Greenskeeper.org has been growing.  We expanded the number of regions because golfers like you have reported about golf course conditions in more places you play.  In short golfers come to us if they want informative, relevant golf course reviews and it’s all due to your, our GK Community’s, diligence.  You let us know your experiences and well if we hear about it everyone else does too.

Why so Many Regions?

Golf is an experience and every experience is unique.  Different golf courses offer different experiences.  What we look for in golf course reviews offers a little insight into every golf course we play.  Not just one point of view but many, and by providing many different points of view you get a clearer picture of what each golf course has to offer.  To that end we felt it necessary to provide regions with their own highlighted golf course.  Local players can enjoy the fact there is a great facility they can play just around their corner.  Golfers looking to experience new golf courses can play these and experience first-hand these unique golf experiences. Put simply, we allow not just your high-end. daily fee courses to shine but the local municipal as well.  They all deserve a fair shot and they all deserve to shine.

Played the Blues (6671/72.8/133) in 3 hours, 20 minutes.  Pace of Play (POP) was great because it was around 100 and clear with little breeze. I like this course more with each visit. Do not score well here, but still one of my favorites.
This course is in excellent shape bordering on immaculate. The layout is certainty different visually from other courses with huge, wide fairways surrounded by crushed granite. Almost every hole has a forced carry over desert-scape, but the fairways are generous in size. The Bermuda tee boxes are large and very well maintained. Even the par 3’s rarely needed divot attention. The Bermuda fairways were lush & well maintained. Few unfixed divots. The only grass that qualifies as traditional rough here are the strips around the sand traps, because if you are around a green, it is mowed as fairway. Outside the fairway is the crushed granite and the desert-scape. There are a tremendous amount of sand traps on this course. I counted 14 on 1 hole alone. Very well maintained with high quality sand. The green side bunkers are deep and large and the fairway traps often have larger lips than most people are used to playing from. The Bermuda greens putted medium fast and were smooth. Firm and tough to hold a shot where it landed.
The customer service from all encountered was great. Drink cart came by probably a 1/2 dozen times. Nice grass range with complimentary balls, nice sand/chipping and practice putting areas that closely resembled the on course conditions. Nice restaurant onsite with outdoor patio dining. Definitely recommended.

1 of 3 courses played and this one turned out to be my favorite.  Although it was cart path only, it only took us a little over 4 hours to play as you could get close to your ball by driving through the desert area.
Course is just a beautiful green and the bunkers had nice fluffy sand. Greens were a little on the slow side but they all rolled the same.

Played on 9/10 with a foursome. Tee time was 7:30am, but we didn’t go off until 7:40. We thought we were in for a long round, but after the first two par 3s everything just opened up. Finished just under 5 hours, which isn’t bad considering 2 of the guys I played with aren’t very good golfers.
Fairways were in great shape, as were the greens and tee boxes. Rough had thick parts and then thin parts, but overall was good, especially around the greens. Was never in a bunker, but the sand dunes on the back nine had that fine beach sand. The front played away from the ocean and more in some houses, and the back played literally on hwy 1 and the beach. On a clear day I’m sure the views are awesome. Overall the course is very short and pretty straightforward, but fun nonetheless. Call ahead when you’re on 8 and order a breakfast burrito from the restaurant. You won’t be disappointed.
This was my first time playing golf on the peninsula, but I feel that PG will be on my list for my next visit.

I plays this course about a week ago from when I am writing this review.
This course is one of my favorite courses I have played! I won’t go into a hole by hole description like I typically do with most of my reviews, since I’ve only played this course once and the others numerous times.

The front 9 runs through the trees and neighborhood, and has a lot of elevation changes, and opens with two Par 3s, which is interesting, then two Par 4s and then two Par 5s and then two more Par 4s and then a long Par 3. The front 9 is tree lined, like I said earlier, and there is quite a few blind shots, knowing this course can help out a bit. But the front 9 was very fun. This course isn’t that long, so for longer hitters it can be really fun to hit a lot of wedges into greens. The greens were great! Ran true all day, not really any ball marks and they said they weren’t going to punch this Spring, which worried me but they were great!

The back 9 is the bread and butter of this course, and is where they get the name, Poor Man’s Pebble Beach. The firsr hole is a short Par 3, but then the rest of the back is nearly on the ocean. We picked the most picture perfect day you could play. Slight breeze and not a cloud in the sky. The hardest part of this side of the course was the dunes, and the blind shots you have to hit, again course knowledge is important but I noticed myself trying to see what was coming up next before I played a hole, since these holes run all next to one another.

For the price, this course was practically a steal!!! A round, a cart, and range balls, were 75 bucks. The Pro Shop attendant was super friendly! Was just a great all around day of golf! 75 bucks compared to 500+ I’ll take the lesser and play more! Even though Pebble is still in the works!

Walked the blues with my buddy Mack yesterday 12/17/16 on a cold high 50’s tee off start a little earlier than our scheduled 12:03pm tee time. We paid $36.00 which is their standard twilight time which starts at 12pm. The course was pretty empty considering the colder weather and a nice brisk maybe 10mph breeze at times. Our POP was only 3 hours 25 minutes walking waiting a little on the back nine.

The greens are in very good shape. Soft on high irons and shots with spin while running firm on all other shots. Putting semi-decently with fairly pure surfaces. Not to many ballmarks today but could see evidence of some softer footprints on some common pin placement areas. Overall would rate the greens a 8/10.

The fairways have pretty much gone dormant brown and even with the colder air produced some roll out and long drives. You still get a decent lie at present time on the fairways. These fairways always start to perk up and get better in the spring. Overall rating on the fairways 6/10.

Most tees were lush, fairly level and in good shape. Some tees could use some more sand mix on the par 3’s. Overall rating the tees 7/10.

Was in one greenside bunker on #18 that was firmer than normal due to the overnight rains the day(s) prior.

The greenside rough and the rough lining the fairways was lush in spots up to 2 inches and depending on where you were could be more thin or more lush than usual.

Great staff, great practice areas, great back nine and great prices–especially if you can snag a online time. This is my buddy Mack’s home course–we had a great time!

Played 11-29-16 early morning joined three other singles and played in about 3 1/2 hours with a little bit of waiting on the front side. Tee boxes were in good shape, mostly level, semi-lush and cut tight. Fairways are starting to turn a little dormant but still offer good lies but a little thin. Rough was in good shape 2-3 inches and lush. Was in one bunker that had a good layer of nice soft sand. Greens were in very nice shape, best I have seen them in a while. They were a little soft but rolling smooth and fast with very few divot marks. Always a fun course to play with great costumer service.

Teed off Wednesday about 10am and finished in 4:40 (tournament).
Recent rains made the greens soft and so footprints made the greens a little bumpy at times. Other than a little bumpiness the greens rolled decent with medium/fast speed and held shots. The fairways had decent grass coverage with a few wet spots due to rain. The rough is winter low height with a few thin/bare spots. The bunkers were decent considering recent rains. The tee boxes were fair to good with some mildly uneven.
This is a fun track to play with a nice amount of variety to the holes. Water comes into play on several holes. The course is flat and easily walkalbe. The staff has always been friendly.

First time I’ve played this course. I just never knew it was public.
Doh! Stupid me…it’s a wonderful track. Reminds me a bit of Skylinks and Rio but it’s better. The course is walkable which is nice. Greens are superb, true, well kept, just one or two more on the stimp meter and they would be top notch. Good open holes and a few tight ones, so you can go through every club in the bag if you’re playing it wisely. Quite a bit of water to navigate and the final run of holes are really excellent.
Great chili at $3 a pop at the turn, lovely guys in the pro shop. Not much to criticize really. I’m sold. Can’t wait to go back.

Played 1-14-17 first out as a single walking in a little under three hours.
Tee boxes were in good shape, mostly lush and level with a few being a little thin and unlevel mostly on three pars. Fairways were in nice shape very lush with a few small bare areas. Rough was not as long as normal but still thick and tough to hit from. Didn’t go into any bunkers but most of them looked to be okay with some still holding some water from the rains.
Greens were in great shape, the best that I have seen them in a while rolling smooth with medium/fast speed. The course held up very well from all the rain. Definitely worth going out and playing.

Rode the Black tees today 10/3/2016 playing 36 holes with RGM2525 finishing both rounds in about 6 hours. Used the all you can play GK coupon which includes cart and range balls for $47.00–a spectacular deal for one of the toughest courses and beautiful layouts in California.
Morning round was in the low 60’s with a light breeze– we were greeted with a 20-25 mph swirling wind during our afternoon round. The staff here are very friendly. They have a cool elevated range, big chipping green and nice huge putting green that mirror’s the speed of the greens on the course. The greens were super pure putting wise and in very good shape. Little to no ballmarks, holding irons very nicely. I have seen them faster but overall I am rating the greens an 8/10.
The fairways were mostly lush, green with a couple dried out brownish spots here and there that do not effect play. If you are in the fairway you have a nice lie. The tees were mostly lush and mostly level–only a couple of boxes were crowned. Seemed like they have redone the black tee box on #3.
Overall rating for the tees were a 7.5/10. Was in 3 green-side bunkers over 36 holes and I loved the bunkers–very rarely am I 3/3 out of sand saves. Sand is thicker, raked and in good shape. Rated 8/10 Rough was thick 2-3 inches and lush in most places lining the fairways and greens. I will say beware of being under trees in the rough or just in the rough at all. There are places were your ball might sink down in a hole in the rough–tough to hit a 295 yd drive down the middle of the fairway–hit a slope in the fairway–roll in the rough and then ride up to find your ball in a hole barely being able to advance it–lol–that’s what makes this course very tough. Rough rating 8/10.
Today we maybe saw 2-4 total groups on the golf course–it was like playing our own private golf course. I would HIGHLY recommend this golf course.

Stopped by Thursday to have my clubs re-gripped.
At the time the course allowed walking only but decided to go out Friday.   The course drained well.  I could not even hear water as you drove on the rough or along the fairway.  There were areas roped off for water but personally, I never had to take a casual water drop. Greens were smooth.  They were as you would expect speed-wise, fast downhill and slow uphill.
Weather was a nice bonus and the sky was clear. It was just a nice day for golf.

Played today with Itslikeimsayin- thank you Mark, for sharing that great deal. Wow, it was windy today! It was quite a challenge locating the balls among all the leaves and debris in the fairways. Mark summed up the conditions well, so I’ll just add a couple of comments. I was happy to see that all the vegetation has been cleared out of the ditch on #6. Just being dirt and some mud, it was much easier to get out of. #5 still has a temporary green and there was a crew doing quite a bit of work on #9. I was in the rough many times, but the ball sat up well and some of my best shots were from that nice cushion. This is a fun course and pretty long from the forward tees with a par 73. Despite the wind, I did well and look forward to playing there again.

Played 12-7-16 early morning walking in about 3 hours joining a threesome in carts. Tee boxes are in descent shape, a little thin, some un-level, and shorter par fours and three pars with some divot damage. Fairways were in okay shape, semi-lush with some thin areas and some bare spots. Rough is mostly cut pretty low with some thicker areas and some bare spots. Didn’t go in any bunkers but they looked okay. Greens were in nice shape, medium/fast, rolling pretty true with an occasional bump, and holding shots real nice. Good course for a quick morning round.

My first time playing here yesterday. We had a 7:30 tee time at Rustic Canyon but the winds were so strong that the course was unplayable so we headed to De Bell. When we arrived there was no winds at all…..we got right out and enjoyed our round however this is not my style of course. Many holes are gimmicky and you would have to hit irons off of many tees. We enjoyed ourselves but no-one really felt the course had a wow factor that would bring us back. The tee boxes were mostly level, the greens were nice and had many breaks so were difficult but fun, the sand was okay, and the fairways were very spotty with GUR marked in many locations. You definitely have to hit every type of golf shot here to score well. Chipping, bump and run, lob shots, and tee shot placement are all needed. Great place to practice with a 4 hour pace for our foursome.
